UPDATE, 12-10-07 at 10:08pm: No more Torres drama...he'll join the Brewers for the 2008 season.
UPDATE, 12-8-07 at 12:06pm: Seems this story isn't over. Torres is contemplating retirement, in which case the Brewers would probably lose the two prospects for nothing. Torres will talk it over with his family and take a few days to decide.
FROM 12-7-07 at 2:16pm:
According to Tom Haudricourt, the Brewers have acquired reliever Salomon Torres for minor league relievers Marino Salas and Kevin Roberts.
Torres turns 36 in March. He threw a monstrous 280 innings in relief over 2004-2006, so it's no surprise his elbow started barking in 2007. His strikeout rate in '07 was actually a career high, but his groundball rate decreased and he allowed a lot more home runs and hits than usual. Torres makes $3.2MM in '08 and has a $3.75MM club option for '09.
Haudricourt actually wrote the Brewers' top ten prospect list for Baseball America, so believe him when he says Salas and Roberts are good arms.
Will the Pirates keep dealing? It's known that relievers Damaso Marte and John Grabow are on the block.

They are making a big mistake if they plan on Torres being a closer.

Just ask Greg Gross how up to date Haudricourt is with the farm system.

he can be valuable as a middle reliever but i definitely agree he won't be good closing

A good low risk-high reward trade for the Brewers. Roberts was 23 in High A, and Salas was nothing special. I don't expect Yost to overuse Torres like the Pirates' managers have. Plus, even though he'll be 36, his arm was dormant from 97-01 when he was a coach, so he's still got some good years left in him. I still think the Brewers are going to go out and get a true closer.

Ahhh, Mr Torres ~ still got your "top-prospect" baseball card from like 1990... Wonder how you have been given a shot to stick around for oh so long with those miserable, miserable numbers you always provided…

It can't hurt...their bullpen is awful. I actually think he makes it better.

Well now we have some guys who were top setup men in the league at time or another.
Mota- was good before NY, does he just need a change(still throws hard)
Torres- was a good Setup man from 2004-2006..still throws hard
Riske- has pitched well in the AL should drop his ERA slightly in the NL.
Turnbow- was a decent setup guy and a good closer for a year and a half
any one of these guys could be used to get 3 outs in the 9th... Mike Maddux is one of the best pitching coaches out there and has done very well in bringing once good arms back to dominance.

There is absolutely NO "dominance" in the list you just gave. None. Serviceable is the word you are hoping for here...

The Brewers gave up too much for Torres. He will be 37 coming off elbow injury (and probably surgery now). He is a guy that you can pick up much cheaper after the season starts. They are near the bottom of the barrel here. Salas (26) has had more K than IP for most of his career and he was ready to get a chance to earn a spot this year. Roberts (23) was probably going to be promoted to AA. Of course they picked Salas off of waivers in 06, but still seems like too much.

agreed on the serviceable stuff.. from what i see, every single reliever the brewers have is shaky. turnbow and riske will compete for the closers job with mota and torres being used in middle relief
Posted by: NEILarado | December 07, 2007 at 03:15 PM
True. The only guy there that I feel confident saying he'll pitch well is Riske. Torres is winding down, Mota is pretty much done, and Turnbow is so up and down that he cant be depended on.
And the fact that those two players would be so valuable to the Brewers says a lot about how poor their farm system is now from attrition

The Brewers farm system is far from being picked bare. They basically gave up nothing they're going to miss for Torres

Really bad trade for the Brewers, i'm really dissapointed. What kind of stupid move were they thinking of of trading 2 good young arms for a 37 year old that's career is almost done and will probably need elbow surgery with all the innings he's pitched.

On behalf of Pirate fans everywhere (all 8 of us that are left), I say good job, Huntington. You spun worthless, overpaid crap (Torres) into cheap, probably worthless crap.
Now if you can spin off a couple other useless contracts, then you won't have to do anything stupid like trade Jason Bay, Jack Wilson or Ian Snell (cuz this offseason, no one is gonna break the bank for anyone not named Santana, Cabrera, Haren or Bedard).
Of course, if the Pirates actually spent as much money as the Brewers, a team that plays in a city with 800,000 fewer people, or the Reds, who have about 400,000 fewer people than Pittsburgh, maybe the Buccos would actually be competitive again in my lifetime.
Bob Nutting wakes up every day and thanks the good lord for Jeffrey Loria, the only man who can make the Pirates not look cheap.

Now that is good work CJax33....nice post.

Come on Solomon, you're not going to quit just because you were traded to the Brewers. Milwaukee isn't that crappy a town.
Then again...
Posted by: TTH | December 08, 2007 at 04:41 PM
Maybe Torres can make friends with that new Chinese basketball guy the Bucks drafted.
They'll have something in common. Neither of them want to be in Milwaukee.

NMW25tmc, Torres and Yi are in line with about 99.9 percent of America's population when it comes to that one.
In other bonding stories, Mota and Turnbow can talk to other about their first time getting busted for steriods.
