Minor Moves: Lannan, Cisnero, Savery, Laffey, Britton, Triunfel

By charliewilmoth and Brad Johnson | November 22, 2014 at 6:20pm CDT

Here are today’s minor moves from around the league.

  • The Reds have signed right-handed reliever Jose Cisnero, tweets Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. Cisnero is entering his age 26 season and has a 4.66 ERA, 8.57 K/9, and 4.84 BB/9 in 48 and one-third career innings – all with the Astros. Cisnero was outrighted by Houston earlier in the month and has inked a minor league deal with Cincinnati.
  • In the same tweet, Cotillo also reports four other minor league signings. The Mariners re-signed Burt Reynolds, the White Sox inked left-handed reliever Joe Savery, and the Rockies signed right-hander Brett Marshall and left-hander Aaron Laffey. Of the four, Laffey comes with the most major league experience – 487 innings of 4.45 ERA ball. The soft-tossing lefty’s last extended stint in the majors was in 2012. Marshall had a 12 inning cup of tea with the Yankees in 2013 but struggled to a 6.53 ERA with the Reds Triple-A affiliate this season. Savery, a former first round pick, has seen spot work in parts of four seasons. The Phillies tried to use him as a lefty specialist, but he’s actually posted reverse platoon splits.
  • The Rockies have also signed pitchers Justin Miller, Jose Ortega, and John Lannan, tweets Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Right-handers Miller and Ortega saw minimal work for the Tigers, where they have posted uninspiring numbers. Lannan is a major league veteran of eight seasons, although he hasn’t seen a full season of action since 2011. He has a 4.18 ERA, 4.70 K/9, and 3.39 BB/9 in 862 career innings.
  • The Dodgers have signed infielder Buck Britton to a minor league deal, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun tweets. Britton, the brother of Orioles reliever Zach, had spent the previous seven years in Baltimore’s system. Last season, the 28-year-old hit .289/.345/.453 in 505 plate appearances split between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk, primarily playing second base and third base.
  • The Giants have signed infielder Carlos Triunfel and lefty Braulio Lara to minor-league deals, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy tweets. Triunfel hit just .223/.256/.330 for hitter-friendly Triple-A Albuquerque in 2014, mostly playing the two middle infield positions. The Dodgers outrighted him in September. The 25-year-old Lara posted a 5.77 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9 in 57 2/3 innings of relief in a 2014 season spent in the upper minors of the Rays’ system.

Tigers Designate Justin Miller For Assignment

By charliewilmoth | August 30, 2014 at 9:45am CDT

The Tigers have designated pitcher Justin Miller for assignment, Chris Iott of MLive.com tweets. The move clears space for lefty Kyle Ryan, who will make his MLB debut tonight as the starter for the second game of a doubleheader against the White Sox.

Miller has pitched 12 1/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Tigers this season, posting a 5.11 ERA while striking out five batters and walking two. The 27-year-old righty has had a good season for Triple-A Toledo, posting a 1.81 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 44 2/3 innings. Miller missed the 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery, then was released by the Rangers near the end of last season. He signed a minor league deal with the Tigers last September.

Minor Moves: Justin Miller, Blaine Hardy

By Jeff Todd | September 21, 2013 at 12:50pm CDT

Let's catch up on some recent minor moves, courtesy of Baseball America's Matt Eddy:

  • The Tigers inked righty Justin Miller to a minor-league deal. Miller, 26, was released by the Rangers earlier this month, and will look to continue his comeback from Tommy John surgery in the Detroit organization.
  • Detroit also re-signed Blaine Hardy, who put up a 1.67 ERA over 91 2/3 innings in Double-A and Triple-A this year. Hardy will head to the Arizona Fall League, according to Bobby Nightengale and Jason Beck of MLB.com. MLBTR has also learned that the lefty is expected to get a big league invite to spring training. The 26-year-old has produced generally solid results in the upper minors over the last four years, most of them in the Royals organization, but has yet to get a call-up to the bigs. Hardy is represented by Mike Mosa.

Rangers Release Justin Miller

By Jeff Todd | September 1, 2013 at 11:54am CDT

The Rangers have released right-handed reliever Justin Miller, the team announced in a press release. The 26-year-old had spent his entire career in the Texas system.

Miller had been good enough to be added to the team's 40-man roster after a strong 2011, but missed all of 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He has not been the same since his return, as he currently sports a 7.67 ERA over 27 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A. Though Miller has managed to strike out batters at a nice 11.0 K/9 rate during 2013, he has also posted a 5.3 BB/9 walk rate and allowed ten base hits per nine.

