O's Not Planning Long-Term Deals For Markakis, Jones

Interesting note from Buster Olney's blog today:

Most major-league teams are working to sign their best young players to multi-year deals. But right now, the Orioles' internal philosophy is to wait for at least three years before discussing a multi-year deal with the likes of Adam Jones and Nick Markakis.

Surprising, isn't it?  If the Orioles eschew long-term deals, their best players will be much more expensive when the team is ready to compete.  Markakis, their star player, will be up for arbitration after this season.  Maybe he won't get the $10MM Ryan Howard did, but $7MM seems reasonable.  There were already rumblings that Markakis was angered by this year's $55K raise.

That's the kind of thinking that has gotten the O's where they are now. Markakis is a proven stud and when he's up for free agency he's going to leave because of the way he's been treated and because baltimore will still be a trainwreck.

Yeah but for their own sake, and for milehigh's, they need to get Markakis under wraps, he's the guy to get them back to where they need to be.
Can you imagine a few years down the line what they'll look like?

C-Matt Weiters
1B-Pedro Alvarez (If they draft him)
2B-Scott Moore (If he moves)
3B-Billy Rowell
SS-Not Quite sure
LF-Luke Scott
CF-Adam Jones
RF-Nick Markakis
D.H. Some power hitting Vet

Thats a good team. If only they had a Smart owner and a smart GM

I can totally understand not locking up Jones right now, but Markakis should definately be tied up this coming offseason. The GM is smart enough to realize this, but it's whether the owner wants to shell out the $$$ for what he probably views as an "unproven" player. I feel like Angelos has an age quota which must be met before he can dump millions of dollars in them... and that quota is about 32 y/o.

Well technicaly if you look at it 'Where they are now" is 1 game out of 1st in the AL East. Don't worry Markakis will get paid. Angelos loves him and his Greek heritage. But don't forget that everyone getting paid big money is not the norm. Right now I would doubt that Markakis would take a 3 year deal for anything less then $24 mil. And why would he? He can most likely make about $30 in Arb and then much more in Free Agency.

You can't assume the O's will draft Alvarez. He probably won't make it to their pick. I don't see Moore making the transition to full time 2B. LF will be Nolan Reimold, not Scott. Costanzo will be at 1B unless they sign Texiera (fun to think about, but unlikely) or Rowell turns out to be so bad defensively they have to move him to 1B.

I think it's really beating a dead horse to bash the O's for not jumping on the "locking up pre-arbitration players" bandwagon. Markakis, he deserves a long-term contract, and I'm quite sure that management gets a deal done rather than go to arbitration. Jones hasn't proven anything at the major league level yet. Let him show performance over time and then he'll get his.

Exactly. 3 year from now this guy is going to be hitting his prime and just mashing. He will be approaching free agency and what incentive would he have to sign a contract at that point? If he continues on this path he could get a 100 million dollar deal from somebody. Who knows.

As in, who knows why they wouldnt look into locking up Jones and Markakis, or in otherwords, holding onto your only position players really worth holding.

Peter Angelos is a fan's nightmare and should be banned from the game for what he has done to the once proud "Oriole Way". Once upon a time, Baltimore was the model franchise that all MLB clubs aspired to copy.

Once the Angelos "Reign of Terror" began, he decimated the farm system, undermined the loyalty of the fan base, and made this franchise the laughing stock of the game.

Angelos is entirely about making a buck at the fan's expense. He signs bargain players who are on the cheap, and has tries to pawn off over the hill, talentless journeymen, as being starter quality players. He refuses to reinvest, and continues to milk the franchise for what ever funds he can siphon off to his personal account. He has no intention of building a champion. They would cost too much money!

Yes, baseball is a business, but ownership should be required to reinvest X% of the profits into building the club thru player payroll, the minor league system, scouting and free agency. What Angelos has done to Baltimore is a crime and he should be removed immediately, if not tarred and feathered!

i hate angelos and what he's done to the Os (and how he hosed washington with the MASN deal and whined that there "are no real baseball fans in washington"), but he hasn't been "cheap" in his time in baltimore. it wasn't that long ago (98?) that he had a higher payroll than the yankees. they were 10th in MLB in 2007 in payroll. (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6106)

the guy's an idiot when it comes to baseball and has decimated the franchise in many ways, but "cheap" and "refusing to reinvest" aren't legitimate complaints. at least as far as payroll goes.

one thing that i will give McFail credit for is that he doesn't like to go to the arb hearings to air dirty laundry on both sides, so even if Markakis doesn't get signed long term at least he won't be 100% ticked off becuase of the reasons the O's think that he should take less

It's pretty fashionable to bash the Os. When they sign players the kind of money that will convince FAs to a losing ballclub, fans bash them for making bad deals. When the Os pass on bad contracts, fans complain that they never commit to what it takes to win.

Here we're talking about extending pre-arb players to longterm years way before they hit FA. That's not a foregone conclusion. If the Os were to do so, and a injury happens that reduces effectiveness, the Os will get bashed for making that extension. The Os are damned if they do; Damned if they don't.

Extending pre-arb players before they hit Free Agency is a recent trend. It isn't like it's been done for a decade that it's considered an industry standard..yet.

We're bashing the Os for NOT assuming the Cleveland model. It is getting to the point that the Os should maybe think about it hard with Markakis, but if they were to do it this season or this offseason, they wouldn't be behind in the strategy by any means. This is only Markakis' 3rd season.

I'm not sure they get any discount for locking up Markakis. He's already proven himself, so they're going to pay buyout+FA rates to lock him up.

Jones, on the other hand, is still a bit of a question mark. I think it probably makes sense to give him a deal similar to Longoria's, with a bit of a discount due to position.

Wow, The rockies lock up Tulo and the Rays lock up longoria...so every team in baseball should now lock up young talent...good idea.....why don't we ask the Rox management what they think about the Tulo deal now that he is on the 60 day DL and will have to rehab and prove himself at the major league level all again. Give the O's a break - and watch out, cause we are going to kick ass from 2010-2020!!!!!!!!

by that logic, OsMagic, nobody should ever sign anyone to a long-term contract. they could be on the 60day DL tomorrow!

and it's not just rockies/rays are the only teams that have done this. it's been a cleveland strategy for a long time (and has worked very well for them, overall).

OrioleMagic not to burst your bubble but that's a long stretch of years to keep winning under the use of journey men veterens like Steve Traschel but if they don't sign these guys to long term deals what are they going to build upon for the 2010-2020 seasons?

Olney doesn't say they will not sign them he just says they'll wait at least three years. It may cost them a little down the line but they'll have a better understanding of what they have. I'm all for it.
