Heyman’s Latest: K-Rod, Furcal, Blalock

By Tim Dierkes | October 15, 2008 at 5:59pm CDT

Non-Manny notes from Jon Heyman’s latest…

  • The Angels and Mets "appear hesitant" to give Francisco Rodriguez five years.  There’s not an obvious suitor to overpay K-Rod, but the Mets are the closest.
  • Heyman sees Brian Fuentes getting about $11MM per year.  Ken Rosenthal recently suggested even more money.
  • Doug Melvin could become a candidate for the Mariners job if the Brewers aren’t able to extend him.  Doesn’t seem to make sense since Melvin is signed through 2009.
  • Heyman believes Chris Antonetti in Cleveland is contractually guaranteed the GM job in the future.
  • The Dodgers will try to re-sign Rafael Furcal, no surprise there.
  • A scout sang the praises of Hank Blalock’s second-half hitting (.281/.324/.532 after the break).  Blalock may be on the trading block.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Manny, Mussina, Cano, Lowe

By Tim Dierkes | October 15, 2008 at 1:39pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal’s latest column at FOX Sports is jam-packed with rumors.

  • Manny Ramirez will generate plenty of interest on the free agent market; he wants at least four years.  There was a report earlier this month that Scott Boras expected to get five years.  The term will be a crucial factor.  Rosenthal names the Phillies, Mets, and Yankees as three teams that may pursue Manny.
  • The Mariners’ rebuilding effort will likely be spearheaded by a first-time GM, not an ideal scenario in the opinion of some baseball people.
  • The Dodgers lost Shane Victorino twice in the Rule 5 draft.  Tony Jackson had more details on that history a few days ago.
  • Rosenthal talked to friends of Mike Mussina who remain convinced he will retire.  Buster Olney got a different vibe recently.
  • Rosenthal notes that the Dodgers’ interest in Robinson Cano is "sincere," but it’s unknown what they’d give up for him.
  • Derek Lowe’s teammates say he has little interest in playing for the Mets or Yankees.
  • Back in ’07, Blake DeWitt was considered a possible throw-in in a proposed Joe Blanton to the Dodgers deal.  Rumor was the A’s wanted three frontline prospects from the Dodgers, DeWitt not among them.

Odds and Ends: Castillo, Avila, Young

By Tim Dierkes | October 15, 2008 at 11:28am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • Chat today, 2pm CST.
  • Mets GM Omar Minaya regrets the Luis Castillo contract.  In another post, Minaya admits that in an ideal world he wouldn’t have to give multiyear deals to relievers, but that’s the way it is.
  • The Tigers decided not to allow the Mariners to interview assistant GM Al Avila.
  • Outfielder Luis Gonzalez would be open to re-signing with the Marlins, but it doesn’t seem likely.  Gonzo hopes to play in 2009, as he’d like to reach certain statistical milestones.
  • Viva El Birdos examines the Cardinals’ trade chips.
  • Charley Walters wouldn’t be surprised if the Twins have trade talks with the Giants regarding Delmon Young.  The Giants seem more likely to pursue a slugging infielder, however.

Odds and Ends: Hoyer, Denker, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | October 13, 2008 at 11:55am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Baseball America ranks the teams by their total draft expenditures.  The Royals spent over $11MM, leading the pack.
  • SI’s Tom Verducci talked to one "club pitching expert" who considers free agent Chan Ho Park a sleeper starter for next year.
  • MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan figures a long-term extension for Josh Hamilton will be a top priority for the Rangers this winter.  Sullivan also has a note about Jake Peavy only wanting to go to an NL team, despite the recent article about Peavy being open to three AL clubs.
  • Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer turned down a chance to interview for the Mariners job, according to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald.
  • McCovey Chronicles is baffled by the Giants’ decision to let second baseman Travis Denker go.
  • Chad Durbin suggests Manny Ramirez charged in aggressively from left field yesterday for show.
  • We took a look at Ryan Dempster from a fantasy baseball perspective a few days ago.

DiPoto Leading For Seattle GM Job?

By Tim Dierkes | October 12, 2008 at 11:55am CDT

From ESPN’s Buster Olney this morning:

Heard this: Arizona executive Jerry DiPoto is among the front-runners to get the Seattle job, and if he does land it, this will increase the likelihood that Pat Gillick winds up serving as some kind of consultant for the Mariners.

DiPoto was reportedly among five candidates interviewed this week; Larry Stone profiled them here.  By the way, A’s assistant GM David Forst decided not to interview with the Mariners.  Forst may end up taking on a larger role with the A’s.  Phil Rogers crossed Rick Hahn of the White Sox off the list, and Larry LaRue reminded us that Chris Antonetti also passed.

Odds And Ends: Cuban, Zaun, Hall, Mariners

By Alejandro Leal | October 11, 2008 at 10:55am CDT

Saturday morning linkage:

  • Cubs GM Jim Hendry didn’t consult the prospective new owners before picking up Rich Harden’s option, and that’s fine by Mark Cuban.
  • The Blue Jays are expected to pick up Rod Barajas’ option; there’s still a possibility that Gregg Zaun will return. The 37-year old Zaun is eligible to become a free agent.
  • Speaking of catchers, Sox Machine analyzes the pros/cons of the White Sox keeping or moving backup catcher Toby Hall.
  • The Yankees are correctly focusing on their rotation and will sign one or two free agent pitchers, thinks the LoHud Journal News’ Peter Abraham, which in turn may prohibit them from going after Mark Teixeira.
  • A’s assistant GM David Forst will not interview with the Mariners for their vacant GM position.

