| Rosenthal's Latest: Howard, Burrell, Burnett »

Let's take a look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman.
- Despite the headline "Nats GM in trouble," Heyman says Jim Bowden has the support of his bosses. They do not blame him for Aaron Crow and are not concerned with his possible connection to the scout skimming scandal.
- Heyman suggests the Rockies could shop first baseman Todd Helton this winter if he demonstrates a healthy back in September. Here's the thing - if Helton was a free agent and you had to give him a three-year deal, what would you pay? $5MM a year maybe? Are the Rockies going to eat $40MM? Helton might have to be swapped for another bad contract.
- Heyman sees Ryan Dempster getting four years and $48MM, and Oliver Perez snagging $60MM over five. Are they worth that?
- People close to Greg Maddux are saying he wants to pitch next year. Heyman also sees John Smoltz and Tom Glavine back in '09.
- "Some are expecting" the Reds to be big players in free agency this year. The Reds figure to be in the market for catching and outfield help. Manny Ramirez would be interesting.
- Heyman wonders if the Mets will be players for Francisco Rodriguez this winter.
Oh sure, Manny can bunk with Chad Johnson. I think we have enough "personalities" in Cincy as it is.

seriously? all things considered, manny would be a downgrade from adam dunn.
Similar OBP, similar power/production/speed. Same lousy glove in LF. Manny would be a slightly better player, possibly more of a team leader, but he comes with baggage and a higher price tag than dunn. Jocketty would be more likely to bring back dunn...which could be an interesting move...bring in prospects to rent him out and then bring him back in the off season...has there ever been precedent for a move like that?

As a Cubs fan, I was hoping Dempster would go for a 3/30 contract...is that wishful thinking?
Posted by: Aduncaroo | August 22, 2008 at 04:11 PM
Hasn't Jocketty's past kind of shown that he likes defensive teams? Seems like he wouldn't be the type to bring in a Manny of Dunn...but I guess if you were going to bring in a bat with bad glove, LF would be the place to put em...

No chance of bringing Dunn back I think. He traded Dunn for less than 2 picks worth because he was most likely not going to offer him arbitration.
If he had wanted to resign Dunn, he wouldn't have made that deal.

"He traded Dunn for less than 2 picks worth because he was most likely not going to offer him arbitration."
Less than 2 picks worth...assuming the talks are true and Micah Owings is the third player I would certainly say they got more than 2 picks worth. Talent may not be as good as two picks (which is still arguable) but 2 of the 3 players are major league ready. I would say they actually did well on this trade.

how about Prince Fielder to the Reds for Homer Bailey plus. Homer is still you enough that he could still hold some value.
Prince could be the veteran power the reds need to fill the voids, with Prince taking first they could make the speculated move of putting votto in LF. Power problem solved without breaking the bank (still in arbitration years) which leaves money to fill CF, SS, and C.

Manny needs to be a DH. He may be able to play left field for a year or two but he barked his way out of the only left field he could play - Fenway.
I see the Mariners making a play for him. He belongs in the AL West and Seattle has shown that they will pay.

I would agree and say the Reds did well in the Dunn deal. Considering that it wasn't a sure thing that he'd get offered arbitration, to be able to land Micah Owings, Dallas Buck and Wilkin Castillo is almost no doubt worth more than two picks. Owings looked like he'd be a solid 3-4 there for a long time, and Buck and Castillo are both solid prospects. There was some pretty solid value landed even if they couldve had two picks

Coltholt-
Why would the Brewers trade Prince to a division rival and take back Homer Bailey? Bailey should of been dealt in the past when his value was still high.

I don't see Glavine coming back. He had nothing end of last season and nothing when he was healthy this season. Would the Braves even want to waste a roster spot on him?

Please Tim figure out a way to block jadog and his stupid self-promotion/spam. So annoying seeing it in every post one or two times.
To the topic at hand - Dempster is a really interesting case. If this year is for real then he is certainly worth $12-15m. His numbers are tremendous. Of course, if this is an aberration and if he settles down to what people were expecting (mid to high 3's ERA) then a value of $10m/year seems more reasonable. He is one of the biggest wild cards out there.

