12:24pm: J.P. Ricciardi is optimistic the Rios extension will get done, and the two sides are pushing their deadline back a few days.
8:17am: According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the holdup in the Alex Rios negotiations is the amount of money for the option year. It might be the salary or the buyout amount. Sounds like a minor stumbling block before completing the six-year, $65MM pact.
J.P. Ricciardi is cautiously optimistic; the Jays kick off their season in less than four hours. That is supposedly the deadline, but stretching it another day or two doesn't seem like a big deal. The Jays are getting a solid price relative to other recently signed right fielders.

Hopefully they'll work it out and keep Wells and Rios together for the next few. Im sure it will make Wells feel better out there having his buddy locked in.
Just watched some of Gil Meche against the tigers, and man, i wish he signed with the Jays last year.
Having him as the Jays #3 guy would have been sick, and then follow it up with the M&M boys, with Litsch in the background for depth: all i can is Crazy !

The Jays have to get this deal done, because right now it looks like their getting a huge bargain. On the open market, Rios would command at least the same 6/100 contract that Carlos Lee got, and potentially more considering his fantastic defense and the fact that he still has a great deal of offensive potential. This guy is a stud and if the Jays can lock him up after locking up Wells, then their outfield is set with either Lind or Snider in left. If Lind proves to be a good LF then Snider moves to first and the lineup becomes incredibly daunting.

Adam Lind and Travis Snider will BOTH become big, big, BIG bats in Toronto's lineup, and Aaron Hill is only going to get better, too.
Will be interesting to see how much this deal really ignites Rios, who really has only scratched the surface of what he's capable of offensively.

Ricciardi spends Ted Rogers' money like a drunken sailor. The biggest claim to fame for Alex Rios is a good performance in an all-star home run derby last year in S.F. -- Too bad he can't do it in the real games, too bad he can't do it in the clutch.
Over 700 plate appearances last year with 85 RBIs....Yes, 85 RBIs
Toronto would be much netter served keeping Rios year-to-year, then harvest 2 first-round picks after some other sucker gives that toad a multi million dollar deal.
But this apparently will be the Jays's fate - Millions and millions spent to watch Rios and Wells gain weight, get chubby, produce little to nothing, and smothering the club in unproductive salary.........Why don't they offer Frank Thomas a 5 year extension too?
What a fraud and a farce. How can a team pay unproductive hitters so much and still hope to compete?

Jim T,
Do you know who Alex Rios is?
I don't think you do, go look him up on google. Also don't makes stupid comments about Rios. He is an amazing player, he has power, speed and he is a good fielder. How is Rios an unproductive hitter? He hit .297, 24hrs, 85 RBI. Those are respectable stats. So Jim T the next time you post, please post something that makes sense, we don't need bullplop comments like that.

Hey Jays Believer, are you Alex Rios' agent? LoL
Yes I know who he is = I watched the game tonight. He came up empty again tonight.
Where is the ring? the world series ring? Alex Rios doesn't have one. He's never played in a world series. He's never played in an ALCS. He's never even been to the playoffs. Why throw millions at him when his resume is berift of accomplishments? It's about winning jays believer !
You know what I read about Alex Rios this spring? Not that he played racquet ball all winter to improve his hand-eye coordination? No, that didn't happen. Or that he showed up in camp 10 pounds thinner but 10 percent stronger? No, that didn't happen. what did happen is that he had two remote controlled helicopters delivered to Dunedin to play with. That's the buzz on Rios

Jim T,
Yeah I'm Alex Rios' agent, your so funny Jim T. It's the first game of the season and you're already saying he is crap? I hope you know that the baseball season is 162 games not just a couple. So don't judge Rios so harshly after the first game. As for the resume, have you heard of Nolan Ryan? He NEVER won a Cy Young Award and he only has one world series ring. Just because someone doesn't have a resume full of awards etc. it doesn't mean they're crap unless you want to say that Nolan Ryan is crap. Jim T I hope that was your last bullplop comment because it's really irritating to read your comments.
