Odds & Ends: McClung, Aurilia, Lincecum, Brewers

By Tim Dierkes | February 10, 2010 at 9:42pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • According to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, Seth McClung's deal with the Marlins would be worth $800K if he makes the team, not $600K as originally reported (link goes to Twitter).
  • MLB.com's Tom Singer wrote about the hazards of signing pitchers to five-year deals.
  • Baggarly tweets that even though he isn't retired, Rich Aurilia has a broadcasting deal in place that is contingent on him not finding a job on the field.
  • Tim Lincecum and the Giants are still no closer to a deal, reports Andrew Baggarly of The San Jose Mercury News. Their arbitration hearing is now less than two days away.
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy takes a look back at the Brewers' arbitration history. The team is scheduled to go to a hearing with Corey Hart tomorrow, which would be their first in 12 years.
  • Mariners' GM Jack Zduriencik did not rule out the possibility of adding a catcher, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com (via Twitter).
  • RotoAuthority analyzes the Blue Jays' closer situation from a fantasy baseball angle.
  • SI's Jon Heyman names his free agent winners and losers.  It's a well-done piece; my only gripe is Jason Marquis being in the loser bracket after signing a two-year, $15MM deal.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney reports that before signing with the Padres, catcher Yorvit Torrealba "offered himself to the Mets for $1.4MM."  The Mets "indicated they had no money to spend."
  • Aaron Schafer of Viva El Birdos grades the Cardinals' offseason moves and non-moves.

Odds & Ends: Garciaparra, Jackson, Barajas, Branyan

By Tim Dierkes | February 4, 2010 at 5:30pm CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • Nomar Garciaparra told Lou Merloni of WEEI.com that he would like to play in 2010, if the right situation presents itself.  Garciaparra played in 65 games for the A's last season, hitting .281/.314/.388 with 3 homers.
  • RotoAuthority discusses the fantasy prospects of Rangers starter Colby Lewis.
  • Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says that while an arbitration hearing is likely for Edwin Jackson and the Diamondbacks, "the team has broached the idea of a two-year deal."
  • Piecoro also says the D'Backs are considering bringing recently-designated lefty Dana Eveland back.
  • Talking to agents who dealt with the Mets this winter, Murray Chass believes the team was incapable of multitasking.  On a related note, MetsBlog's Matthew Cerrone believes the team remains interested in free agent catcher Rod Barajas.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says Russell Branyan was seeking a three-year deal in the $20-30MM range earlier this offseason.  At this point I'd say he's looking at a one-year deal at maybe $3MM.
  • Unlike CEO Jeff Moorad, Padres GM Jed Hoyer said all the right things regarding Adrian Gonzalez (Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reporting).
  • Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Twins are in a position of strength in that they don't need Orlando Hudson or Jarrod Washburn.  He doesn't feel they'd still be willing to offer $5MM to Washburn.  Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports notes that if the Mariners re-sign Erik Bedard, as has been rumored, they probably wouldn't sign Washburn.
  • Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times says the grievance has been settled regarding the Ramirez Provision, involving forced charity donations as part of contracts.

Odds & Ends: Mauer, Hairston, Buck, Benson

By Tim Dierkes | February 2, 2010 at 5:10pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • We shouldn't expect a Joe Mauer extension soon, according to this tweet from USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
  • The Padres avoided arbitration with Scott Hairston, signing the outfielder to a one-year deal worth $2.45MM, according to MLB.com's Corey Brock.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports believes that the Tigers have moved into the non-denial stage regarding Johnny Damon (via Twitter).
  • A's outfielder Travis Buck has a chip on his shoulder after watching the A's acquire multiple outfielders, reports CSNBayArea's Mychael Urban.  But as ESPN's Rob Neyer points out, Buck hasn't done much recently with the bat.
  • Free agent outfielder Darin Erstad told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick he'd love to play in 2010, but "there is nowhere to find at-bats."
  • Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times tweets that the Dodgers "remain interested in Jeff Weaver, but their roster situation could prevent them from offering him a major-league deal."
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports names the D'Backs, Cubs, Reds, and Nationals as teams monitoring free agent starter Kris Benson.  Benson didn't pitch much in the last three seasons due to rotator cuff surgery.
  • Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. further explained his rationale behind the Cliff Lee trade, reports Scott Lauber of The News Journal.  Amaro's reasoning didn't sway my opinion; none of the three prospects he received are in Keith Law's top 100 (though Ramirez is #101).  The long-term value of Phillippe Aumont, J.C. Ramirez, and Tyson Gillies should not outweigh the extra 4-5 wins Lee would've provided in 2010.  And did Amaro even shop Lee around for the best package?
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star is pessimistic on the Royals, who he says don't offer much beyond Zack Greinke, Billy Butler, and Joakim Soria.
  • RotoAuthority looks at Boston's closer situation from a fantasy baseball point of view.

