« Royals Still Want Kuroda; Could Turn To Silva | Main | Prior To Be Non-tendered? »
UPDATE, 12-11-07 at 10:43pm: MLB.com's Carrie Muskat says the deal is for four years and $48MM.
FROM 12-11-07 at 9:40pm:
Dave Kaplan of WGN Radio reports that the Cubs have signed Kosuke Fukudome to a four-year deal. Kaplan says it's for about $50MM, maybe a hair more. Fukudome will be a free agent after the fourth year; there will be no arbitration.
The Cubs got their man for right field; he'll provide a strong dose of OBP. The quality of available right fielders drops off drastically after Fukudome. The deal isn't without risk, obviously, since Fukudome is untested in the Majors. Peter Gammons talked to a GM who described Fukudome as "a cross between Ichiro and a young, healthy Mark Kotsay."

Kos-K yay!

Woooooooooooooo
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 09:44 PM
Time for Fucs and Bobosan to come get their medicine. I know they won't show up though.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:45 PM
Hopefully we'll get the Roberts/Bedard deal done before Christmas.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:46 PM
Man, what an awful offseason for the White Sox. They are approaching Giants territory.
Posted by: beauhoopman | December 11, 2007 at 09:46 PM
hahahaha, that should be interesting if they do.
Posted by: trober81 | December 11, 2007 at 09:46 PM
Congrats cubs fan, and yes i agree with a previous poster, I wish Harry Carey was still alive to pronounce his name during the season, and BTW, do you not think major league baseball will mandate this guy to wear his first name on teh back of his uni, you know, to prevent any future "goofs"
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 11, 2007 at 09:47 PM
Bedard isnt coming the Cubs have said they arent interested. Roberts talks are gonna heat up ASAP now.
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 09:48 PM
I know trob, Bedard is a stretch but I have a feeling about it. With the Hendry-McFail relationship I think it's not so far fetched if the Cubs are willing to pony up. Hell, we may even get Tejada thrown in the deal.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:49 PM
Just because the Cubs expressed no interest in Bedard doesn't make it so. I KNOW IT'S A STRETCH. Let me dream though.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:50 PM
what the hell kind of comparison is a young, healthy, mark kotsay??!
Posted by: trober81 | December 11, 2007 at 09:50 PM
Who would the Cubs trade for Roberts, Bedard AND Tejada???
Posted by: PDubs | December 11, 2007 at 09:51 PM
Here's to the second coming of Kaz Matsui.
Posted by: MO Boiler | December 11, 2007 at 09:51 PM
Cubs fans...they think that because they haven't won a world series in 90+ that teams are gonna line up to give them players to make a run at a championship.
Posted by: NLBaseball21 | December 11, 2007 at 09:51 PM
I think you're getting a little crazy with the trade ideas. I'd be very surprised if we got Tejada or Bedard and certainly not all 3. But this is great news.
Now all you Royals and Padres fans can eat your crow.
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 09:51 PM
It wouldnt matter, the Red Sox or Tigers would still beat them in the World Series.
Posted by: beauhoopman | December 11, 2007 at 09:53 PM
Well supposedly Bedard is going to the Dodgers soon in a block buster that is possibly going to be announced soon. If that's true then it won't matter. I don't see them getting Tejada anyway. They should get Roberts though. The deal for him would be Murton+Marshall+???(Not Pie, Soto, or Hill).
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 09:54 PM
what does the lineup look like as of now...correct me if I'm wrong
Soriano
Theriot
Lee
Ramirez
Fukudome
Derosa
Soto
Pie?
Posted by: ndpanda24 | December 11, 2007 at 09:54 PM
Here's the ESPN link...they don't have salary yet: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3151060
Posted by: gobanana2251 | December 11, 2007 at 09:54 PM
I am just glad the guy finally signed with someone. Let's hope he isn't anything like the Mark Kotsay of the last two-three years(one of the most useless players in the league) at any point of the contract.
Posted by: TTH | December 11, 2007 at 09:55 PM
Typepad sucks. They called this post spam.
2B Roberts
RF DeRosa
1B Lee
3B Ramirez
CF Fukudome
LF Soriano
SS Tejada
C Soto
Zambrano
Bedard
Lilly
Prior
Hill
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:56 PM
"The deal for him would be Murton+Marshall+???(Not Pie, Soto, or Hill)."
Gallagher + Colvin + someone
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 09:57 PM
Yeah, the cubs might get roberts, but the reds are about to get Bedard, so good luck against that!
Posted by: redsguy44 | December 11, 2007 at 09:58 PM
I know the prospect of all 3 is sick. Let me dream.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 09:58 PM
"2B Roberts
RF DeRosa
1B Lee
3B Ramirez
CF Fukudome
LF Soriano
SS Tejada
