Orioles Offseason Gameplan

By Steve Adams | December 6, 2009 at 1:40pm CDT

The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec looks at five key questions for the Orioles as they head into this year's Winter Meetings. He's also got some quotes from Andy MacPhail talking about the Orioles' views on this year's free agent market. Let's go over some highlights:

  • MacPhail states that the O's will be less active at the Winter Meetings than they were in 2008, when they signed Cesar Izturis, traded Ramon Hernandez, and offered a $140MM contract to Mark Teixeira. He does, however, state that when the offseason is said and done, Baltimore will likely have been more active than it was overall last year.
  • Don't expect a major move from Baltimore this week. They don't have a free agent target singled out and will likely wait to see how the market takes shape as time progresses.
  • While they'd like to add an impact hitter, the Orioles are unlikely to pursue names like Matt Holliday or Jason Bay, and MacPhail isn't big on the idea of trading his top prospects for short-term fixes. So far, the O's aren't thought to be bidders for veteran outfield/DH types like Jermaine Dye, Hideki Matsui, and Vladimir Guerrero.
  • Luke Scott is likely Baltimore's biggest trade chip. Moving Scott would allow Nolan Reimold to DH while recovering from surgery, and improve defense by getting Felix Pie more at-bats in left field.
  • Ty Wigginton is also mentioned as a trade chip. Zrebiec says the Orioles would have to be overwhelmed by an offer to move Jeremy Guthrie, and have a way to secure two veteran arms to replace him as well.
  • MacPhail would prefer not to sign a closer that will cost their second-round pick, such as Jose Valverde, Mike Gonzalez, or Rafael Soriano. Zrebiec mentions Kevin Gregg as a possibility.
  • The Orioles have had talks with John Lackey's agent, but aren't expected to be serious bidders for the former Halos ace. They'll look at names like Ben Sheets, Rich Harden, and Erik Bedard instead.
  • After Radhames Liz was claimed by the Padres, Baltimore found themselves with an open spot on its 40-man roster. MacPhail would prefer to give a homegrown player a shot rather than make a Rule 5 selection, unless he's convinced that the Rule 5 Draft offers something that their minor league clubs currently don't have.

Giants Notes: Rodriguez, Uggla, Bumgarner

By Zachary Links | December 5, 2009 at 11:30pm CDT

Let's take a look at some Giants tidbits courtesy of Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News…

  • We heard earlier today that the Giants are one of a handful of teams interested in Ivan Rodriguez.  It has also been reported that the club is interested in Yorvit Torrealba and Brad Ausmus as they look to ease Buster Posey into the role of catcher.  However, Baggarly says Miguel Olivo, Rod Barajas, and Jason Kendall are more likely targets.
  • Although Florida's Dan Uggla is highly coveted by GM Brian Sabean, he is unwilling to sacrifice valuable commodities such as left-hander Madison Bumgarner to get him.
  • Just as the club wants to wait before giving Posey the reins as starting catcher, they would like to have Bumgarner start the year in Triple-A.  In order to do this, they need to find a fifth starter.  If they cannot retain Brad Penny, they'll have to look out-of-house.