Rangers Notes: Darvish, Hamilton, Rodriguez, Miller

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 23, 2012 at 5:47pm CDT

No team in baseball has scored more runs or allowed fewer runs than the Rangers, so it's no wonder they're 13-3. Here are some Rangers-related links as they prepare to host the Yankees…

  • GM Jon Daniels tells Tyler Kepner of the New York Times that the team didn't mind potentially overpaying during the bidding process for Yu Darvish. “We said, ‘Here’s how we evaluate him, let’s go to the top of our means, whatever we’re willing to pay,’” Daniels said. “It was not about getting the best possible deal. It was about getting the player. And we had to be O.K. with that.”
  • One MLB agent said told Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a strong case for an extension, despite his history of off-field and injury issues. "He's done nothing but perform for them, and nothing he's done has affected him there,” the person said. “He's always performed there, and he continues to perform."
  • Ivan Rodriguez and the Rangers have discussed the possibility of working together in the future, Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com reports. "It would be good for our organization and he wants to stay involved in baseball, so we're looking forward to working something out," CEO Nolan Ryan said of his former battery-mate. Rodriguez formally announced his retirement today.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the Rangers have the best lineup in baseball and may be the best team in the game right now (video link).
  • The Rangers released Justin Miller, Anthony Andro of FOXSportsSouthwest tweets. The right-hander has a partial tear of his right UCL. Here's a complete list of the day's minor moves.

Minor Moves: Miller, Cintron

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 28, 2011 at 6:55pm CDT

The latest minor moves come from Matt Eddy of Baseball America…

  • The Dodgers released Justin Miller, who had been pitching at Triple-A. The 33-year-old posted a 5.73 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 9.0 BB/9 in 22 Triple-A innings for the Dodgers, Rangers and Marlins this year. He was useful for the Dodgers in 2010, throwing 24 1/3 innings in the big leagues.
  • The Padres released Alex Cintron in what appears to be a procedural move. The infielder retired in May, then decided to un-retire earlier this month. He last appeared in the Major Leagues in 2009.

Minor Moves: Simons, Miller, Corcoran, Hernandez

By Mark Polishuk | July 4, 2011 at 11:10pm CDT

A few transactions from the minor leagues…

  • The Marlins have signed right-hander Zach Simons, MLBTR has learned.  Simons, 26, was released by the Tigers last week.  Simons was drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2005 draft and has a 4.06 ERA and a 7.1 K/9 rate in seven minor league seasons in the Colorado and Detroit systems.
  • The Dodgers have signed Justin Miller to a minor league deal, MLBTR has learned.  This is Miller's second stint with L.A. after posting a 4.44 ERA in 19 appearances with the club in 2010 before being designated for assignment.  Miller has pitched for the Mariners' and Rangers' Triple-A teams this season, with a combined 5.31 ERA in 17 appearances.
  • The Dodgers signed right-hander Roy Corcoran to a minor league deal and assigned him to Double-A Chattanooga, according to the Southern League's transactions page.  Corcoran last piched in the Majors in 2009 and has a career 4.17 ERA in 82 appearances with the Expos, Nationals and Mariners between 2003 and 2009.  Corcoran pitched for the Astros' Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock last season.
  • The Yankees released Fernando Hernandez, according to the International League's transactions page.  Hernandez had posted a 5.91 ERA in 33 appearances for Double-A Trenton this season and made just one appearance for Triple-A Scranton before being released.  The right-hander, who turns 27 later this month, has three Major League innings to his name, all with Oakland in 2008.

Rangers Sign Justin Miller

By Mark Polishuk | April 29, 2011 at 6:19pm CDT

The Rangers have signed right-hander Justin Miller to a minor league contract, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter link).  Miller will report to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.  Miller was released by the Mariners earlier this week after he informed the team that he was going to opt out of his contract on May 1, due to a clause that gave him that right since Miller wasn't on Seattle's Major League roster by that date.

Texas has been looking for right-handed bullpen depth with Neftali Feliz on the DL and Alexi Ogando moved to the rotation.  Miller had an impressive 1.04 ERA in 8 2/3 Triple A innings this season, and in 19 appearances for the Dodgers in 2010, Miller posted a 4.44 ERA and an 11.1 K/9 rate.  The Rangers will be the 10th franchise Miller has pitched for during his 14-year pro career.

He last appeared in the big leagues with the Dodgers last season, when he posted impressive strikeout (11.1 K/9) and walk (3.0 BB/9) rates in 24 1/3 innings. Miller has also pitched for Giants, Marlins, and Blue Jays in an MLB career that started back in 2002.