C Soto"
If that lineup were to happen, and it wouldn't, DeRosa would be hitting 8th...
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 09:59 PM
Why? DeRosa has the best OBP of the likely candidates.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:01 PM
I'm waiting for the update that says he still hasn't made a decission to come to the cubs and a decission isn't expected for another 2 weeks.
Posted by: NLBaseball21 | December 11, 2007 at 10:02 PM
Soriano would never hit 7
Posted by: ndpanda24 | December 11, 2007 at 10:02 PM
The lineup will be
1. Soriano
2. Fukudome
3. Lee
4. Ramirez
5. DeRosa
6. Soto
7. The Riot
8. Pie
If we got Roberts, and thats still a big IF, it would probably be:
1. Soriano
2. Roberts
3. Lee
4. Fukudome
5. Ramirez
6. Soto
7. The Riot
8. Pie
Just my 2 cents, thats how I would bat them.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:05 PM
Yea, bedard is less likely to go to the dodgers since it seems like that are about to get kuroda, i can definitely see the reds getting bedard, so my question is, when are the cards going to make their big move, (and no, signing silva or loshe is not really a big move)
Posted by: bravesbeast | December 11, 2007 at 10:05 PM
It's not that hard to construct logical lineups, just say that was our starting roster
it'd go
Soriano
Roberts
Lee
Ramirez
Fukudome
Tejada
Soto
DeRosa
or
Roberts
Fukudome
Lee
Ramirez
Soriano
Tejada
Soto
DeRosa
possibly switch Soto/DeRosa
DeRosa almost never hit in the 2 spot with last years lineup, if we added Fukudome/Roberts he'd never bat there.
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 10:05 PM
congrats cubs fans, a good signing. probably a little overpriced but who the hell isnt these days. if the brewers or cards dont make some other moves soon, yall might be running away with the nl central...
Posted by: txrangers22 | December 11, 2007 at 10:06 PM
This is a nice step in the right direction. Now, there's a big decision to be made by tomorrow midnight (i will not mention his name).
Tejada seems destined for elsewhere. Bedard may indeed be heading to the Reds...or not. Nobody had MCabrera and Willis going to the Tigers before it happened though, did they? Roberts seems to be a likely target now. Speed is what we need. This is in no way a knock on Mark DeRosa...I sure hope he don't take it that way.
Posted by: icantbelieveitsnotbittner | December 11, 2007 at 10:07 PM
I could also see Fukudome batting before Ramirez because Lou did it a few times with Floyd, but I would disagree with it being done.
Posted by: Game555 | December 11, 2007 at 10:07 PM
Soto will surprise...he is going to be really good...and solidify the 6 hole all year.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:07 PM
Hopefully Fukudome lives up to the hype. I think this isn't a bad signing, but it's always risky with Japanese players. We'll have to see how he pans out.
Posted by: aggieastro | December 11, 2007 at 10:11 PM
Dodgers are NOT getting Bedard. Stop drooling over our young players!
Congrats to the Cubs and their fans for getting Fukudome. This helps Dodgers fans out tremendously, because it leaves the Giants and Padres in a likely bidding war for Aaron Rowand.
Posted by: Speedy | December 11, 2007 at 10:12 PM
The folks at Baseball Prospectus have shown that the best way to arrange a line up is in descending order of OBP. Short of this, line up changes don't really significantly change how many a runs a team can generate, other than batting the pitcher lead-off. As long as this isn't a premature report or a cruel joke, the Cubs line up is looking real solid no matter the order.
Posted by: icantbelieveitsnotbittner | December 11, 2007 at 10:13 PM
Fukudome will bat second with his high OBS and walks. He is left handed so he will help Soriano and Lee see some better picthes
Posted by: uww1 | December 11, 2007 at 10:14 PM
I seriously doubt the Cubs system has enough to get Roberts and either Tejada or Bedard, let alone both.
In those lineups projections, when Z pitches shouldn't we consider batting Theriot ninth. We can only hope that if they get Roberts, they'll move DeRo to SS.
Posted by: TTH | December 11, 2007 at 10:15 PM
If we get roberts then Fukudome will bat 5th
Posted by: uww1 | December 11, 2007 at 10:15 PM
The Cubs definitely need the dose of good OBP. As a speaker for the sane Cub fans on this board, we do not see Bedard as a possibility since one Dodger/Angel/Yankee/Red Sox prospect is probably worth 3 top Cubs prospects.
Fukudome looks to be an exciting and fundamentally sound player, it should be a fun season in Chicago.
Also, I don't have any idea why people post projected lineups on this board. Not only do lineups change from day to day with regular managers, but Lou will have 7 different lineups each week...and that includes the off-day.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 10:19 PM
"Typepad sucks. They called this post spam."
That's because nothing you have to say is worth others reading.

