Giants, Drew Ellis Agree To Minor League Contract

The Giants are signing corner infielder Drew Ellis to a minor league deal. The move was announced by the Atlantic League’s Lexington Legends, where he had opened the season.

Ellis, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Diamondbacks. The Louisville product spent parts of two seasons with Arizona, batting .134 with 33 strikeouts in 97 plate appearances. He made a one-game cameo with the Mariners in 2022 and appeared in 12 contests for the Phillies the following year. That remains his most recent big league experience. Ellis spent some time in Triple-A with the Angels last season, posting a .243/.373/.414 line with almost as many walks as strikeouts in 134 plate appearances.

The right-handed hitter only spent two weeks with Lexington. He mashed over his 13 games, connecting on five home runs while batting .373 with nine walks and 11 strikeouts in 60 plate appearances. It was enough to get Ellis back into affiliated ball. He’s a career .247/.365/.490 hitter over parts of four Triple-A seasons.

Angels Sign Drew Ellis To Minor League Deal

The Angels are adding infielder Drew Ellis on a minor league contract, per an announcement from his now-former team in the independent Atlantic League: the Charleston Dirty Birds. Ellis’ contract was purchased from the Dirty Birds by the Angels yesterday, per the announcement. Presumably, he’ll head to the Halos’ Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake City.

Ellis, 28, has appeared in each of the past three major league seasons, spending time with the D-backs, Mariners and Phillies. He’s only tallied 129 overall plate appearances, during which he’s popped three homers and walked at a 13.2% clip while struggling to an overall .157/.295/.269 batting line. Ellis has fanned in 31.8% of those 129 trips to the plate. He’s played first base, second base and third base in the majors, plus a pair of minor league games at shortstop and 37 games in left field back in his days at the University of Louisville.

Originally drafted by the Diamondbacks back in 2017, Ellis was that year’s No. 44 overall pick. Baseball America ranked him 66th in that year’s draft class and pegged him as high as ninth in Arizona’s system at one point, touting his plus power, athleticism and solid skills at the hot corner.

In parts of three Triple-A seasons, Ellis has shown off that power and a good approach at the plate but still hit for a low average. He’s a career .247/.364/.500 hitter at the minors’ top level. Given his big league contact issues and that low average, it’s easy to suspect he’s been excessively strikeout prone in the minors. But while Ellis has fanned at a slightly higher-than-average 24.3% rate in Triple-A, the greater culprit has been his penchant for weak infield flies. He’s totaled 1124 Triple-A plate appearances and popped up to the infield a staggering 86 times. That propensity has undercut his plate discipline and impressive power.

The Angels are in clear need of some infield depth, making their pickup of Ellis plenty understandable. The Halos just acquired veteran Luis Guillorme from the Braves and moved Anthony Rendon to the 60-day injured list. Rendon will be out until at least late June. Brandon Drury exited his most recent game due to a hamstring issue and seems likely to head to the injured list. Infielders Miguel Sano and Michael Stefanic are also on the IL. The Angels are currently rostering both Ehire Adrianza and Cole Tucker, but neither has provided any offense in an eight-game sample. Niko Goodrum was claimed off waivers from the Rays today. Ellis will give them some depth with a bit of versatility and a nice track record of power and on-base skills in Triple-A, should the Halos eventually want to shuffle their bench mix or in the event that they incur further injuries.

21 Players Elect Free Agency

With the offseason quickly approaching, a number of players elect minor league free agency on a regular basis. Separate from MLB free agents, who reach free agency five days after the World Series by accumulating six years of service time in the big leagues, eligible minor league players can begin electing free agency as soon as the regular season comes to a close. Each of these players were outrighted off of their organization’s 40-man roster at some point during the season and either have been outrighted previously in their career or have the service time necessary to reach free agency since they were not added back to their former club’s rosters. For these players, reaching free agency is the expected outcome, and there will surely be more in the coming weeks. Here at MLBTR, we’ll provide occasional updates as players continue to elect minor league free agency.

Phillies Outright Drew Ellis

Sept. 24: Ellis has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A, as per the Phillies’ official transactions page.  There isn’t yet any word on whether or not he has accepted the assignment or elected free agency.

Sept. 22: The Phillies announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Orion Kerkering, a move that was reported on earlier today. In corresponding moves, right-hander Yunior Marté was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley while infielder Drew Ellis was designated for assignment.

