« Mailbag Questions? | Main | Frank Thomas Signs With A's »
At 7-15, the Rangers have the worst record in the American League. Team president Nolan Ryan doesn't seem ready for a fire sale yet, but you have to figure the Rangers will be clear sellers come June.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently suggested Kevin Millwood, Vicente Padilla, Hank Blalock, Frank Catalanotto, and Milton Bradley as trade candidates. As Sherman says, Millwood could be a hot commodity. He looks healthy and would certainly help a contender. Gerald Laird, Marlon Byrd, Jamey Wright, and Joaquin Benoit could also be dealt.
The Rangers already have the fourth-best farm system in baseball according to Baseball America; Jon Daniels' team could climb even higher with another bountiful July.

Why wouldn't they move Michael Young? I know, "he's the face of the franchise" argument but seriously.

Who would possibly trade for Michael Young when he's owed $16 million a year for his age 32-36 seasons?
Posted by: Trebor | April 24, 2008 at 11:20 AM
As a Padres fan, I'm glad we're off to a slow start. It'll force Kevin Towers to make some big moves. How about starting by putting Milton Bradley back in LF in exchange for Paul McAnulty & Justin Huber?

Depending on what they can get they might have a very good future. They might want to move Kinsler to the OF and Young back to 2B though.
But a core line up of Hamilton, Kinsler, Salty and Young isn't too bad.

They'd need to accept only a top prospect or two and would probably still need to throw in some money if the Rangers wanted to move Michael Young. And since the Rangers have an elite shortstop prospect in Elvis Andrus, who could possibly get a late call up in '09 and be ready for 2010 to take over as a starter in Texas, it doesn't make sense for the Rangers to hold onto Young.
I think they could do some godo dealings for Millwood and possibly Blalock as well if he can get hot, and I certainly think the Rangers can have the second best farm system in baseball next year (they just won't beat the Rays, since likely Price, Davis, McGee, Jennings, Brignac, Mason, Hellickson and Jaha will all maintain their prospect status, and they have the 1st pick the draft as well. So. The Rays will still win.)

Hank Blalock to thee Dodgers, please!
Posted by: LAD Lavigne | April 24, 2008 at 01:22 PM
It woulda been nice if Omar could have somehow gotten Millwood and Young in a package from Texas during the Winter. Young would look so much better batting second and playing second everyday then Castillo. Sigh.

Hank Blalock to the dodgers sounds about right. They can lock him up to block Laroche for even longer.
I am surprised that Millwood didnt get a lot more attention during the Winter, we heard about Blanton all winter, and heard almost nothing about teams interested in Millwood.

Blalock to the Dodgers does make a good deal of sense, but man, Michael Young (as a 2B) and Milwood to the Mets is brilliant. Too bad Milledge and Gomez already left town. What do the Amazin's have in the way of young talent to give back at this point?
The only problem with trading Young this year (or moving him to 2B, which needs to be done and soon) is there are no short-term fill-ins at SS. The SS market is pretty steep right now, and Andrus is not ready for at least another full year from now.

asm, the thing is the Mets have to wait like 6-8 more weeks and if some of their lower level talent from last year keeps producing in the minors then there may be a chance. Millwood and Young are both good players on a winning team, but not elite talent you have to gut the farm for. It doesnt seem like the Mets have much well known talent in their minors at all, but that doesnt mean there arent guys there that people may like. Guys like Pelfrey, Carp, Niese, Evans, Murphy, Owen, Pena, Parnell, Gee, Marte all may hold some sort of value 2 months from now. It depends how the Mets prospects progress, and if any of the unknown young latin american talent in the Met system starts to show any real value. A trade bringing in value like this would be very unlikely, but not completely out of the question imo.

Adam Dunn and Alex Gonzalez to the Rangers for Michael Young.
Dunn is originally from Houston and is going to want about $15 million a year and A Gon is an unneeded luxury for the Reds.
So, the Rangers get a Texas boy who can play Left Field and DH (something he can't do in Cincinnati) and a short term filler at SS until your Minor Leaguer is ready.
The Reds get Young, who could either play SS or be moved to LF and is a guy who can hit, which the Reds NEED.
Best of all, the salaries are close so neither team would have to put cash into the deal.

Blalock to the Dodgers would somehow presume that Colleti has the ability to make a good deal, which he doesn't.
I sometimes wonder if he isnt the worst GM in baseball.
After being surprised by Drew's departure, he overreacts and signs Pierre to one of the worst contracts in history. Then he signs Nomar to an equally miserable deal. His signing of Andruw Jones and Jason Schmidt add to his ineptitude.

nrmax88, sounds like you might know the answer to this question, because I'm curious: Is Angel Pagan actually any good? (And if he is, why is he being benched for Alou?) Because if not, they need to trade him now while his value is sky-high.
I wonder if Pelfrey/Pagan would do the trick for either (or both, with money coming from the Rangers) Milwood or Young. On the other hand, it's probably still way too early for the Rangers to "blow up" like that, even if everyone knows they're not going to compete this year. You normally wait til the deadline when teams are desperate, but I'm not sure the Mets could possibly need pitching more at any time this season than they do right now. If I was Jon Daniels I'd for sure be calling up Minaya and starting a conversation about Milwood. Particularly while Kevin himself is pitching very well.

asm, I think you just banged the nail on the head with Pagan about moving him NOW while they may be able to pawn him off as a legit CF before the league realizes he is a 4th outfielder.
Dont let them hear you talking about trading the superstar angel pagan around Metsblog though, they love him over there. I like him as a player and all, but he is really been on a lucky streak and has gotten some timely hits to a point where people start to think he is clutch, but really he is a 4th OF. He doesnt have much pop, his fielding is actually pretty bad, atleast in left (havent seen him in CF), but he makes up for it with good speed. He switch hits, which is nice, but he doesnt have good plate discipline, and doesnt have enough power to warrant starting in a corner. And despite his great speed, he only has 2 steals (both last night), despite being on base a lot. Once Alou gets back Pagan is useless, because Endy can do the job of 4th OF and late game replacement, and is a better fielder.
The people who tell you Pagan should remain the everyday LF are CRAZY. In my opinion, there is nobody on the DL in the NL that their respective team misses more then Alou. More then Rollins even, because without Alou, Delgado is protecting Beltran, and Beltran cant get a fastball to hit. So our 4/5 hitters are almost useless right now. Once Alou gets back into the lineup, Beltran starts seeing more fastballs, and also Delgado in the 6 or 7 spot gets more atbats with guys on with a now protected Beltran and Alou's steady 300 average, and he will see better pitches to hit. It really is a chain reaction.
Pelfrey is pitching pretty well so far, and he seems like a perfect type of pitcher for Texas because he throws a power sinker when he is right. He could be very effective in Texas keeping the ball on the ground. If Pelfrey, Pagan, Parnell and a one more prospect of Texas' choosing not named F-Mart along with taking all of the salary back from those 2 guys would get it done, I would pull the trigger in a second. Maybe they would have interest in Heilman. I would even eat Castillo's whole salary and throw him in as well. For the team that Omar built that is ready and almost has to win right now, it seems to make sense.
SS Reyes
2B Young
3B Wright
CF Beltran
LF Alou
RF Church
1B Delgado
C Schneider
Johan Santana
John Maine
Oliver Perez
Kevin Millwood
Nelson Figueroa and eventually Pedro Martinez
They might as well go for it, the system is gutted, might as well finish the job, go for it all, hope to hit a home run in the upcoming draft, and build it back up.
