Odds and Ends: Hatteberg, Colon, Longoria

And now for more Odds and Ends around the league:

  • In his latest "Full Count" audio piece at Fox Sports, Ken Rosenthal expects the Reds to do some roster shuffling that could come down to trades.  Scott Hatteberg has become "expendable" with the recent emergence of Joey Votto and by the fact that the Reds have too many lefty hitters.
  • Cork Gaines latest Baseball Blogs Weigh In delved into the Evan Longoria signing.  To add to that, Ken Rosenthal, also in his Full Count piece, notes favorably that Longoria has set himself for life without having to establish himself and that his payday will come at age 31, still in time for a 4-5 year deal.
  • The Boston Herald's reporting Bartolo Colon could opt to leave the Red Sox if he's not in the bigs by May 1st. Manager Terry Francona hopes he will "forego the decision for a while (most likely until May 15)."  With a recent setback being the reason he's not in the majors, I don't see him going anywhere just yet.
  • An amusing quote from columnist John Mehno of the Beaver County Times on whether the Pirates can be expected to lock up any of its young talent: "Given the lack of can’t-miss prospects in the system, Pirates rookies intent on becoming instant millionaires should probably keep buying lottery tickets."

First link just goes to Fox's mlb page, not a Rosenthal column. FYI.

The Reds also need to bring up Billy Bray for their bullpen ~ guy is tearing up AAA and could be the best arm they have in their pen…

ASM...the link goes to the page where the "full count" audio peice is available.

After Thomas' release today, the Jays could definitely use Hatteberg's LH bat. Jays have depth at C in the minors and also have relief arms they could part with. Either of those on the Reds' radar?

Catcher is a huge need for the reds

So, I certainly don't want to re-open the stupid grammatical seminar we had earlier, and I don't mean to nit-pick, I just wanted to point out you have an extra 'r' in Hatteburg in the title.

On topic, instead of Howard to the A's, how about Hatteburg? They can have a Moneyball reunion!

Is Curtis Thigpen still capable of playing a decent catcher?

I could definately see some sort of Scott Hatteberg and a low level prospect in exchange for Thigpen. The Reds hope that Thigpen or Devin Mesoraco can develop into their catcher of the future, and Votto takes over at first full time.

yes he can scribble

scribble, thigpen was splitting time with robinson diaz as the aaa jays' catcher, but he is an athletic guy and has shown the ability to play numerous positions, brandon ingish. we didn't really see enough of him behind the plate last year to really comment, but from what i saw, there's something there.

on a side note, i think you are a cubs fan. how you guys enjoying reed? i miss his socks.

The one problem I have then with the Jays moving Thigpen is that they really have no long term catching either. At least at the MLB level they dont. Zaun and Barajas is decent for a year at a time but really can't be depended on for much more than mediocrity.

And as a Cubs fan, I think that Reed has been great. He's shown an ability to get on base and be an effective centerfielder. In fact he's been playing so well that I'm almost concerned, because with Pie struggling again I'm really worried that this year is gonna be just like last year. Pie has gotta get some major at bats but if Johnson is holding an .800+ OPS in center then he's gonna keep taking away time from Felix.

Robinson Diaz, the catcher called up today, was hitting .338/.358/.431 in AAA, and probably has passed Thigpen as next in line to take over from Zaun. He has shown a good eye at each level in the minors, something the Jays value very much. Also, JP Arencibia was one of the Jays 1st round picks in the last draft. They also took a Toronto kid named Joel Collins who mashed it up post-draft in the Gulf Coast League.