Ellis, 27, signed a minor league deal with the Phils in April and was added to the 40-man roster in June. He has since served as an optionable depth piece, playing 12 games in the majors. He drew walks in six of his 29 plate appearances, leading to a strong .217/.379/.478 batting line in that small sample. In 70 Triple-A games this year, he’s slashed .224/.336/.433 for a wRC+ of 92.

The Phils will now place Ellis on waivers in the coming days. He’s hit just .157/295/.269 in his major league career, in just 129 plate appearances. He’s had much stronger results in Triple-A, having hit .247/.364/.500 in 1,124 plate appearances at that level. He’s played each of the non-shortstop infield positions, meaning he could appeal to a club in search of some extra depth on the dirt. He wouldn’t be postseason eligible if claimed now but can be retained for six years beyond the current season. He’s in his final option year and will be out of options next season. In the event he clears waivers, he would have the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, by virtue of having a previous career outright.

Phillies Promote Johan Rojas

10:30am: The Phils have now announced the moves, listing Pache’s injury as right elbow irritation. His IL placement is retroactive to July 11.

9:20am: The Phillies are going to promote outfielder Johan Rojas to the major leagues, as first reported by Mike Rodriguez. The move is also relayed by Matt Gelb of The Athletic, who adds that outfielder Cristian Pache seems to be heading to the injured list. He also adds that Drew Ellis will take the roster spot of Josh Harrison, who was placed on the injured list during the All-Star break due to a right wrist contusion. Rojas is already on the 40-man roster but will be making his major league debut as soon as he gets into a game.

Rojas, 22, was part of the Phillies’ 2017-2018 international signing class and ascended to the radar of prospect evaluators in the years that followed. Baseball America ranked him the club’s #11 prospect in 2020 and he’s been in the top 10 in each season since. His speed and defense are considered his standout traits, and he has showcased those wheels by stealing 159 bases in 430 minor league games thus far in his career. Defensively, he’s mostly played center field but has also slotted into a corner on occasion.

His offense, however, has generally been considered a bit behind those traits.  In 2021, he hit .262/.329/.417 in the lower levels of the farm system for a wRC+ of 102. Last year, he split his time between High-A and Double-A, slashing just .244/.309/.354 for a wRC+ of 83. Despite those tepid results at the plate, the Phils liked the overall package enough that they didn’t want to risk losing him in the Rule 5 draft and thus added him to their roster in November.

The Phils returned him to Double-A this year and the results have been far more encouraging, as he’s hit .306/.361/.484 for a wRC+ of 129, stealing 30 bases in the process. That strong showing will get him a shot in the big leagues, jumping right over the Triple-A level.

The club could have recalled more experienced players on their roster such as Jake Cave or Simón Muzziotti, both of whom are on the 40-man roster, currently in Triple-A and have already been to the big leagues. But it’s possible that this promotion is for a part-time role that suits the skill set of Rojas. The club generally has an outfield of Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos on most days. Perhaps Rojas will take over Pache’s role, taking the occasional start in center while also serving as a defensive replacement or pinch runner.

The exact nature of Pache’s injury isn’t known, as Gelb only reports that it is minor. His upcoming placement on the IL can be backdated due to the recent All-Star break, so it’s possible that Rojas gets a brief taste of the major leagues before heading back down to the farm.

Phillies Place Alec Bohm On Injured List, Select Drew Ellis

1:45pm: The Phillies plan to play Clemens at first base against right-handed pitching and platoon him with Ellis for the time being, manager Rob Thomson said following the team’s formal announcement of the moves (link via Lauber). Bryce Harper hasn’t yet been cleared to throw to bases, so while he’s continuing workouts to acclimate to first base, he’s not an option yet. Sosa will get the majority of the reps at the hot corner while Bohm is shelved.

As for Bohm’s recovery, Thomson declined to offer a specific timetable, stating only that the Phillies “want to make sure it’s knocked out and it doesn’t come back, so however long that takes.” The Phillies designated outfielder Cal Stevenson for assignment to open roster space for Ellis.

9:21am: The Phillies will select the contract of infielder Drew Ellis from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and place fellow infielder Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list, reports Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer (Twitter link). Yesterday, Bohm underwent an MRI on an ailing hamstring that has kept him out of the past few games. The Phillies have a full 40-man roster, so they’ll need to make a corresponding move in order to get Ellis to the big league level.

