What's up with Barry Bonds? Not a whole lot. The New York Times' Jack Curry dug up what he could by talking to a few associates of Bonds. Curry found that Bonds is working out at home and staying in shape, but not hitting. Curry is on board with the speculation that an opportunity for Bonds might open up if a DH on a contender goes down.
This morning, David Chalk made a case for the Rays to sign Bonds. He can't find a reason why they shouldn't.

Hmm...if his best option is at DH...why isn't he spending any time hitting??

Huh, so this clown can't think of a reason for the Rays not to sign Bonds? Well, how about not wanting to introduce their young players to the KING OF PEDS. Or, how about not wanting to introduce their young players to the churl that is Barry Bonds? Or, how about realizing that the longer that he's off PEDs the greater his statiscal fall will be.
Just a thought.

Or how about Bonds is a hitting machine, on PEDs or not, and could easily put the Rays over the top in the AL East. They can definitely compete with the Yanks and Sox right now. Pena, Bonds, and a player like Gomes is an extremely powerful line-up. At that point, Crawford and Upton are just icing.

Isn't Tampa Bay trying to stay away from negative personality types?
Isn't that why they traded away players like Duke to the Nationals?

Call me skeptical but I don't Bonds is going to take the Rays from a sub 500 club to the AL East leader.
No doubt he represents an upgrade over their current players. However, there is no reason to assume that he will be a difference maker.

Man the way the Jays are looking, if they just had one more great bat they might be for real contenders. Another complete game by Halladay with 1 run scored on offense....too bad it's not gonna happen.

I think the Rays will be in the running WITHOUT Bonds in the lineup. If you add him, and he plays as well as last year, he could put them over the top. The Yanks and Sox aren't as strong as every one of their homer fans likes to think.

The Rays are not a now team, but will be one next year.Contrary to some hype men,the Rays aren't ready to compete with the best yet.The Jays on the other hand are a now team and a big OBP/ hitting monster like Bonds would put them over the top.Bonds could make them AL East winners with that pitching. The Jays need that offensive punch,NOW!
