« Nationals Release John Patterson | Main | Could Tigers Trade For An Atlanta Reliever? »
Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times couldn't get much commenting out of Kenny Williams or Orlando Cabrera regarding the state of contract extension talks. The Sox do want to sign their shortstop, who can become a free agent after the season. Cabrera doesn't mind letting talks carry into the season.
I imagine Cabrera wants something in the neighborhood of three years and $24MM. PECOTA would give a little more than half that amount; Cabrera is already 33.
Next year's free agent market has perhaps three viable shortstop options aside from Cabrera: David Eckstein, Adam Everett, and Rafael Furcal. Cristian Guzman could become one with a nice year. Furcal is obviously the cream of the crop; it might make sense for the Cubs to renew their interest.

I realize it PROBABLY won't happen, but I'd love to see the Yanks sign Furcal (& CC), move Jeter to LF, and dump Damon.

Meh. If the Sox can re-sign him, they better not over pay him. If not, I don't think it will be a big deal. Alexei Ramirez seems to be the real deal, and his natural position is SS. If Cabrera is too expensive, then let him go and look for a 2B.

Alexei Ramirez seems to be the real deal? C'Mahn....he's had like 25 at bats in Spring Training.

And everyone who that comments on him says he can hit in the Majors. Sure he can get to the regular season and fall on his face, but when people who spend their life around baseball watch him play and say he can hit, I tend to believe them. No one is ever 100% without a doubt right, but most people are saying the guy can play at the major league level.

I love the Furcal idea. The Cubs could lead him off awsuming we don't get Roberts. We could have Theriot and DeRosa playing at second base and moving around the field. We have to wait untill after the season, and Roberts is better, but Furcal will only take money. Roberts will take our top 3 pitching prospects and money. Because of this added leverage, we could tell McPhail to finally make the Roberts trade or keep him. If they keep Roberts, the Cubs can get Furcal.

Cubs, Cubs, Cubs, Cubs, Cubs
Bleh. Enough! Tim has every quality player that comes up fitting a Cubs need heading to Chicago. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Hendry expressed some interest, but what does that entail. You could say that about any team just doing their due dilligence and checking it. I dunno...
BTW, Joe- What leverage? Saying you're interested in Furcal does NOT entail leverage, dude. And what are you 'adding' this imaginary leverage to? The only leverage the Cubs have in terms of the proposed Roberts deal, is the leverage that comes with being able to say NO. That's it. The O's hold the cards here. They've got the player that the Cubs want. Thinking otherwise is to ignore facts. I'm not saying that this means Baltimore is going to pillage the Cubs' farm system or anything. The Cubs still have right of refusal. Nevertheless, it's important to know 'who's holding the hammer'...and having interest in Furcal a year from now isn't going to change that (though it's something to shoot for if the Roberts deal falls through).

I personally like the idea of signing O-Cab for another three no matter what it takes
Im sure Kenny Williams will not through a bunc of money at Furcal seeing that Boston could be in the race for him.
i like alexei ramirez as the sox 2nd basemen for the next 3 years, they are comparing him to Alfonso Soriano (maybe a switch to lf in 3 years after swisher is gone?)

I never heard any comparisons to Soriano. Those would be a little far fetched I think. He has barely over played 2B. The only reason he has not been named Opening Day starter is because of that. He has only started 3 games there this spring. Depending on the market next year, and how this year goes, right now I am inclined to let Cabrera walk and slide Ramirez to his natural position at SS. find someone else for 2B. Maybe Richar from within?
I just think the White Sox have enough to fall back on if they don't have the cash to sign Cabrera to an extension. He is past his prime, and will most likely hit closer to his career average .321 OBP instead of his near career high of .345 last year (just above league average).
He also had career highs in AB, which led to career highs in hits, and runs. Overall he is an average to below average contact hitter with below average power.

Alexei's started 10 games this spring, and Greg Walker and Ozzie both said he reminds them of soriano.

If they are talking extension, then I imagine OC would want a 3YR add-on pack. If he went to FA after 08, then he would probably get 3 year deal afterall ~ but that means the Sox would have to commit to 4 years from today. Do the Sox really want to pay him that much for the next 4 years? I would think the Sox are probably thinking 2 Year extension (from 09-2010), but Cabrera has to realize his age makes this deal probably his last longterm. I imagine the two side don’t get it done unless the Sox agree to 3YR (09-2011) or more money then they should pay over 09-2010 ~ otherwise OC would probably be better off playing 08 and getting a big 3YR deal after the season…

I think that the White Sox should extend Cabrera because,Who else would play short stop? Maybe, Uribe but, who is better? Cabrera or Uribe?
We all know that Cabrera is the better player. If Cabrera is resonible we should extend if he is not he will take the long way home!