Following Rhys Hoskins’ season-ending ACL tear in spring training and Darick Hall’s thumb surgery in early April, Bohm has taken the lion’s share of playing time at first base for the injury-plagued Phillies (though he’s still logged plenty of action at the hot corner as well). Bohm has turned in a solid, if unspectacular .265/.321/.403 while grading out as a below-average defender at both infield corners. It’s not yet clear how much time he’ll be expected to miss, but in his stead, the Phils will likely turn to utilityman Kody Clemens at first base. The newly selected Ellis and utilitymen Edmundo Sosa and Josh Harrison figure to see time at third base.

Clemens, 27, came over from the Tigers in the Gregory Soto trade this offseason and has batted .268/.333/.479 with four homers in 78 plate appearances. He’s done so while striking out at a hefty 28.2% rate, so it could be tough for him to maintain that average, but he’s elevating the ball consistently (46.9% fly-ball rate, 24.5% line-drive rate) and making plenty of hard contact (90.1 mph average exit velocity), lending some credence to the power output.

It’s worth noting that Hall, who like Clemens bats left-handed, embarked on a minor league rehab assignment two days ago. He’s out to a 3-for-9 start with the Phillies’ High-A affiliate, and while the team likely wants him to get more than nine plate appearances after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb, Hall could be a big league option in the very near future. The 27-year-old slugger showed an all-or-nothing skill set in 2022 when he made his big league debut and hit .250/.282/.522 with nine dingers in just 142 plate appearances.

Ellis, 27, has seen big league time with the D-backs and Mariners across the past two seasons but signed a minor league deal with the Phillies over the winter. He’s batted just .141/.270/.212 in a tiny sample of 100 MLB plate appearances, walking at a hearty 11% clip against a more concerning 34% strikeout rate. He’s posted huge numbers while splitting time evenly between the Phillies’ Double-A and Triple-A clubs in 2023, with a .269/.380/.628 slash and eight long balls in just 78 plate appearances.

Defensively, Ellis has primarily been a third baseman, though he’s gathered experience at other spots as well. In recent years, he’s seen playing time at first base (344 innings), second base (275 innings) and even a few brief appearances at shortstop (19 innings). Like Sosa and Harrison, he’s a right-handed hitter, so there’s no neat platoon possibility at the hot corner. However, he could serve as a righty complement to Clemens and/or Hall at first base while Bohm mends, and if he can carry over any of that power display to the Majors, he could earn some additional at-bats across the diamond.

Phillies Designate Cal Stevenson For Assignment

The Phillies announced Thursday that they’ve designated outfielder Cal Stevenson for assignment. He’d only just been claimed off waivers last week, but with Alec Bohm heading to the injured list — as was reported this morning — the team needed to open a roster spot to select the contract of infielder Drew Ellis from Triple-A.

The 26-year-old Stevenson was a tenth-round pick by the Blue Jays in 2018 and has already thrice been traded in his professional career: from Toronto to Houston in the Derek Fisher deal, from Houston to Tampa Bay for Austin Pruitt, and from Tampa Bay to Oakland for Christian Bethancourt. He’s now on his third DFA of the 2023 season alone, having gone from Oakland to San Francisco to the Phillies via that process. Stevenson has had minimal big league experience, both this season (0-for-12 in San Francisco) and in his young career (.145/.259/.188 in 83 plate appearances).

Down in the minors, he’s been a much more productive hitter. Stevenson touts a .267/.378/.380 batting line with seven home runs and 21 steals in 26 attempts. He’s walked at a hefty 15% clip in Triple-A against a lower-than-average 19.5% strikeout rate. Stevenson can play all three outfield spots, though the bulk of his work has come in center field. The Phils likely claimed him in hopes of rostering a true fourth outfield option while the injured Cristian Pache mends, but health concerns elsewhere on the roster prompted them to quickly change course.

The Phillies will have a week to trade Stevenson or attempt to pass him through outright waivers. Given his defensive abilities, on-base track record and remaining minor league options, there’s a decent chance that another team in need of some outfield depth will take a look at Stevenson, either via a small trade or a waiver claim. If the Phils can succeed in passing him through waivers, however, they’d be able to retain him in Triple-A as a depth option. Stevenson doesn’t have the service time or prior outright needed to reject an outright assignment.

Phillies Sign Drew Ellis To Minor League Deal

The Phillies have added free agent third baseman Drew Ellis on a minor league deal, according to Baseball America’s transactions tracker.

