Stark On Lee, DeRosa, Phillies, Rays, Beltre

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 25, 2009 at 2:22pm CDT

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com calls this one of the slowest-moving trade markets in a while, but provides lots of rumors anyways:

  • Teams are making introductory calls now to set the tone for the next five weeks.
  • One official looking to add a reliever says no one is available.
  • With so few teams willing to part with players, sellers are asking for a lot.
  • The Brewers, Dodgers, Phillies and Mets are among the teams to call about Cliff Lee. The Indians would still have to be overwhelmed to part with him.
  • The Cubs have considered trying to reacquire Mark DeRosa.
  • They've also done some preliminary searching for a bat, but they're not sure where they'd play a new hitter so that gives the versatile DeRosa extra appeal.
  • Stark's heard nothing to suggest Bobby Valentine will end up managing the Nationals.
  • The Phillies have given indications that they'd part with Michael Taylor and/or Jason Donald in a deal for a top starter.
  • However, they won't listen on these players: Dominic Brown, Lou Marson, Kyle Drabek, Jason Knapp, Carlos Carrasco and Antonio Bastardo.
  • Doug Davis and Ian Snell aren't Phillies targets.
  • The Rays are looking for long-term upgrades. They'd like to acquire "the next J.P. Howell."
  • They're asking about young corner outfielders, rather than Jermaine Dye types.
  • Pedro Martinez still wants a $5MM salary (prorated) plus incentives, so don't expect him to sign soon.
  • The Reds have the best minor leaguers in the division and some could become trade chips.
  • The Mets checked in on Garrett Atkins.
  • Tony Reagins believes 2009 free agent Vladimir Guerrero can still hit.
  • At least one scout can't imagine Adrian Beltre being traded. Makes sense, given his shoulder injury and contract.

Holliday, Angels A Good Fit?

By Nat Boyle | June 21, 2009 at 11:57am CDT

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times wonders if Matt Holliday could wind up with the Halos, whether this season or next. Last offseason, Holliday rented a home in Laguna Beach and, says Shaikin,

"Loved it. So did his wife. So maybe, just maybe, the Hollidays could move to Orange County for good next year. If Jason Bay stays with the Boston Red Sox, Holliday would be the best outfielder available in free agency, the one acquisition that would allow the Angels to bid farewell to Vladimir Guerrero without too much of a fuss."

He notes that Scott Boras' negotiation style "clashes with the quick-strike style of Angels owner Arte Moreno."

Odds & Ends: Giles, Vlad, Bay

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 23, 2009 at 10:00am CDT

Links for your Memorial Day weekend…

  • Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the Giants should concede the division to the Dodgers and build for the future.
  • Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle shows that Nolan Ryan's presence has strengthened the Rangers by making it easier for them to recruit the coaches and executives they need.
  • As Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, Brian Giles says he's "not even close" to being done. The right fielder's making $9MM this year and hitting .161 so far.
  • Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports that the Angels would like to have Vladimir Guerrero back next year, at the right price. One executive said Vlad could be looking at a contract worth $5-7MM per year, for no more than two years when he becomes a free agent after this season.
  • As Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald notes, Jason Bay is "driving up his value almost daily." McAdam says there are indications the Red Sox could re-start extension talks during the All-Star Break.
  • Jim Salisbury of the Philadelphia Inquirer looks back at the deal that would have sent Andy Pettitte to the Phillies a decade ago.
  • In an article for ESPN.com, John Perrotto argues that the Pirates have no one to blame but themselves for their futility.

Stark On Pitchers, Vlad, Sabathia, Crawford

By Tim Dierkes | May 7, 2009 at 4:47pm CDT

More from Jayson Stark's Rumblings and Grumblings column today…

  • Stark rattles off a bunch of starting pitchers teams are "tracking" in advance of the trade deadline: Roy Halladay, Jake Peavy, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Aaron Harang, Erik Bedard, Kevin Millwood, Mark Buehrle, Doug Davis, Chris Young, Andy Pettitte, Bronson Arroyo, Jonathan Sanchez, Andy Sonnanstine, Jeff Niemann, Jason Marquis, Vicente Padilla, Jeff Suppan, and Russ Ortiz.  Not all of these guys are actually available, so check out the article for more analysis.
  • Teams are "backpedaling away" from Vladimir Guerrero as a free agent option after the season.  One scout sees Vlad as a DH right now.
  • C.C. Sabathia downplayed the importance of the out clause in his contract, talking to Stark.  Sabathia said it was "just something my agent came up with, and I just went with it."  Stark is skeptical though; he thinks the clause was specific to New York.
  • Stark talked to a baseball man familiar with the Rays' thinking who sees "zero chance" they don't exercise Carl Crawford's $10.125MM option for 2010.  The Rays have a three-year outlook on the budget.
  • With Jason Isringhausen ready within a few weeks, the Rays may have a surplus in the bullpen.  Stark doesn't expect Dan Wheeler or J.P. Howell to be moved, but teams are tracking them.
  • Stark sees Jorge Cantu as a trade candidate after the season.  He figures to make $5-6MM through arbitration.

