Giants are probably begging other teams to take their veterans off their hands. "I'll pay Ray Durham's entire salary and give you some additional cash on top of that for a mediocre prospect."

Hey!!! where did the Bonds to Braves rumor go? I had a great comment for that one.... well in my opinion it was.
Here it is:
Wow! Wonder what Hank thinks about this. It could be a great PR stunt though. Give away Hank Hammers in the 1st inning and Barry Bobble heads in the 2nd inning. I can picture this on ESPN highlights, it might take the place of the tomahawk chop.
OK...delete away Tim...I wouldn't blame ya :)

Seriously I think Bonds needs to get clear of the feds before any top team like the Mariners give up a 1st rounder for him

If bailey is available what would the reds be looking to get back?
Posted by: thedeuce | March 17, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Dusty probably ran out of toothpicks, so he's going to trade for some. Seriously though, if they don't want him, can the sox have him? haha

When does Bonds lose his Type A status? Next offseason?
Posted by: stellar | March 17, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Writing up the Bonds/Braves thing was a really dumb mistake on my part...in context you can tell that Dave O'Brien was kidding about it.
Bonds wasn't offered arb from the Giants, there is no compensation pick.

If Giants kicked in some cash, some can be worth it..
Roberts + Giants kick in 2 mill...he is worth 4 mill this year and next.
Durham + Giants kick in 3 mill...same thing..Durham is worth 4 mill.
Winn ...Giants should keep.
Kline should be DFA'd

the cardinals would be happy to have bailey. brian anderson and an outfielder for bailey. and toss in anthony reyes. i dont care about all this bad stuff i keep hearing about bailey. our large ballpark and dave duncan would do the trick. speaking of duncan, chris for bailey. and toss in reyese. tell u what even if the trade doesnt go down, just toss in reyes.

I think Beane should trade Rich Harden for Bailey and some infield prospect.
That would be awesome if they pulled that one off.
A's cut salary more, get a good pitching prospect, but most importantly gets rid of the uncertainty associated with a Rich Harden type.
And who knows, he could pitch a whole season and tear up the NL.
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 17, 2008 at 11:30 AM
Ps.
Hopefully Beane will get it into his head that he could use the extra money to sign Ellis long term.
There not getting O-dog next year, so why not re-sign ellis ?? They don't have anyone else who can take over for him.

As a Reds fan, you guys really shouldn't want Bailey. Guys a head case at this point. And we probly don't want to trade him right now anyway. Guy can't have that much value. But we have 4 of our rotation spots pretty much locked down for the next three years, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see him eventually get dealt.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | March 17, 2008 at 12:08 PM
As a Reds fan I'm ok with giving up Bailey. A good bit of fans I've heard from have soiled on him. We'd be ok with the Reds giving up Bailey, Freel, and Coffey for Blanton.

He should have a decent year with the Reds. Dusty won't get in his way or discipline him at all though.

Tim, would you *please* make a post with OVERSIZED FONT stating very clearly that the team signing Bonds will not lose any draft picks because Bonds was NOT offered arb by the Giants.
I'm getting tired of seeing the comments constantly filled with that assumption and the need to correct it within the comments boxes.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the confusion, but let's get this cleared up ONCE AND FOR ALL!

I would love to add Bailey to the Angels. Let him play in AAA this year and get his head put back on straight.
We have plenty of outfielders to choose from as well as Morales. That would buy you some nice options for when Griffey/Dunn move on.
Posted by: bjsguess | March 17, 2008 at 02:00 PM
my guess is even if the Reds were willing to trade baily....they would trade him nothing but for pitching....least of all another OF, afterall we did trade Hamilton for a Pitcher...the reds have a logjam in their OF, and even if both Dunn and Griffey leave...they have the top prospect in the game to take griff's spot....I just dont see them trading what is still considered a top 10 Prospect for anything but pitching.....