Odds & Ends: Mauer, Turnbow, Loaiza

By Tim Dierkes | January 25, 2010 at 1:58pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wonders if the convergence of Joe Mauer, Ron Shapiro, and Bill Smith in St. Paul Wednesday for a Rick Reilly program will accelerate extension talks.
  • The Rockies "remain firmly in the mix" for free agent reliever Derrick Turnbow, reports Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.  Turnbow could make a choice by Wednesday.
  • In his latest MLB.com mailbag, Jordan Bastian notes that Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan is out of options.
  • MLBTR's resident translator, Nick Collias, passes along this Esteban Loaiza interview with Hector Linares from the Mexican newspaper Excelsior.  Loaiza says he's doing everything possible to make it back to the big leagues, and has received a few calls from teams.  He last pitched for the White Sox in June of '08.
  • Bill Conlin of the Philadelphia Daily News explains why the Phillies' Cliff Lee trade was the right move.  He says fans don't understand, and the Phils needed the prospects.
  • Aaron Gleeman wouldn't mind seeing Delmon Young benched and Jim Thome added by the Twins to platoon at DH.
  • RotoAuthority assesses David Wright's fantasy prospects for 2010.
  • Baseball America's Ben Badler says MLB voided the seven-figure contract Dominican third baseman Duanel Jones had with San Francisco.  ESPN's Jorge Arangure says (via Twitter) the move was prompted by Jones failing a drug test administered by the Giants.
  • Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie told MASN's Steve Melewski that his $120K pay cut from 2008 to 2009 did not affect his '09 performance.

Odds & Ends: Draft, Moyer, Cubs

By Tim Dierkes | August 13, 2009 at 9:46am CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • RotoAuthority looks at the worst closers in baseball.
  • Indians first-round draft pick Alex White is "seeking top five money," according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  Hoynes says the Indians are optimistic about signing him before Monday's deadline.
  • As you might expect, Chico Harlan of the Washington Post says the Stephen Strasburg talks between the Nationals and Scott Boras will go down to the wire.  MLBTR will be covering the signing deadline intensely, as we did last year.
  • Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer has a source saying the Phillies' bullpen demotion of Jamie Moyer was "not in any way influenced by money."  The team's timing of the move was impeccable, regardless.
  • Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times talked to Cubs GM Jim Hendry, who isn't anticipating any waiver moves for his team.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider link) speculates on a handful of teams that could use recently-designated third baseman Bill Hall.
  • Reliever Justin Speier was gracious about his release from the Angels, according to Kevin Baxter of the L.A. Times.

Odds & Ends: Draft, Rangers, Feliz

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2009 at 4:10pm CDT

Another collection of random links…

  • A fresh fantasy baseball mailbag over at RotoAuthority, where I address David Ortiz, Francisco Liriano, and more.
  • The Orioles claimed pitcher Dave Davidson off waivers from the Marlins and sent him to Triple A, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN.
  • Matt Belisle cleared waivers and accepted his Triple A assignment, according to Jack Etkin of Inside the Rockies.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo predicts the top 20 picks in the June draft.  Mike Minor to the Padres, Aaron Crow to the Pirates?
  • Rangers owner Tom Hicks might be willing to sell his controlling interest in the team, according to MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.
  • Scott Lauber of The News Journal thinks Pedro Feliz is changing the Phillies' mind about his $5MM option for 2010 with his .307/.373/.433 start.  His 10% walk rate is a career best.
  • Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues discusses the Mark DeRosa-Yankees rumor.
  • Alexei Ramirez is being sued for $20MM in the Dominican Republic "for allegedly violating a contract he signed with local talent scouts before inking a major league contract."  Not sure how they arrived at that figure.

Odds & Ends: DeRosa, Bruney, Cooper

By Tim Dierkes | May 28, 2009 at 8:44am CDT

Let's kick it off today with some odds and ends.

  • RotoAuthority discusses responding to lame trade offers in your fantasy league.
  • Reliever Mike MacDougal will join the Nationals tomorrow, according to MLB.com's Bill Ladson.  Who knows, he could be closing for them by next week.
  • Talking to Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune, Cubs GM Jim Hendry defended the Mark DeRosa trade.  Here is my problem with it: it was a financially-motivated deal made by a big-market team, and did not bring back players who could help in 2009.
  • According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the White Sox acquired journeyman minor league infielder Anderson Machado from the Pirates for a player to be named later.
  • Padres exec Paul DePodesta explains the Jody Gerut for Tony Gwynn Jr. swap.  DePodesta's third bullet point, money, had to be the overriding factor given Gwynn's negligible value around the league.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle sees Bobby Crosby as perhaps a more pressing trade situation for the A's than Matt Holliday.
  • Dr. James Andrews found no structural damage in Brian Bruney's elbow, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.  Given the uncertainty, though, a bullpen acquisition would still make sense.
  • It looks like the writing is on the wall for Astros manager Cecil Cooper.  Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle lists his offenses.
  • Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is skeptical the Cardinals will make a big move.
  • Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus agrees that the Pirates are the favorite for Dominican talent Miguel Angel Sano, and says the Rays, Cubs, A's, Blue Jays, Yankees, Rangers, and Twins are also after him.  It's speculated by McDaniel and elsewhere that the Pirates could budget less toward their fourth overall pick in June to compensate for Sano.  John Perrotto of Inside Pittsburgh Sports says they like Kyle Gibson, Aaron Crow, Bobby Borchering, and Wil Myers.  Tanner Scheppers did not give the Bucs permission to redraft him.
