The Mets are currently considering Orlando Hernandez, Mike Pelfrey, and Jorge Sosa for their fifth starter job. A little more depth wouldn't hurt. According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, Omar Minaya said the Mets "will have a strong interest" in Claudio Vargas. Minaya once traded for Vargas as GM of the Expos.
My gut says Vargas could be solid with the Mets. His strikeout rate and control never seemed to match up with his ERA. If Rick Peterson could help him keep the ball in the yard, a low 4s ERA over 180 innings seems possible. There doesn't seem to be much downside to signing him.

I'd also have to think his lackluster defense on the Brewers didnt help matters

It would be a great move to sign Vargas. He would instantly become a successful product of a good pitcher's park/good defense/good pitching coach.

The Mets don't have alot of depth in the rotation so signing Vargas would be a great signing.

I think Vargas would make sense as well for a back of the rotation guy. He has shown to be solid in his brief career.

I didn't realize guys with 5.09 ERAs were considered solid these days. He should be a steal to anyone that doesn't have to pay him 3+ million.

I think this would be a great deal for the Mets. He's got a high ERA yes, but as has also been noted, his other stats don't match his high ERA. It would give Pelfrey a bit more time (though I wish it wasn't needed) and force Hernandez to either get better or get out.

From a Brewers fan, I was happy to see him go...but he does pitch well for 4 innings. Innings 1-3 he is great... inning 4 he allows a ton of baserunners..will usually walk 2 batters in that inning and give up a hit to load the bases with no outs and he would somehow get out of the inning only allowing a run to score...
5 inning he will then give up 4 runs...
He won a lot of games last year because of the Brewers offense..he was given over 6 runs a game in run support.
He has decent stuff and was a good 5th starter for the Brewers but now with Manny Parra and Carlos Villanueva, plus Gallardo coming back in 2 weeks the writing was on the wall.
He will give the Mets 4.5 era or so
I think some of the problems of the Brewers Pitching staff last year was Estrada not working with the pitchers, not studying the opposing team with his pitchers and calling a bad game...plus the Defense was not good.
I wish him luck as long as he goes to the Mets and not the Astros

He would be decent, moving to a Good Defensive Team in a Good Pitchers Ballpark should help his ERA a lot. I could live with that as a 5th Starter....potentially a long man if a better option presents itself during the season.