"A good bit of fans I've heard from have soiled on him."
I'm sure you meant "soured" but "soiled" paints a much more vivid (and fragrant) picture.
INOK, I loved your giveaway idea.

If anything is to be learned from the Bailey talk, it's buyer beware.
Teams have been in a hurry to dump headcase players of late, with Delmon Young, Dukes, and Milledge the tip of the iceberg.
I'm sure Bailey has considerable value now, but if the Reds don't think he'll apply it, now is the time to move him. Wait until he's struggled a couple years in a row and is approaching arbitration and they'll have waited too long. Target a position of need (near ML ready catcher?) and start talks.
Clement, Anderson (Stl), Hundley (SD), Teagarden/Saltalmacchia, Jaso (TB), etc.
Some guys are indeed "uncoachable" and while I wont' label Bailey that, the Reds have a good idea one way or the other. Given the emergence of Volquez and Cueto, it might be worth consideration.
Posted by: Devlsh | March 17, 2008 at 06:36 PM
The reds fans will see the light when josh fogg and affeldt have over five eras a quarter way into the season. I can't imagine cueto, bailey and volquez would be worse then belisle, affeldt and fogg. At least they would be young and exciting.
Posted by: joemorgan=#1 | March 17, 2008 at 06:46 PM
haha. if the fans or soiling on him he definitely has to go.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 17, 2008 at 07:16 PM
Affeldt was given the word he will be in the bullpen which he pitched very well in last year. Cueto and Volquez have looked nasty this spring, and against some great lineups. Bailey has struggled, but unless we get a close to ML ready catcher, which we really need, then I say keep him and put him in long relief or send him back to AAA

brian anderson and reyes for bailey. done deal. anderson started at catcher in the futures game. good prospect. we have molina. dont need him. ill run it by mozeliak and let u know tomorrow.

If Teagarden is completely healthy (and I'd be inclined to watch him play a half season before making that leap), he might be the best fit. He's blocked by Saltalamacchia but is a top prospect. He hit 27 HRs last season, much of it as a DH because of elbow issues, but he's probably no more than a year away at most if healthy.
Bailey is a Texas product and we all know the Rangers need pitching. It's the kind of deal that makes a world of sense. Teagarden is a middle of the order hitter and would soften the blow of Dunn leaving considerably.
Posted by: Devlsh | March 17, 2008 at 10:45 PM
So then would it be something like Teagarden, Main and Harrison for Bailey? I know Main can't be moved til July but its not like this deal would happen tomorrow anyways. That may be a little much if Main turns out to be a genuine top prospect, but for the #9 prospect in the game (according to BA and BP) its not out of the question.
Posted by: scribbletone | March 18, 2008 at 12:11 AM
I think that is too much, especially for a hurler who is getting press as being hard to coach. And frankly, it makes a lot less sense for Texas if they're giving back two pitchers for another pitcher who may have issues.
Still, I bet the two teams could make it work. The Reds seem willing to part with Bailey if the rumors are true and the Rangers have a glut at a premium position. A little give and take (Teagarden and SS Joaqin Arias?)and both teams are likely to come out ahead. Like I said earlier, if I were Cincy I'd want to see Teagarden catch for a half season but if he appeared sound, I'd go for it. That lineup could be scary good in '09 with Phillips, Encarnacion, Votto, Bruce, Griffey, Teagarden...all of them young...and a potential rotation of Harang, Arroyo, Cueto and Volquez. Mmmm-mmmmm.

Bailey for Saltalamachia?
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | March 18, 2008 at 07:34 AM
I would hate to see Bailey go but it makes much sense to me. I haven't heard much about his personal issues but if he really is a hot-head like a Lastings Milledge or Milton Bradley, he can go especially with the way he has been pitching this spring. Our rotation is set to start off the year. If we traded Baily today, I would like to see a decent starter come back as well as a Teagarden, Salmamamamtchiaiaaiaia and Arias in case someone in the rotation gets hurt.