Well, at least the Padre signed a Japanese dude. Iguchi has apparently agreed to a one year deal with the Padres.

Fuk off Arod. Seriously.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:25 PM
nice find genericpads fan, should be a good signing
i dont see where we will get those 1-2 outfielders we so desperatly need... but this is what makes Kevin Towers, Kevin Towers... he'll find something
Posted by: Green Grove | December 11, 2007 at 10:28 PM
" "The deal for him would be Murton+Marshall+???(Not Pie, Soto, or Hill)."
Gallagher + Colvin + someone"
Yeah thats the other possible deal, just saying what I have heard.
"
Dodgers are NOT getting Bedard. Stop drooling over our young players!
Congrats to the Cubs and their fans for getting Fukudome. This helps Dodgers fans out tremendously, because it leaves the Giants and Padres in a likely bidding war for Aaron Rowand."
Yeah I also was just saying what I read on a Orioles Board, I didnt think I would have made the deal, the Dodgers have a really good young nucleus and they don't need to ship it out to be successful.
"This is a nice step in the right direction. Now, there's a big decision to be made by tomorrow midnight (i will not mention his name)."
Mark Prior...please take one more shot on him Cubs...PLEASE
"Yeah, the cubs might get roberts, but the reds are about to get Bedard, so good luck against that!"
And they still won't compete in the division, Bedard's arm will be dead by the end of the season thanks to our old Chicago favorite! DUSTY...lol, I am still wondering why..
The Cubs wouldn't bat Alfonso first if they got Roberts, Roberts is so much better then Soriano as a leadoff hitter, and Soriano's power would be more useful in the middle of the order, the whole "he bats better in the #1 spot" he is a good hitter he doesnt just forget how to hit if you put him 5th. He would be in between Kos-K and Rammy which would get him plenty of pitches to hit.
Order & Positions:
2B. Brian Roberts
SS. Mark DeRosa (if freakin Theriot can play short, so can Mark)
1B. Derrek Lee
3B. Aramis Ramirez
LF. Alfonso Soriano
RF. Kosuke Fukudome
C. Geovany Soto
CF. Felix Pie
If Pie starts to hit and Soto contiunes to play at even 80% of how he did at the end of last year then this lineup will be as deadly as any outside of NY or Detroit.
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 10:28 PM
I've got a Chunichi Dragons Fukudome jersey for sale. It's the real deal I bought earlier this year from Yakyushop.com. I'm a Cards/Liverpool fan, so I can't be seen wearing it in public ever again, although I did get asked to leave from Busch this year twice with it on. If you want it, I'll be putting it up on the Ebay soon. HAHAHAHA! No seriously, good job Cubbies and I think he should be the number 5 hitter. It just makes mathematical sense.
Posted by: johndakar | December 11, 2007 at 10:28 PM
Pads fans, do you think there's any combo of Murton/Pie and a prospect or two that would pry Chris Young away? Maybe throw Prior in?
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:32 PM
Excellent News.
Posted by: Tommy Callahan III | December 11, 2007 at 10:32 PM

I know. Just had to ask.