Odds & Ends: Hudson, Wolf, Betancourt, Braves

By Tim Dierkes | December 2, 2009 at 1:55pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • The Reds signed pitcher Jon Adkins to a minor league deal, according to the pitcher's Twitter (hat tip to The Hall Of Very Good).  Adkins spent 2009 pitching in Korea.
  • The Giants were right not to offer arbitration to Bengie Molina, writes Grant Brisbee of McCovey Chronicles.
  • Chris Pummer as well as our own Howard Megdal from The Perpetual Post weigh in on Andruw Jones, who recently signed with the White Sox for $500K.
  • Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News discusses the chances of the Giants signing Miguel Tejada, Johnny Damon, Jermaine Dye, or Hudson.
  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times says the Mariners are interested in Orlando Hudson, at the right price.  The lack of an arbitration offer helps.
  • Dave Cameron of FanGraphs looks at Ned Colletti's claim that the Dodgers' decision not to offer arbitration to Type A free agent Randy Wolf "was made strictly from a baseball perspective."
  • No surprise here: Astros GM Ed Wade indicated that a reunion with Wolf is unlikely (MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reporting).  Wade also downplayed the reports linking the Astros to Brett Myers and J.J. Putz, saying, "We've made contact with agents for about every player out there as a matter of course.  I would not read anymore into it than that."
  • ESPN's Buster Olney believes Rafael Betancourt "could be the player whose market is most affected" among the ten Type As offered arbitration.
  • Ken Davidoff of Newsday questions the Mets' Billy Wagner trade from August.
  • David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wonders if the Braves might now pursue a setup man such as Octavio Dotel or Fernando Rodney.
  • Corey Brock and Steve Gilbert have Winter Meetings previews at MLB.com for the Padres and Diamondbacks, respectively.
  • Diamond Leung links to stories indicating the Chiba Lotte Marines "are interested in purchasing the contract of Dodgers left-hander Eric Stults."  Stults posted a 4.86 ERA in ten starts for the Dodgers last year, making another 13 starts in the minors.

Several Clubs Interested In Jermaine Dye

By Tim Dierkes | December 2, 2009 at 1:52pm CDT

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times has the latest on free agent outfielder Jermaine Dye.  Cowley notes that while the Rangers are interested, Dye may prefer not to be a DH.  He names the Red Sox, Cardinals, and Giants as other teams that have shown interest.  Dye would presumably be a backup plan for the Red Sox and Cardinals.

What about the Yankees, who ESPN's Jerry Crasnick said yesterday discussed Dye internally?  Cowley says the Yanks denied the report, yet his source said the team asked for Dye's medical reports.

As for the Giants, MLB.com's Chris Haft notes that Xavier Nady is another outfielder on their radar.

Odds & Ends: Kuo, DeRosa, Dye, Blue Jays

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2009 at 4:32pm CDT

With all the arbitration decisions flying around today, we haven't had time for an Odds & Ends until now.

  • Diamond Leung tweeted last night that the Yankees "signed Taiwanese 18-year-old infielder Fu-Lin Kuo to six-figure bonus."  Taiwan Baseball says Kuo received about $150K.
  • Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has the Cardinals, Phillies, Mets, and Giants as suitors for Mark DeRosa.  ESPN's Buster Olney heard that a few teams are concerned with DeRosa's range at third base.
  • Fungoes shows us "when the hot stove is the hottest," graphically.  Looks about right to me…peaks in December, stays hot in January.
  • A.J. Burnett talked to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News about Roy Halladay potentially being traded.
  • Juan Castro will take his physical Thursday according to Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer; if he passes, his one-year deal with the Phillies will be official.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick wrote about potential fits for Jermaine Dye, noting that the Yankees have discussed him internally.  Crasnick says geography will not be a major factor for Dye.
  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian tweeted comments from Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos regarding their search for a catcher.  Anthopoulos is eyeing some potential non-tenders.  Dioner Navarro and John Buck come to mind, with Kelly Shoppach going to the Rays.
  • The market for Miguel Tejada should be decent now that he certainly will not cost a draft pick.  SI's Jon Heyman tweets that the Cardinals, Phillies, Giants, Rangers, and Astros are interested.  Rangers?
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports that the Brewers officially announced their minor league deal with John Halama today.
  • Nick Green's agent Tom O'Connell tells Ken Davidoff of Newsday his client is drawing "significant interest" on Major League contracts.

White Sox Do Not Offer Arb To Dye, Dotel

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2009 at 12:19pm CDT

The White Sox will not offer arbitration to Jermaine Dye (A), Octavio Dotel (A), Scott Podsednik (neither), or Ramon Castro (neither), tweets White Sox VP Scott Reifert.  None of these decisions come as a surprise.  Note that teams interested in Dye and Dotel can now be certain that the players will not cost draft picks.

Rangers Rumors: Oliver, Dye, Dotel

By Howard Megdal | November 30, 2009 at 8:19pm CDT

This info-packed T.R. Sullivan report for MLB.com indicates that Texas is interested in Darren Oliver, Jermaine Dye and Octavio Dotel. Sullivan points out that all three are Type A free agents.  Of course, there would only be a draft pick cost attached if the player is offered and turns down arbitration (which seems possible only for Oliver).

