Tim ... you should see if you can get Jacque Jones to chat with everyone on this site ... a major-league talent, in the middle of the season, who is struggling with decisions about his future ... should be quite interesting.

That quote about Bedard is amazing. Bavasi isn't making it any easier to trade that guy.
I also disagree with the assessment that Bedard will land just 2 players. I think his value has gone down slightly BUT for a team in need he still represents a potential ace - a season changer.

Sounds like Bedard would work well for the Dodgers ... Torre pulls pitchers at the first sign of trouble and rarely does a starter see 90 pitches.

rossdfarian,
I agree. Those Bedard coments are amazing.
But... I guess 99 pitches would be just fine if he could go 15 pitches per inning. Oh well, good luck getting the same value back for him.

Scott Proctor just wept a little.

Classic ...

Leyland would have wanted Bonds if not for already having Sheffield.... I'm starting to like Sheff, if for nothing else but keeping Bonds out of the D.

Gary Sheffield -.344/.331/.675 OPS+ 84
Tigers 6.5 out of 1st with a losing record. YEAH screw Barry Bonds!! Gary Sheffield is way less of a douchebag. He's never been a jerk to anyone, caused problems in a clubhouse, been surly to the media, or been linked to steroids.

At least he only costs 14 million this year, and 14 million in '09, with an extra 4 million a year in deferred interest.

Bill Bavasi, Steve Phillips. Steve Phillips, Bill Bavasi. You two probably have a lot to talk about so I'll let you guys catch up.

“The Tigers would've been interested in Barry Bonds if they didn't have Gary Sheffield, according to Jim Leyland.”
…Reason number 3 on the list of about 2000 things saying the Indians should have brought Bonds in… (Note to Indians: When your competitor wants him, you should too ~ esp when you have an obvious spot for him…)

Any idea what it would take for the Braves to get Bedard? Would Gorkys Hernandez, Brent Lillibridge and one of our lefties from AA get it done?

"Any idea what it would take for the Braves to get Bedard? Would Gorkys Hernandez..."
...Braves should hold onto that kid for a bit longer ~ stock is going to go through the roof!

Gorkys' stock may indeed go through the roof since he's tearing up Myrtle Beach to the tune of .313/.367/.515 right now. But if he could be a centerpiece in a trade for a legit #2 starter to bridge the gap between Huddy and the young guns in the rotation I'm all for it. I'd rather keep Schafer and have him in CF next year than hold out for Gorkys who isn't even in AA yet. I think a combonation of Gorkys, one of our seemingly 2000 lefties in AA and maybe Lilli should get the job done. If the front office doesn't want to give up Lilli just yet then maybe Diory Hernandez would fit the bill. Regardless, for the right price, I want Bedard in ATL.

It's going to take more than that to land Bedard. His stock might have fallen some - but certainly not that much.

Yeah, but you are talking about Bedard here ~ is that what you want to spend such a trade chip on? He is said to have character issues and be a problem in the clubhouse, his (now) ex GM is complaining about him and he isnt breaking out at all like so many thought he would. Plus, he again has been hurt… At this point he just looks like a problematic gamble ~ I say ya spend such chips on more prolific parts…
If you check out Bedards stats you see that he 3-4 guys in 7 of his 12 starts. He has gone just 6 or fewer innings 7 of 12 times. He has K’ed more than 5 in only 4 of the 12… Just seems a tad bit risky when everything is considered, ya know…

Considering what Bavasi gave up there's no way they get equal value. I think Jones+Tillman+ would've been plenty, but Bavasi insisted on adding more for a shaky 1-2 starter.
If ATL wants him I wouldn't give up more than 2 of any of the bigger prospects. In fact, that should go for just about anyone in or near the top 100.....
Hey the Yanks could have him for Tabata+Marquez+Igawa i would do that. But SEATTLE IS THE WORST ORGINIZATION OUTSIDE OF PITT....

All along I've question Berards heart while he was in Balt.I'm sure Bedard will be a decent pitcher, but cy material you would have to pitch 200+ inings to do so.Baltimore cashed in on BEDARD.Tillman looks real good in aa ball and butler is doing decent in a ball. Jones will be the cf balt hasn't had since Anderson all in time.I'M LOL EVERY DAY AT THE BASEBALL STANDINGS!If Bedard is traded by Seattle I don't see them getting anything close back to what they gave up.

A lot of us were lambasted earlier for questioning Bedard's heart and whether he really does qualify as a #1 guy. Amazing how the stats rolled in and we were told it doesn't matter that he doesn't pitch 200 innings. I can already see people changing their tune saying "they knew this all along!" I'll have to admit there's some vindication here. Whether or not Jones and Tillman acutally achieve their potential is nearly irrelevant. The bottom line is that the Mariners made a poor roll of the dice here. They traded top shelf talent for a guy who could care less about the team he plays for. These fans who want to give up Hernandez look like they want to repeat Bavasi's mistake. If I'm the Cubs, I make a wizard of OZ deal...Rich Hill (no courage) for Erik Bedard (no heart). Maybe you add Felix Pie who disappointingly, may have no baseball brain. He'll need a team that can afford to let him play through his mistakes. This way both teams assume significant risk in exchange for talent.