Tommy Callahan III....you big Tom Callahan's son? Good luck with those brake pads.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 10:36 PM
Maybe Pie and Murton and Prior and Patterson and Cedeno and Soto? I know, I know, shut up already.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:37 PM
Don't bad mouth The Riot or else he'll haunt you in your dreams. 75%+ on stolen bases, plays much better D than he is given credit for plus he walks and does not K too much. Keep him at short and F Tejada. Let Lou use DeRosa as a super-sub like he did Mark McLemore in Seattle (coincidence his name is Mark?anybody? anybody?).
P.S. I AM Abe Frohman, the suasage king of Chicago.
Posted by: itchycub9er | December 11, 2007 at 10:37 PM
This is awesome!!!
Posted by: TrueCubsFan | December 11, 2007 at 10:37 PM
Cubs fans better hope he is more like Ichiro than he is Kotsay.
Agree that since money is growing on trees it isn't a bad signing. I'm just really hesitant with Japanese players. It's real hit and miss. When you are paying a guy $12m/year you can't afford to miss much.
And can someone please tell me the wisdom of batting your best RBI guy (and one of your worst OBP guys) leadoff. You need a high OBP leadoff hitter. Let Soriano hit 3rd and enjoy the show.
Posted by: bjsguess | December 11, 2007 at 10:37 PM
Seriously Nancy...did you want to trade Prior after 03? Enough said.
By the way, priceless Teetz.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:40 PM
I already know what's going to happen. Soriano will bat in the middle of the order the 1st month of the season and he'll struggle....because it's 20 degrees at Wrigley in April with the wind blowing in everyday. This will be attributed to Soriano not being 'comfortable' nor 'clutch'. I can see Mariotti, Rogers, and Morrissey typing their idiotic thoughts into articles already. Then, Soriano will got back to leadoff right around month 2 when he starts mashing and everyone will say...I told ya so!
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 10:40 PM
""Typepad sucks. They called this post spam."

