According to Scott Lauber, the Phillies signed veteran lefty Steve Kline to a minor league deal. Kline had been released by the Giants. The Phils recently added Rudy Seanez to their bullpen as well. Might as well stock up and hope that a few guys work out.
Kline, 35, had a career low strikeout rate in '07. Lefties hit .318/.375/.365 off him. Kline is known for his colorful personality.

Kline's "colorful personality" should fit well in the city of brotherly love.

Bryan Corey will be DFA'ed tomorrow by the Red Sox.
Expect several teams to show interest including the Tigers.

Boy I bet Phillies fan is ecstatic with the moves their front office is making - picking up Seanez and Kline shows a true commitment to winning....wow....

As a Braves fan I'm proud of the Phillies for their strong commitments to late inning batting practice.

Not exciting moves...Kline appears done, but Seanez actually appears to have something left. Thanks for participating in this thread braves fan, but your team stinks haha

Yeah, just like picking up JC Romero last year was a bonehead move. Oh wait, he helped them into the playoffs. Steve Kline has been around and has been in big games before. Maybe he is done, or maybe he will be a great loogy this year. How people criticize low risk moves like this is beyond me. Especially Braves and Dbacks fans with big bullpen issues.

I agree with nrmax88. It's a low-risk, low-cost move. If it doesn't work out, the Phillies can just drop Seanez or Kline. If it does work out, they've scored themselves a bargain.
A change of scenery could help revive either one, and a mere average output would make them worth it, really. As well, veteran savy is never a bad thing in a reliever.

Let me qualify that with this-- I think there are 3 spots on a team where taking a flyer on *questionable*, cheap veteran talent should be accepted as a good strategy with not a whole lotta downside (as I said, they can just drop a cheap contract):
Backup catcher
Pinch hitter specialist
Relief pitcher

Am I the only one who thinks the Phillies have a pretty solid 'pen. They have Lidge for the 9th, Gordon for the 8th, Madson for the 7th, and Romero as a lefty speciallist.

to be honest with you i think their pen has pitch really well with the exception of one inning by gordon, gillick best moves since becoming gm have been his small moves like this

No downside here. How's ATL's pen looking there kses? This guy's talking trash with Blaine Bowyer and Acosta at the back of his pen
