I could see Lo Duca going back to the Marlins.

You're welcome for the scoop ;)

Weren't the yankees checking in on lo duca? Glad they didn't get him....pudge is a better option. Sorry to plug them twice in the same day, but this new blog just called the yankees the trade deadline winner. Check it out - good stuff.

Felipe Lopez could be a good, cheap option for the Mets, Omar should pursue that

flush, thank for the link! It seems like a pretty cool website.

"Sorry to plug them twice in the same day, but this new blog just called the yankees the trade deadline winner."
If by "winners" they mean "acquired the most players", I'd agree. I think they overvalued their catching void and undervalued Farnsworth. While he has a bad reputation, he was having a good season. Outside of Marte and Rivera, the bullpen is patchwork that isn't good enough to be in the post-season.

the last thing the mets need is another middle infielder. They need corner outfield help and more pitching

Johnny Estrada was also released. The Tigers may have some interest in one of them. Lopez might be a good option for the Orioles, maybe even the Twins.

Lopez is a terrible option for any team! This is the best news of my life!
Posted by: kenny g | July 31, 2008 at 11:32 PM
Lopez wasn't let go to make room for Bonifacio, he was let go to make room for Alberto Gonzalez, who I've been hearing is going to step into the starting lineup.

expect Paul Lo Duca to sign with the Tigers within the next 48 hours.

What's the point of even HAVING a user ID when typekey logs you out every time you close your browser. Worthless blog host, can't you use something else Tim?
For the current topic, nice to see the Nats have the right idea, if you couldn't get something for these deadbeat vets prior to the deadline, then just waive their ass and let them be someone else's problem. The money is a sunk cost, so don't sweat it and let the meat go away.
I hope the Cubs do the same thing with Eyre and Howry. Waive 'em.

I'm very glad you arent the Cubs GM.

The Braves are having some issues with backups Prado and Gotay, I've always been a fan of Lopez and would love to see more speed in atl. Kinda doubt it though.
Posted by: insomniac | August 01, 2008 at 12:29 AM
agreed johnny rotten. except i'd give howry about a month. with the emergence of samardzija as a 7th/8th inning option (when woody comes back) howry being a better second half pitcher doesn't seem to apply this year. with jeff making him fight for his job i think he'll do better. eyre looks extremely shaky.

There's no way in hell the Cubs waive Bob Howry. He was great in the second half last year so I'm sure they're hoping he's going to bounce back. Plus, he's a lock to be at least a Type B free agent this summer, with a chance to be a Type A. At this point those draft picks are worth enough alone to hold onto him.
As for Eyre, I'm not as opposed to letting him go, but I think an August trade would be more likely. He's still got some stuff going for him.

Icedrake...
"Undervalue Farnsworth'?????
How much Yankee baseball do you watch?
I go to about 50 games a year and I can tell you with 100% certainty that there is not ONE Yankee fan who can fathom a scenario where we would be saying "gee if only we had kept Farnsworth".
Most would have GIVEN him away. Sure Pudge is not what he used to be, but to get a 14x all star, a future Hall of Famer, who can still throw and it hitting near .300 for "Worthless"...you do it every single time!

I think the Orioles (in serious need of a shortstop) will pick up Lopez. Although not the best shortstop, he is better than anything they have in their organization.

I love how the Nationals never trade these guys. They'll release worthless veterans or sign them to extensions, but never trade them.

"I love how the Nationals never trade these guys. They'll release worthless veterans or sign them to extensions, but never trade them."
I was thinking the same thing. It's as if they flip a coin with one side that says "extension" and one that says "release."
Dimitri Young (flip coin) - extension
Ronnie Belliard (flip coin) - extension
Christian Guzman (flip coin) - extension
Paul Lo Duca (flip coin) - release
Felipe Lopez (flip coin) - release
Johnny Estrada (flip coin) - release

The Nats are a horrible franchise that will never get better. Ever. How can there be any hope over there? Yikes.
Posted by: Johnny Rotten | August 01, 2008 at 09:15 AM
Hope coincides with the firing of Jim Bowden.
When he's out, things will improve.

''The Nats are a horrible franchise that will never get better. Ever. How can there be any hope over there? Yikes.''
They will get better. Ryan Zimmerman will become MVP sometime in his career. They just need to release a bunch of old crap and start bringing in the good and the new. It's like c'mon Odalis Perez as your ace? After the season Nats should look at Ben Sheets or CC Sabathia. Then go from their. If I were them I'd get rid of everybody except Chad Cordero and Rayn Zimmerman, Elijah Dukes, and that guy they got from Arizona in the Jon Rauch trade.

I think that the red sox should look into Lo Duca or Estrada. The sox need despirate help behind the plate. Jason isn't hitting the ball and cash can't handle wakefields knuckleball and can't make contact. So, it would be very smart for the sox to look at both veteran back up's for jason and send cash back to the minors.

Get rid of everyone except zimmerman cordero and dukes interesting. Pretty sure cordero is gone. They may also want to hang on to flores and lannon. You never know a catcher whos 24 and a left handed pitcher whos 24 would have 12+ wins on another team come along every day. As far as the rest of the team sure you can get rid of them.