There should be an on-going thread dedicated to Smoltz, Maddux, and Glavine. I hope to god Glavine doesn't return. I'd love to see Smoltz back. Maddux deserves to pitch again as well.

any chance the Yanks trade for Helton?
Posted by: maximumpotential | August 22, 2008 at 06:54 PM
yeah it would something like
fielder for bailey, votto and a throw in.
Posted by: 661folife | August 22, 2008 at 06:55 PM
If I have a team like, say, the Phillies or Marlins, where I'm getting power at 2B to compensate for a lack thereof at 1B, I'd gladly take on Helton for the right price. The guy knows how to get on base.

"As a Cubs fan, I was hoping Dempster would go for a 3/30 contract...is that wishful thinking?"
He probably looks at Lilly's 4/40 and thinks he deserves at least that much and a lot more than Marquis' 3/21.

661forlife.
no way that jocketty would give up that kind of package for a first baseman no matter who it is. Votto is a solid player that they have under team control for what, 5 years? No way on earth that he will be moved...especially not packaged in a deal for 2 or 3 years of fielder (at about 12-14 per)
Posted by: coltholt | August 22, 2008 at 07:35 PM
"Manny would be a slightly better player, possibly more of a team leader"
It looks weird seeing "Manny" and "team leader" in the same sentence, without the phrase "will never be a" sandwiched in between.

Since when are the phillies and marlins two teams lacking in power from the 1B position? maybe in BA, but certainly not power. if they're looking for a higher average helton would be fine i guess, but they don't need any more power at 1B and even if they did, helton's not going to provide it.
Posted by: jacklaf | August 22, 2008 at 08:47 PM
yeah manny and chad johnson would be chilling and talking about how bad their contracts are all the time.
Posted by: kingfelix93 | August 22, 2008 at 09:59 PM
IF the Rox ate enough of Helton's contract, I could see him moved to a not-very-offensively-powerful AL team.
AL because they could DH him to reduce injury risk. Helton with the team paying 8-10MM in exchange for a fringe prospect. Rox would eat a total of 21MM, which is better than Heyman's 40MM.

Will the Mets be players in K-Rod? Absolutely. It's between the Mets, Tigers, and Angels IMO.
Posted by: melonis rex | August 23, 2008 at 08:32 AM
The Mets have the following salaries coming off the books:
Billy Wagner $10.5M
El Duque $7M
Pedro Martinez $11.8M
Moises Alou $7.5M
That's 36.8M coming off the books right there, and they're moving into a new stadium. Re-sign Ollie and give a contract to K-Rod, and the Mets pitching staff will be looking pretty nice.
Posted by: JK47 | August 23, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Billy Wagner isn't a free agent after this season. He is signed through '09 with an option for '10. With that being said, I think it would be a good time for the Mets to attempt to trade Wagner in this offseason, provided he voids his NTC. I haven't met a Mets fan that actually trust Wagner in the ninth inning of games (I sure don't). However, there are plenty of teams out there that would attempt to acquire a top-notch closer with the assurance that he is healthy.
For those who are questioning the idea that K-Rod will never be the same because Scioscia is using him too much, assure yourself that he'll be fine. K-Rod has been destined for great things like a record-setting save season since the end of the '02 season. I think the Mets should really go out there and get K-Rod this offseason because it assures the back end of their bullpen for years to come, as opposed to having ''Billy Ray Benitez'' closing games only till 2010.

"seriously? all things considered, manny would be a downgrade from adam dunn."
You are joking, right? Manny is the better hitter, has a better glove (looked at his range factor and fielding percentage this year?), a better arm (always has had a great arm that people seem to forget), and actually has a personality.
Let me put this another way. Manny is going to the Hall of Fame and Dunn is Dave Kingman with a better eye.

I could see the Yanks going after Helton. Duncan has shown no signs this year that he's going to be the starter next year and the Yanks would love to kill Giambi's contract. I could see the Yankees eating most of Helton's contract in exchange for Austin Jackson or Ian Kennedy.