The 27-year-old 100 plate appearances over a couple of seasons with the Diamondbacks and Mariners, putting together a .141/.270/.212 line with a solitary home run since his debut in 2021. A second round draft pick by the Diamondbacks in 2017, Ellis put up solid numbers coming up through the minor but broke out in a big way in 2021. That year at Triple-A, Ellis slashed .294/.399/.615 with 20 home runs over 358 plate appearances.

Unfortunately, that form hasn’t translated to the big leagues in his opportunities there, and Ellis posted far more subdued numbers in Triple-A last year, slashing .226/.355/.455 with 19 home runs. He was in camp with the Mariners this year, but was released back in March.

The bulk of his time has been spent at third base, but he has logged time at second in the big leagues (as well as first and short in the minors). At third, Ellis totaled -5 Defensive Runs Saved and -6 Outs Above Average across 182 1/3 defensive innings.

Mariners Release Drew Ellis

The Mariners announced Friday evening that corner infielder Drew Ellis has been released. He’d been in camp as a non-roster invitee after being outrighted off Seattle’s roster last November.

Seattle claimed Ellis off waivers from the Diamondbacks last June. The Louisville product only played one MLB game with the M’s, going 1-3 with a strikeout. He spent 70 games at Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .231/.346/.488 with 15 home runs and a 14.2% walk rate. Ellis had posted similar numbers with Arizona’s top affiliate while playing in six big league contests for the Snakes. Despite the roughly average Triple-A production, his .141/.270/.212 line over 100 big league plate appearances led to him going unclaimed on waivers at the start of the offseason.

The M’s gave Ellis a look this spring as he looked to reestablish himself on the MLB radar. He went hitless in 17 at-bats, striking out in half of his 20 plate appearances. With Dylan Moore set to miss the start of the season due to an oblique strain, Seattle’s right-handed hitting infield depth is thinned out a couple weeks from the start of the season. Ellis’ rough exhibition showing wasn’t going to put him in position for a call-up, though, and Seattle now cuts him loose entirely.

Both Corey Brock of the Athletic and Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times (Twitter link) suggested this evening that Moore’s injury could afford a season-opening job for non-roster invitee Mason McCoy. Like Moore and Ellis, McCoy is a right-handed hitting infielder. He’s capable of playing up the middle and coming off a .256/.332/.473 showing with 21 homers and 22 stolen bases over 503 plate appearances for Tacoma.

Ellis heads back out to free agency. Because he wasn’t on the 40-man roster, he won’t first have to clear waivers before hitting the open market. As a former second-round draftee with a .256/.374/.524 line in 826 career Triple-A plate appearances, he could find some interest on a minor league deal elsewhere.

Outright Assignments: Wallach, Ellis

2:10 pm: The Angels announced that Wallach has elected free agency.

1:05 pm: The latest outright assignments from around baseball…

  • The Angels outrighted catcher Chad Wallach to Triple-A, as per the club’s MLB.com transactions page.  It isn’t known if he’ll accept the assignment or not, but since this isn’t the first time Wallach has been outrighted, he can opt to reject the Angels’ assignment in favor of free agency.  Wallach was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers in August 2021, and he played in 12 games with Anaheim this season when Max Stassi and Kurt Suzuki were on the injured list.  Best known for his time with the Marlins, Wallach has appeared in parts of the last six MLB seasons, and has a reputation as a solid defensive catcher and game-caller.  At the plate, Wallach has hit .198/.265/.296 over 271 PA and 90 games in the majors.
  • The Mariners announced that Drew Ellis was outrighted off their 40-man roster, and the infielder was assigned to Triple-A after clearing waivers.  This is first time Ellis has been outrighted, and since he also lacks the prerequisite MLB service time or seven seasons in the minors, he cannot elect free agency.  The 26-year-old came to Seattle via waiver claim off the Diamondbacks roster in June, though he only appeared in a single MLB game in a Mariners uniform.  Making his Major League debut with the D’Backs in 2021, Ellis has played in 35 games in the Show, with a .482 OPS over an even 100 plate appearances.  Arizona selected Ellis in the second round of the 2017 draft, and his minor league numbers improved after a promotion to Triple-A in 2021, but his production declined again this past season.  Ellis brings some infield depth with his experience at first, second, and third base during his minor league career.