Stark’s Latest: Halladay, Vlad, Magglio

By | April 23, 2009 at 1:47pm CDT

Jayson Stark's most recent column over at ESPN.com is absolutely chock-full of rumors and information…

  • Marlins president David Samson doesn't anticipate the Marlins ever implementing a fire sale again.  "We've put ourselves in a position, with salaries and the performance we're getting from players at a young age, that we don't have to do that anymore," said Samson.  The new stadium should help with attendance, which should in turn help with payroll.
  • Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi doesn't see his club trading Roy Halladay this season.  "I still don't see us doing it," said Ricciardi.  "I know ownership doesn't want to do it.  And I don't think, in my gut, that Doc really wants to be anywhere else."
  • Some MLB officials believe Vladimir Guerrero's recent pectoral injury could severely affect his free agent value this offseason.  "He could be a $1 million player in a year, with $4 million in incentives," said an unnamed official of one team.  "He's a tough guy to commit to."
  • Pedro Martinez continues to demand a $5 million paycheck.  It's doubtful any team, no matter how desperate, would commit to that price.
  • Some folks in the baseball world think Magglio Ordonez might be made available near the trade deadline.  Magglio has vesting options for 2010 and 2011, however, which could complicate a potential deal.
  • Teams are also tracking a few other Tigers players, including Carlos Guillen and Placido Polanco.

Odds And Ends: Wieters, Guerrero, Gonzalez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 18, 2009 at 10:37am CDT

A few links for Saturday morning…

  • Steve Melewski of MASN.com spoke with the Orioles Director of Player Development, David Stockstill, about Matt Wieters, who left last night's minor league game with an apparent right hamstring cramp.
  • More bad news for Angels fans, as Vladimir Guerrero is out for at least a month.
  • Luis Gonzalez tells Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post that he's already missing baseball and he wouldn't ask for much salary-wise.
  • Ozzie Guillen still doesn't have an answer in center field according to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. Cowley wrote earlier in the week that the Giants are looking to unload Aaron Rowand.
  • ESPN.com's Keith Law discusses high school prospect Donovan Tate, who's the son of former NFL running back Lars Tate. Law says Tate is the "top prep position player in this draft."

Vladimir Guerrero A Year Older

By Tim Dierkes | March 6, 2009 at 4:59pm CDT

According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero is actually 34 instead of his listed age of 33.  Vlad accidentally let it slip when talking to a reporter, but the Halos were already aware of his true birth date.  Guerrero is eligible for free agency after the season, but this shouldn’t change much.

The Guerrero age discrepancy was first noted by Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times back in August.

Angels Do Not Have Interest In Dye

By Ben Jones | January 14, 2009 at 12:51am CDT

WEDNESDAY: Bill Shaikin talked to Angels GM Tony Reagins, who shot down Cowley’s Dye rumor.  Reagins said, "No truth to that rumor."  Reagins apparently hasn’t talked to the White Sox for a while, though Shaikin’s source indicated the Angels did express interest in Dye before they re-signed Juan Rivera.

MONDAY: The Los Angeles Angels have interest in Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

According to a major-league scout, the Angels are the latest team to express interest in acquiring Dye now that the Mark Teixeira ship has set sail to New York. Unlike the talks with the Cincinnati Reds that stalled during the Winter Meetings, the Sox and Angels actually have a fit, Cowley wrote.

Cowley speculates that the White Sox would want Chone Figgins in return. Figgins could play third base and lead off for Chicago.

Cowley also notes that the Angels have a surplus of outfielders, but the Angels want to add protection in the lineup for Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter.

Cowley’s source also said the Angels do not like the rest of the free-agent outfield market and do not want to be pawns in the on-going Manny Ramirez saga.

The Angels are not one of the teams listed on Dye’s no-trade list, Cowley writes.

Odds And Ends: Guerrero, Blue Jays, Reds

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 8, 2008 at 11:55am CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • J.P. Ricciardi has begun "exploring other things" in case the Jays can’t bring back A.J. Burnett.
  • The Angels aren’t discussing a contract extension with Vladimir Guerrero yet.
  • Edinson Volquez and Johnny Cueto are off-limits according to Walk Jocketty.
  • The White Sox are interested in a 19-year-old Cuban third base prospect, Dayan Viciedo. Ken Williams, who has a history of acquiring Cuban players, may have the inside track on signing Viciedo.
  • The Astros signed a young international player of their own, Chia-Jen Lo. They announced Friday that they signed the 22-year-old Taiwanese righty to a minor league contract.
  • The Rockies added a 16-year-old Venezuelan pitcher, Alving Mejias.

Odds and Ends: Myers, Crede, Giants

By Tim Dierkes | October 29, 2008 at 11:23am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • The Brewers snagged infielder Casey McGehee off waivers from the Cubs.  The Crew also designated Joe Dillon for assignment.
  • The Reds signed 16 year-old lefty Ismael Guillon out of Venezuela.
  • MLB.com’s Marty Noble discusses the Mets and impending free agents Oliver Perez and Pedro Martinez.  The Mets will entertain re-signing Perez at their price, but they’ll let Pedro leave.  Any guesses on where he pitches next year?
  • Joe Pawlikowski at River Ave. Blues would like the Yankees to sign free agent outfielder Juan Rivera.  Brian Cashman traded Rivera, Randy Choate, and Nick Johnson to the Expos for Javier Vazquez back in 2003.
  • Brett Myers never wants to pitch in Boston again.
  • Two more free agent bargains from Dave Cameron: Joe Crede and Dave Ross.  Crede would be a solid one-year signing for the Dodgers or Twins.
  • South Side Sox doesn’t see the White Sox adding much else for second base.  There goes my Ray Durham idea.
  • El Lefty Malo examines the latest Giants rumors.
  • J.C. Bradbury provides values for Vladimir Guerrero, John Lackey, and Garret Anderson.
