« Dodgers In Lead For Hiroki Kuroda? | Main | Today's Non-tenders: Towers, Prior, Everett, Durbin »
Quick note from Geoff Baker - the Mariners sent first baseman Ben Broussard to the Rangers for minor league infielder Tug Hulett. Makes sense; the Mariners clear $3.5MM+ from the payroll and actually get something in return. The Rangers get a cheap stopgap first baseman who won't embarrass them.
We may never hear from Hulett again, but he's better than the nothing the Mariners would've gotten for non-tendering Broussard.
The Rangers also non-tendered Akinori Otsuka. Last we'd heard he was throwing pain-free in October, but maybe the Rangers learned he needed Tommy John after all. (Hat tip to Rangerfans.com).

I thought Saltalamacchia was playing first with Laird catching

kudos to the M's for sending Big Ben home when he'd have little playing time in seattle (despite being more talented than some of their starters).

No. Saltamacchia is catching. Unknown what will happen with Laird, but it was announced that Salty was going to be the primary catcher in 08.
In addition, the Rangers DFA'ed Nick Gorneault to make room for Broussard.

Broussard is going to put up good numbers in Arlington.
Just a salary dump from the Mariners. Glad to see Bavasi is on the ball making this team better. Good grief.

With Aki gone, who is left on the Rangers roster with any closing experience?

good move for both sides. the rangers get their primary 1st basemen who will platoon with chris shelton. the mariners get a decent prospect instead of getting nothing.
on the aki side, its a sad story but he must need tommy john. plus the fact that he reccomended san diego to fukudome over texas probably didnt help. the rangers will now either let cj wilson continue to close or he will split time with benoit.
since the rangers have looked at prior and mcpherson before, i expect them to try and get both.

I wonder if Otsuka might now come to the Cubs.

I think the Rangers are going to turn to CJ Wilson for 9th inning duties.
