Odds And Ends: More Draft Recap

A couple of more interesting links recapping the Rule 4 draft...

[On picking Tim Beckham over Buster Posey] . . . That pick just came down to the Rays' personal preference. The easier choice would have been Posey, because he'll be ready quicker and fill a more obvious need, but Tampa Bay thought Beckham had more upside.

  • Kevin Czerwinski has a cool list of over 30 players that were drafted, all of whom have a more famous relative, including Jeremy Beckham, a second baseman from Georgia Southern and older brother of top pick Tim Beckham, who was also selected by the Rays in the 17th round.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Doesn't apply to this...but a nice arm just became available. Sidney Ponson was just DFAd by the Rangers.

I've noticed a couple teams passing or forfeiting their late round picks. Does anyone know why they do this? Is it as simple as just not thinking there is anyone left worth drafting or is there some other influence at work?

How does he fail to mention Beau Brett? Swing and a miss by Czerwinski!

in the old days the draft just last until nobody wanted to pick anymore. then they cut the draft to 50 rounds but there are still teams that dont want/need 50 players. so they just choose to skip in the later rounds. keep in mind that every team only has 2 short-season squads so they are really just filling out 2 rosters or about 50 players. maybe a couple of guys will go to higher teams but a lot of teams still have 20-30 guys left from those 2 short-season squads from last year. so we are really only talking about 20-30 open roster spots.

My guess is that Shane Boras will demand a $14 million contract just to play rookie ball.
