Boston Globe baseball writer Nick Cafardo's Sunday column has new hot stove material, as usual.
- Cafardo notes that Kyle Snyder, Julian Tavarez, and Bryan Corey have all been heavily scouted by other clubs. Snyder is out of options, so he's a good trade candidate. Cafardo mentioned on Thursday that the Orioles were taking a look at Corey, who might return to Japan if he doesn't join a big league 'pen. I imagine the Sox are going to want the insurance Tavarez provides.
- The Phils are hunting for a southpaw reliever and another starter. Brian Fuentes remains on their radar, but they're competing with the Tigers and Yankees for him.
- The Indians could make southpaws Jeremy Sowers and/or Aaron Laffey available, if Cliff Lee maintains his spring success. Cafardo says the Cardinals, Phillies, and Astros are eyeing them.

Fuentes = Lohse away from Coors, no rockie is any good at all
That was my best BSOX21 impression

What do you guys thing the chances of the Yanks getting Fuentes are? He seems like a good fit for them, but I'm not sure how serious the Rockies are about losing him and how much the Yanks would have to give up.
Posted by: jlemoine | March 17, 2008 at 10:21 AM
i think it all depends on how much the Yanks will trade for fuentes
Posted by: Larsen101 | March 17, 2008 at 10:48 AM
i think the yankees and tigers could use fuentes but i dont see what the rockies r looking for. i dont see them as a team with many needs besides 2nd and they have like 4 guys competing there. i know the cards just got lohse but either sowers or laffey or miller(wishful thinking?) would be great. reyes can go along with maybe schumaker. brian anderson could be had as well but we would need more. im guessing they dont want barton or gonzalez and we dont need to be trading ryan. chris duncan for good value would also work. reyes and duncan for both laffey and sowers. i could live with that.

Why would the Indians trade on of their young starters with Byrd gone next year and possibly Sabathia as well?

joel, I've heard the Indians discussed Reyes last winter, so he could be a viable trading chip, and Duncan clearly would benefit from being a DH.
That said, I'm just not convinced that Laffey or Sowers are great acquisitions. If the Cardinals are rebuilding (as might seem the case, though it's hard to tell exactly), then they need to clear the clutter (Mulder, Clement, Lohse, Piniero) in order to give younger hurlers a chance. And it seems to me I've heard that the organization has some hurlers of their own in the pipeline as well. Unless they're willing to commit to youth fully (and take their lumps), acquiring two young hurlers with no place to put them seems a waste.
On the other hand, you can never have enough pitching.

well as far as this years rotation goes it would definitely be messy. the reason i would like to see them do a trade like that is because clement, mulder, looper, and lohse are all free agents after this year. i have seen our young options and besides perez im not impressed, and perez is a closer. i completely agree that for this year it wouldnt help much, eventhough losing reyes and duncan wouldnt hurt a lot either. i would like to see them do that trade and then trade a couple starters at the deadline once people start getting healthy or if someone pitches well at aaa. it sounds stupid but im already thinking about 09. the cards r screwed this year.

Technically, don't Mulder and Clement have an option attached to their contracts?
Obviously, that means they'll have to pitch well for it to be picked up.
I don't think it's stupid at all to be looking forward to '09; in many respects, the team itself should be doing so as well.

Well with Sowers and Laffey, i would expect Cleveland to be looking for another OF. With that being siad it brings back the usual suspects of Byrd and Murton. Both teams could use the extra pitching with options remaining. Im not enntirely for sure the market value of Sowers and Laffey actually is though.

Where does this “Cleveland to be looking for another OF” stuff keep coming from? It seems like once a week someone is trying to figure out a way to get Matt Murton on the Tribe…
Sizemore is a lock in CF. Then, there are 5 players for 2 corner spots (Jason Michaels / David Dellucci / Franklin Gutierrez / Ben Francisco / Shin-Soo Choo (who is out of options) with of course DH & 1B taken by Garko and Hafner. Then there is always the possibility that Blake spends quite a bit of time in RF with Andy Marte getting starts at 3B for the big club…Because of the above, FrankieG will probably have to be in AAA, creating a over-full OF in the upper minors (Buffalo & Akron) with Nathan Panther, Ryan Goleski, Brad Snyder, Trevor Crowe, Jason Cooper and Veteran Jason Tyner who was singed to a MiL deal, while Ryan Mullhern and Michael Aubrey hold down the two 1B positions. The Indians lost Matt Whitney and Brian Barton in the Rule-V draft for a reason, its hard to fit so many guys for so few positions on a 40-Man roster…
The last thing the Indians need is OFers, they have too many in the organization already ~ guys with more service time left and higher upsides as well… Byrd and Murton would never sniff playing time, and neither would be traded for by the Tribe… The only way Cleveland gets another OFer is if that OFer is a real difference maker. Jason Bay was rumored, and that’s the type of OFer they will bring in if they ever traded for one.
Both Sowers and Laffey wont be traded, and its probably unlikely either is dealt. But if one is moved, it will be in a package for a difference making bat for corner OF or 3B. The team doesn’t have holes though, so the team is not going to trade prospects with ML success for roster-filler types…

darkstar the indians have lots of outfielders, just crappy ones. michaels is ok but i definitely dont like the rest. they can have chris duncan and reyes for laffey and sowers. they get dh/outfielder and sucky pitcher, cards get two pitchers. maybe one works out. and devish im already thinking those options arent getting picked up. both r very pricey and i guess its possible, i just dont think so. also, eventhough the cards wont actually say it, they are looking towards 09. when over 20% of team salary is hurt u almost have to. we need carp back.
