Rosenthal's Latest: Delgado, Sexson, Crisp, Byrd

Ken Rosenthal has some items worth discussing in his latest Full Count video:

  • Trade Carlos Delgado for Richie Sexson? Rosenthal doesn't see why not. They're both in walk years, neither have a no-trade-clause, and they're both making roughly the same amount. I'll add to that by noting both have arguably met more success hitting in each other's league.
  • The Indians may put Paul Byrd on the block in an effort to acquire pieces that could eventually lead to an upgrade at 2B or 3B later this season.  The Indians currently have 7 capable starters in Sabathia, Carmona, Lee, Byrd, Westbrook, Sowers, and Laffey.
  • Crisp's Latest: It may be in the best interest of the Red Sox to wait to deal Coco Crisp in the offseason when the demand increases.  The Padres could use him now but the 2009 Free Agent class is thin at centerfield.  Coco could be maintained for $5.75MM in '09 and a club option in 2010 for $8MM, or a $0.5MM buyout.
  • Two Byrds in one post! Marlon Byrd's return from the DL could mean more time at DH for Josh Hamilton in an effort to keep him rested throughout the season.  Hamilton only played 90 games last year after missing about 4 years due to drug suspensions and injury.  If Byrd performs then this would take the Rangers out of the DH market.  So far, so good.

One Problem with Byrd forcing Hamilton to DH. Bradley has not shown that he can feild a postion on back to back days, much less feild a postion at an above average rate at all. Hamilton may get more time at DH, but morelikely one of Boggs Catalanatto or Byrd will be moved.

It would be great if the Indians could swap Byrd for a bat but it's going to be tough.

The Indians need a major league bat rather than prospects. The only team that would be interested in an aging Byrd in his walk year would be a contender with a hole in their rotation. Philly? The Mets? I'm just not seeing a match.

Whatever happened with Josh Barfield? Is he not even a viable option for them at this point?

Barfield is a one position player (2B) and is inferior defensively to Cabrera. It would help him if he was hitting but he isn't. About .250, I think.

The Padres could probably use Barfield back, as he had mild success back when he was with them. Does anyone know if Antonelli can play shortstop (assuming they eventually trade Khalil Greene)?

…Cubs, Brewers, Cards, Mets, Phillies, Braves, Fish (if they think they are for real and Cleveland eats some cash), Yankees (although I doubt we deal with them)… Then, if any of the kids start struggling in TB, or LA or Tor suffers injury… There are teams which might be looking for a starter; cant imagine the Indians really want to trade him though…

…Although he’s not hitting great, his line is actually LgAvg-ish for the INT. His BA is lower than one would hope, but its so early that 2 or 3 unlucky plays can still make a big difference. Add even just three singles to his stats and he goes to .275 / .319 / .412 ~ not that bad for a middle infielder in a very tough league… If not for Marte being forced to stay on the roster, I think he would actually be called up to spell AsCab from time to time...

…Cleveland wont trade him. Well unless they brought a 2B back ~ ie, he might end up in Balt if the Tribe decides to pursue Roberts…

Any chance Toronto could get the Cat back? We need a LF, and Wilkerson isn't really getting it done.

Poor Carlos Delgado, the guy cant buy a hit and now umpires are taking away his homeruns for absolutely no reason. I have noticed this more and more, but the umpiring is really brutal. The MLB still hasnt recovered from losing all those umpires a few years back. It seems like the umpires of today think people come to watch them and are constantly warning the benches, throwing guys out at the first chance that presents itself, and just trying to control the game. As for Sexson for Delgado, what for? I guess it could happen, but I dont see what would be the point.

As a Met fan, I never cared much for Paul Byrd, but after watching him pitch over the last couple years I would say sign me up if he comes cheap. You can never have to many arms, ever. Byrd pitching in Shea with a good defense behind him would at the very least be servicable. He also was solid for the tribe in the playoffs last year. That said though, with Pelfrey starting to throw better, Pedro's return on the horizon, and options like Jon Niese, Claduio Vargas, and Tony Armas, I would not want to pay too steep a price. But just in general, Paul Byrd as my number 5 starter? Sign me up.

Wow, I guess I'm a total idiot when I speculated that Sexson to the Mets was a good fit... Only one of the premier names in baseball agreed, mark it down as clearly another lack of foresight! LoL So I said Angel Pagan for Sexson and 7MM, but now you are talking about eating Delgado's contract, so only send 2MM to the Mets for getting Pagan and that sounds a whole lot less obsurd than what Rosenthal is pitching, so I guess I don't know what I'm talking about... Just like when I said the Padres have a bunch of old players and could use Willits to play center and everyone said that didn't make sense, now they've got the often dispatched Jody Gerut out there, a lesser player who isn't a true leadoff hitter... I really don't know sh*t... I'll make sure not to rub it in your faces after you call me an idiot every time someone with far more baseball knowledge than yourself substantiates my ideas...