too funny. I would have said something of the sort but no need to now. No need to beat the dead horse.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 11, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Me and Theriot train with the same hitting coach and the guy is nice as heck but I just don't think he is anything better than a utility player, sorry.
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Whats the over under on Fukudome's OBP? .370? .365?
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:42 PM
I think the 'healthy Kotsay' comparisons are more attributed to his great defense. Peter Gammons always slobbed Kotsay's knob when it came to his defense.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 10:44 PM
From Theriot's wikipedia page:
"He is sometimes referred to by Cubs fans and broadcasters as "The Riot" as a play on the spelling of his last name.[1] Theriot and teammate Fontenot, who are both Louisiana natives, are sometimes called the "Bayou Boys" or "Bayou Basher" by Cubs' announcers. Ryan "The-Riot" Theriot has made a very good impression's on fans, based on his solid showing. Theriot is sometimes compared to Chuck Norris because scientists have discovered that both Theriot and Norris' tears are the cure to cancer, the problem is that neither one of them can cry."
I'm willing to be Theriot has counted to infinity, twice, as well. Pretty good reasons to leave him at SS.
Posted by: itchycub9er | December 11, 2007 at 10:44 PM
"Oh, and Z is totally due for a breakdown, and I wouldn't be shocked if he's on that Mitchell Report too."
From Cubs.com
48 mil?? NICE work Hendry!
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:44 PM
Yeah you can save the beating for Arods schlong schmuck. I had a good time goading all the ignorants in the other thread. If there had been something important to discuss I would've. As it was it was easy fishing for my sarcastic taunts. Tough sh1t if you don't appreciate them. If you care to pick a fight you've found one.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:44 PM
sorry...wrong quote. Cubs.com says its 4 years and 48 mil though...
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:45 PM
Teetz seriously you hit that spot on, it's such crap, just make Soriano hit 5th, you don't know how healthy his legs will be anyway and hitting 5th is much easier on your legs than lead off. Come on Alfonso just bat 5th, you know you only like lead off because you want to be the first thing the fans see every game, but fyi the fans would enjoy seeing you much more if you had 35+ hr and 100 RBI, than 35+ HR and 60 RBI...
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 10:45 PM
i love the Chris Young trade scenario. Wonder how him and DLee would get along! We should bring Barret back too...Lots of excitement!
Posted by: icantbelieveitsnotbittner | December 11, 2007 at 10:46 PM
Hell, I'll throw Lee in that scenario to avoid conflict and get the deal done.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Teetz, I have to say thanks for all of your input into this site... it makes this Cubbies fan crack up out here in SoCali.
I think this is such great news for the Cubbies... I'm not too confident that Fuku is the answer to our dreams (aka is Dempster REALLY going to be a starter for us next season??? Geez... better run to Costco for an ample supply of Pepcid! I think we're headed in the right direction. I know people might think I'm crazy, but what's the consensus on going after both Roberts (Murton, Cedeno, and Patterson ) AND Figgins (DeRosa - 3B, Marshall, and Fuld)... Dreamin' about givin' Lou speed I guess. Happy Festivus everyone!
Posted by: socalicubsfan | December 11, 2007 at 10:48 PM
Aduncaroo,
As for Fukudome's career OBP...you have google, so try using it. In less than 10 seconds i found this:
http://thebaseballcube.com/players/F/Kosuke-Fukudome.shtml
His career OBP is 0.388, mostly driven by his 0.302 AVE and his career BB/K = 409/691
Posted by: itchycub9er | December 11, 2007 at 10:49 PM
lol the one reason I hope Theriot develops into a good ML SS is that his legend status potential is pretty high, he will become an internet hero if the Cubs win the WS and he is the starting SS.
Posted by: CubsFan1654 | December 11, 2007 at 10:49 PM
So lets move on to what it will take to get Roberts...my guess?
Marshall, Colvin, and Patterson.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:50 PM
FUKUDOME t-shirt...available now at RIOTSHIRTS.COM!!!
Posted by: tipsy mcstagger | December 11, 2007 at 10:52 PM
itchycub9er,
I know what it is, I'm wondering on what the over under is on what people think he will hit in his first year here....
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:52 PM
If the Orioles are intent on getting rid of Tejada, Cedeno may make more sense than Colvin and I would do that deal in a heartbeat.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:52 PM
Honestly, I would trade Colvin this offseason. His pro career is very very young, but he's coming from college and has 32 walks in 757 minor league at bats. It's like when he gets into 3 ball counts he begins to sneeze violently like he's allergic to walks. Trade him now if his stock is really that high.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 10:54 PM
We can save Colvin for the Figgins deal, hehe.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 10:56 PM
I can't wait for the Cubs to play the Mets this season. While I'm a big fan of color man Keith Hernandez, I just KNOW that he's gonna mess this guy's name up and accidentally turn it into profanity...
Posted by: Dalkowski110 | December 11, 2007 at 10:57 PM
Figgins will NOT be worth what they will ask for him. Dude, just give it up with him and Bedard...its just not happening.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 10:58 PM
and the cubs will still suck....because that's what they do...suck.
Posted by: Darin | December 11, 2007 at 11:03 PM
It probably won't with the Fuk signing but you never know. Hendry has every reason to go ballz out here so don't be so sure that that which may have seem impossible to fathom two offseasons ago might not be much more likely this season. Chris Young? No. But Bedard or Tejada or Figgins? Who knows? It's fun to fantasize about it anyway.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 11:05 PM
i believe the O's will be looking for Gallagher, Jose Ceda, and Vitters for Roberts. Then will move Bedard for more young pitching and position players rated higher than the what the Cubs have. If they move Tejada, Bedard, and roberts, won't they be looking to be competitive a little further down the road than the next year or two?
Posted by: icantbelieveitsnotbittner | December 11, 2007 at 11:05 PM
good one darin..you going to be here all week? Seriously, I love the 5 year olds that come in (Cards\Sox\and other jealous fans) and say something stupid and jet. They contribute nothing to the thread, which probably mirrors what they contribute in life.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 11, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Vitters can't be traded yet.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Great post Darin! Insightful, well thought out.
Does anybody know the latest on Prior?
Posted by: cubz23 | December 11, 2007 at 11:06 PM
2B Roberts
RF Figgins
1B Lee
3B Ramirez
LF Soriano
CF Fukudome
C Soto
SS Theriot
A Festivus Dream come true!
Posted by: socalicubsfan | December 11, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Darin, that is quite a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out argument. Keep up the good work big guy.

Darin, go Fukudome yourself.
Posted by: Teetz | December 11, 2007 at 11:08 PM

Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | December 11, 2007 at 11:09 PM

i wouldn't want to give up vitters either, but that may be what the O's are asking since roberts is such a favorite of Angelos. vitters could be traded as the "player to be named later"
above is all total speculation on my part...think i'll let it alone and just enjoy the fact that the cubs signed fukudome
