Now that Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez is out with a knee fracture, will Wayne Krivsky be on the lookout for a short-term replacement?
New manager Dusty Baker has shown a propensity to trust veteran fill-in middle infielders, so Jeff Keppinger may have an opportunity to play Lou Gehrig to Gonzalez's Wally Pipp if Krivsky doesn't dig up any help. Bet Keppinger's never been compared to Gehrig before, eh? Moving Brandon Phillips to shortstop will not be considered.
The free agent market offers next to nothing even as a short-term Gonzalez replacement. Unless...wait for it...Neifi!

How sad is it that Neifi was the first name that popped into my head as well. The comedy would be too much to bear.

I would be very suprised to see the reds bring in anyone new....Although Keppinger is def. a downgrade at SS compared to gonzalez...he is still capable with his .350+ B.A. last year (at this time anyways..and yes i know reds fans like to compare the stats diff. but theres no doubting that Gonzalez is the better defensive SS Fielding % doesnt tell half the story)

Ahh, the Neifi years...

I could see an Uribe trade. Then Uribe can share time with Keppinger. The Sox would probably need to throw in some salary though.

Neifi's available!!!

Would Uribe be a fit? What does their bench look like after A-Gon comes back?

This would be a good time for the Red Sox to put Lugo in a bassinet and leave him on Krivsky's doorstep.

Bobby Crosby and Joe Blanton for a Votto and a couple other prospects??
I know its not possible but its interesting to think about

Dear Reds Management,
Please consider Juan Uribe. He's a defensive (underrated) upgrade and has significant pop for the position. True, his OBP and BA leave much to be desired, but perhaps a change of scenery can help.
The added bonus: due to the surplus of infield talent in Chicago, you won't have to give up any major league talent or even one of your top 25 prospects. Throw in a couple of solid Single-A guys and let's consider this a done deal.

How about another Alex on the North Side.. I bet Alex Cintron could be had.
Cintron, E-Pat and Sean Marshall for Johnny Cueto. :-)

That was humor folks...
Posted by: Bleacher_Buddha | March 01, 2008 at 12:04 PM
It would be Cueto and a prospect.
Haa haaa... haaa... Oh crap.. its March first not April First.
Please strike comments from the record.

Better that Neifi replace an injured SS now, then replace Brendan Harris in May, which is what I figured Dusty would do. Gotta play them entitled veterans!

I sure hope this leads to a Juan Uribe trade.
I can see this going two different ways:
1) Reds pay all of Uribe's salary but only have to give up any old warm body in return.
2) Sox pay half of Uribe's salary, but the Reds have to give up a reasonably decent prospect in return.

Move Phillips to SS and trade for Ray Durham!
:)
You can just have him!

What about a return of Felipe Lopez to the Reds?
The Nationals have Christian Guzman and Ron Belliard so they can afford to move him in the last year of his contract
Posted by: jza1218 | March 01, 2008 at 02:36 PM
I wouldn't think of a Nationals trade, not with the still pending grievance.
The Reds are better off just sticking with Keppinger at SS because of his bat but if he isn't hitting well Castro can always be a defensive replacement.
And frankly if all of them go down Freel can play SS. Wayne Krivsky basically said they are not going to be moving Phillips to SS and honestly, it'd be dumb to do that.

Felipe Lopez for Gary Majewski!
Problem solved
Posted by: jza1218 | March 01, 2008 at 04:09 PM
the smart way to play out this one is to share the ss role equally with castro and keppinger because the both bring different tools to the table