I am not saying right or wrong, but what's the purpose of a Delgado for Sexson trade? Sexson's OBP is even lower than Delgado's. At least Delgado is familiar with NY and the team. He is hitting in the 7 spot now and starting to come around. There would be no reason to trade him for another guy who is overpaid and their contract runs out at the end of the season.

Delgado for Sexson? is Rosenthal out of his mind? Sexson can't handle pressure from the Seattle media let alone from the New York Media. Sexson can't hit or can't field, he has no plate discipline. He has been a disaster for the Mariners.

The only person I would trade him for, is Giambi after 2007, but Giambi is bad right now, he isn't awful like Sexson. Any team in their right mind would not get even near Sexson, and he will probably retire after this season, or take a huge pay cut..

"Wow, I guess I'm a total idiot when I speculated that Sexson to the Mets was a good fit... "

No, but there are plenty of other reasons why you are a total idiot. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. Even a broken clock is right 2 times every day. Shall I go on?

And also, like 2 weeks ago you were telling anybody that would listen that Sexson is a hall of famer and probably a 1st ballot one. Now you want to trade him for Delgado?

"Just like when I said the Padres have a bunch of old players and could use Willits to play center and everyone said that didn't make sense, now they've got the often dispatched Jody Gerut out there, a lesser player who isn't a true leadoff hitter... I really don't know sh*t... "

first of all, who ever said that Willits wouldnt be a good fit for SD? People never called you an idiot for that. People call you an idiot because you are such a homer it is almost comical and you constantly make absolutely absurd predictions that nobody but a moronic mariner homer could ever take seriously. Sexson and Beltre to the hall of fame for example. Or the idea that securing Griffey will "punch the M's playoff tickets". Or the notion that your 30th best prospect is the next Ichiro. Maybe it is because whenever somebody calls you out and argues your ideas with numbers and facts, you take shots at their family and things completely irrelevant. Maybe it is because it is just comical that such an uniformed baseball fan is using the username "baseballguru" People probably call you an idiot lots of times everyday, but I doubt it is because you suggested Willits to the Padres. My little sister could have made that suggestion.

Uhhh, interesting… I mean, doing a search for “gaseballguru” and “Pagan” provides no mention of such a conversation. But regardless ~ ok, if you somehow think youre proven intelligent and feel feel the need to brag about how smart you are because you claim to have said something rather different but not completely dissimilar to the rather questionable speculation scenario of a “trash-for-trash” trade provided by Rosenthal here, then good for you…

Do have to ask though, why would the Mariners want to trade Sexson; a player you describe as:
“Richie isn't the problem. He's already on course for 24 2B and 40 HR with a .349 OBP, he'll probably be over .400 OBP when the season ends and he's clearly a second half player. He'll be good for 40-50 bombs, how much does that go for?! Oh and based on Ibanez having 5 more hits and 8 more at-bats, if Sexson goes 5 for his next 8, he'll be hitting .306, so it's still early.”

…Really, why would you want to dump a .300BA / .400OBP 25 2B / 40-50 HR guy for next to nothing? Ohhh, well I guess maybe it has something to do with “I don't see them demoting or trading Clement” ~ an obvious assumption since “Clement's not just a prospect, but he's a guaranteed star, like .300/30/100 annual averages.”

…Anyway, thanks for providing your amazing “foresight” once more man ~ where would the rest of us be without it…

PS “guru”,

“ALL OF THESE POINTS I WAS CRAZY, ALL OF THESE POINTS I WAS STUPID, YET I'M ALWAYS RIGHT... KEEP NOTES FOR NOW ON, SEE HOW MANY TIMES I PUT A PREDICTION OUT THERE AND IT HAPPENS SMART *SS, YOU GOT THE BALLS TO DO THAT MUCH OR JUST KEEP TALKING SH*T WHILE I KEEP PULLING BOLD PREDICTIONS OUT OF MY *SS THAT KEEP COMING TRUE!!”

…like you requested, I’m keeping track. I’ll give you this one because I don’t want to see another couple thousand words spanning 4 unanswered posts as you argue about it. So anyway, with it you are now up to *1*… Grats man, youre on the board!

Nrmax,

“first of all, who ever said that Willits wouldnt be a good fit for SD? People never called you an idiot for that.”

…Yeah people did ~ but that’s not quite what he said. What he said was “The most logical trade would be Reggie Willits to SD for Kevin Kouzmanoff straight up. It fills two huge holes for both teams.” Everyone was already talking about Willits to the Padres, had been doing so for some time ~ it’s the “Willits for Kouz straight up” part that he brought to the table, and people rightfully couldn’t swallow…

PS, since the “guru” way is to act all high and mighty if something you say comes close even close to looking like its correct, I figured I should brag about the fact that I made this prediction in that Willits thread:
“I expect Willits to have something like a .260/.360/.340ish line if given a full years ABs for someone in 2008.”
…Now, not a full year of course and it may or may not stay that way, but was kind cool to see considering Willits is actually hitting .269/.367/.346 at this time. Sweet, so do I get to call myself a genius now?

You can call youself a guru. :)