Sullivan added that Texas is expected to offer arbitration to Marlon Byrd, while no decision has been made about Ivan Rodriguez.  Both are Type Bs.

Oliver worked out of relief for the Angels last season, but had two tours of duty with the Rangers, most recently as a starter in 2001. Their interest in Oliver is understandable- his 8 strikeouts per nine innings was his highest total since back in 1994.  Dotel has posted back-to-back healthy seasons for the White Sox, and could solidify a shaky Texas bullpen.

Dye, meanwhile, was also mentioned as a potential Texas target by Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com.

Orioles Interested In Millwood

By Howard Megdal | November 30, 2009 at 6:37pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com are reporting that the Orioles have called the Rangers about Kevin Millwood, though talks are not serious, according to one source.

The source said the Rangers would like to move Millwood's $12MM salary for 2010 in order to sign Jermaine Dye.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, however, reports that the Rangers are not interested in moving Millwood.

Millwood pitched to a 3.67 ERA in 198 2/3 innings in 2009, but his strikeout rate dropped from 6.7 per nine innings in 2008 to 5.6 in 2009.

Dye, meanwhile, hit .250/.340/.453 in 2009. He's indicated a willingness to move to first base, but that kind of offensive production wouldn't be enough for the position.

Rangers Rumors: Marlins Talks, Dye, Millwood

By Tim Dierkes | November 30, 2009 at 9:30am CDT

The latest Rangers hot stove buzz, courtesy of MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan…

  • The Rangers were told by the Marlins that Josh Johnson is not available, which jives with Michael Hill's recent comments.  Texas also inquired on other Marlins pitchers, and Sullivan says "there doesn't appear to be a match."
  • Sullivan says the teams had "absolutely no discussions" about Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla.  On November 19th, ESPN's Jayson Stark had written that talks with the Giants and Rangers for Uggla had gotten hot and heavy at the GM Meetings.
  • The Rangers will need to add a utility infielder, with Omar Vizquel signing with the White Sox.
  • Jermaine Dye remains a top Rangers target as they search for a right-handed middle of the order bat.  Dye's willingness to play first base appeals to the Rangers.  Despite the nice fit, Sullivan believes Dye will land in San Francisco.
  • The Rangers "are not trying to move" veteran starter Kevin Millwood.  Millwood under contract for 2010 after recording "The $12 Million Out" on September 21st.

Odds & Ends: Johnson, Cabrera, Mets, Contreras

By Mike Axisa | November 27, 2009 at 2:22pm CDT

Here's some discount links on Black Friday…

  • ESPN's Keith Law notes that the Marlins have a history of moving players early, and says that they could land two big league ready players and two Double-A prospects for Josh Johnson.
  • There's no evidence to suggest that the Red Sox have approached the Tigers about a trade for Miguel Cabrera according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com.
  • Bob Klapisch of FoxSports.com writes that it'll take more than one offseason to get the Mets back on track.
  • Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe says that next week's arbitration deadline will have a big impact on the Red Sox, and wonders if GM Theo Epstein has a trade for a shortstop in mind.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert says a marriage between the Diamondbacks and free agent Nick Johnson seems unlikely because the team has a little more than $10MM to spend and more pressing needs in the rotation.
  • Jose Contreras met with officials from the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, according to the AP (via NBCSports.com).
  • SI.com's Jon Heyman hears that Jermaine Dye would like to go west, and suggests that he could be an alternative righty bat for the Rangers.
  • Heyman also hears that the Blue Jays like Jesus Montero of the Yankees and Casey Kelly of the Red Sox, referring of course to a potential Roy Halladay trade.
  • FoxSports.com's Dayn Perry takes a look at some free agents teams should avoid.
  • R.J. Anderson at FanGraphs chimes on three recent moves: Dallas McPherson to the A's, Tug Hulett to the Red Sox, and Radhames Liz to the Padres.
