« What's The Deal With Crede? | Main | D'Backs Acquire Jon Coutlangus »
The Red Sox and Dodgers made a deal last night. The Sox acquired 28 year-old righty pitcher Eric Hull for 23 year-old shortstop Christian Lara.
Lara was once Boston's top shortstop prospect, but he's been passed by Jed Lowrie and several others. A couple years ago Baseball America wrote that Lara had "a chance to be a plus defender." They weren't impressed with his bat. The Sox challenged him by putting him at Double A in 2005-06, but he was demoted to High A for '07.
Hull seems like an organizational arm, though he did intrigue last year with an 11.1 K/9 in Triple A as a reliever. Doesn't help that he's just 5'11" though. The Dodgers needed roster space and designated him for assignment on March 31st.

Seems like a nice deal to bolster the Pawtucket Pen. If he impresses he could be a call up.

In his call up last year, Hull actually showed some pretty good stuff, and he has a rather unorthodox delivery that could get batters in a tizzy. Control seemed to be his biggest issue. Still, he could easily interchange with some of the guys at the back of Boston's 'pen.
The Dodger end of the deal looks like a smart move. The Dodgers essentially have 1 1/2 back up infielders at the major league level because of injuries, with Hu and Young. Young plays second better than most think, but can't really play anything on the left side. Having someone else in the system allows a bit more flexibility.

Hull was a good grab for the Sox. I don't know much about Lara, so I won't talk about him...As far as calling Delwyn Young a backup infielder, that's a stretch. I've seen him play 2b and I've seen him play OF. For the sake of Dodgers fans, you better hope you don't need him as a long term defender any where.
I know he doesn't have many errors in his career, but he misplays almost everything.

Young played rather admirable defense in the Spring at second, and will certainly be no worse than Kent is, while having much more range. Also, he is the emergency catcher of all things.