Odds and Ends: Moore, Manny, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | October 9, 2008 at 11:06am CDT

Reading material for Thursday…

  • NBC San Diego reports that John Moores plans to sell his 49% of the Padres as part of his divorce settlement.
  • Derrick Goold looks at the many teams that might consider Rafael Furcal, including the Cardinals.  Imagine the kind of contract he’d be looking at if he’d been healthy all year.
  • I did a Q&A with Sox and Pinstripes recently.
  • According to Mariners president Chuck Armstrong, the new GM will have less power and a smaller payroll than Bill Bavasi.  The list of candidates is down to ten.
  • MLB.com’s Dick Kaegel talked to Royals GM Dayton Moore, who wants to add an offensive player (a hitter, not a guy who offends).  Moore won’t be moving Joakim Soria to the rotation, though some in the organization support it.  Also, MLB Interviews chatted Royals with Joe Posnanski of the Kansas City Star.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post sees a parallel between Mike Mussina and Jimmy Key.  Some Yankees officials expect Mussina to file for free agency to keep his options open.
  • In another article, Sherman warns suitors that Manny Ramirez is a "con man."
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney runs through possible destinations for Orlando Hudson, including the Mets, White Sox, Indians, and Angels.
  • Anthony Marenna of DC Metroblog provides an offseason plan for the Nationals, while Jacob Jackson takes on the A’s at Athletics Nation.

Odds and Ends: Hudson, Cano, Mariners GM

By Tim Dierkes | October 8, 2008 at 9:01am CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • ESPN’s Jayson Stark reminds us that Manny Ramirez could’ve been traded to the Phillies in July.  But the Phils wouldn’t offer Lou Marson, didn’t like the idea of Manny in right field, and were concerned about Ramirez’s hustle.
  • Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog gives his early sense of the team’s offseason approach.  He doesn’t seem them splurging on one of the big free agent names.
  • MLB.com’s Marty Noble heard Orlando Hudson "yearns to play for the Mets" (hat tip to MetsBlog).
  • Jamey Newberg believes in the Rangers’ plan.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post doesn’t believe Robinson Cano will be traded, because the Yankees are valuing him as if 2008 did not occur.  He names Fausto Carmona as an example of a pitcher the Yanks would not accept for Cano.
  • Sherman also notes that Bobby Abreu and the ivy-covered brick wall at Wrigley might not be the best match.
  • The Mariners will interview five people for their GM vacancy this week: Peter Woodfork (D’Backs), Jerry DiPoto (D’Backs), Tony Bernazard (Mets), Kim Ng (Dodgers), and Tony LaCava (Blue Jays).
  • The Angels signed Korean pitcher Jang Pil-Joong, who just finished serving in the army.
  • I did a couple of interviews recently: over the phone with MLB Interviews and over email with Pinstripes Published.

Odds and Ends: Cabrera, Sabathia, Gillick

By Tim Dierkes | October 2, 2008 at 11:56am CDT

Your hot stove links for Thursday…

  • Ken Fidlin of the Toronto Sun thinks the Blue Jays should consider Rafael Furcal. I concur.  But even after missing most of ’08, Furcal probably won’t have to take a one-year deal unless he wants to.
  • Phillies GM Pat Gillick didn’t rule out the possibility of returning to Toronto as the team president.
  • River Ave. Blues doesn’t see the Yankees or Red Sox acquiring Matt Holliday.
  • The Mariners are down to 10-12 names in their GM seach, before conducting a single interview.
  • David Steele of the Baltimore Sun wants the Orioles to give Daniel Cabrera one more chance.  Cabrera is arbitration-eligible and should earn at least $3MM in 2009.
  • Jim Baumbach of Newsday looks at free agent considerations for the Yankees and Mets.
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says there are indications the Giants will gauge C.C. Sabathia’s interest in signing with them.  I would be surprised to see the Giants win the bidding.
  • Angels owner Arte Moreno seems willing to stretch payroll past $124MM for the right players.  The Angels’ postseason performance will be a big factor.
  • Central Maine Sports Blog talked to Gary Carter, Buster Olney, Brad Wilkerson, and others about the Montreal Expos.

Odds and Ends: LaCava, Colletti, Andruw

By Tim Dierkes | October 1, 2008 at 12:00pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • I did a Q&A with the Roselle Press.  The article includes a sweet picture of me hacking the Internet.
  • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald speculates on the new-look 2009 Marlins.  If defense is a goal, they could look to acquire Adrian Beltre and try Jorge Cantu at first base.  Randy Winn could improve the defense in right.
  • John Fay runs through the Reds’ nine free agents.  He believes Jerry Hairston Jr. wants to return.
  • Brian Cashman wants to acquire a real first baseman, rather than have Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui spend time there.
  • The Mariners received permission to interview Blue Jays assistant GM Tony LaCava, according to Geoff Baker.
  • It’s still not known whether the Dodgers will bring GM Ned Colletti back for the final year of his contract.  Interesting note from ESPN’s Buster Olney – the Andruw Jones signing was engineered by owner Frank McCourt rather than Colletti.
  • Olney feels Brian Cashman is more likely to pursue Derek Lowe than Mark Teixeira.
  • Will Joe Girardi’s presence discourage free agents from signing with the Yankees?
  • McCovey Chronicles sees the Giants trading for a second or third baseman this winter.  I tossed out a bunch of names in my Offseason Outlook.
  • Pedro Alvarez clammed up when asked precisely what time he accepted the original deal from the Pirates.
  • MetsBlog tries to figure out whether Ryan Church loves or hates New York.
  • Oliver Perez predicts a tough offseason following the Mets’ final-day elimination.  On the bright side, he stands to earn a ridiculous amount of money as a free agent.
