How Tim Purpura could ever get a job as a big league GM again is beyond me....
Posted by: Darin | August 25, 2008 at 10:10 AM
would he really replace jon daniels with tim purpura? that would be the dumbest move he could possibly make
Posted by: boomshwa12 | August 25, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Really. The Yanks are callin it quits if they do.They are only 5 games out of the wildcard. I think this next series with BoSox will determine it. The Yanks should sweep. No Lowell, Drew, Beckett, and Lester to face. and the Yanks got Mussina and Pettite on the hill. This is the perfect chance. If they lose the series trade Matsui(even though I like the guy) but i doubt they'll get much. Remember in the offseason there were rumors of him to the Giants for Sanchez or LIncecum. F@#@!
Posted by: yankfan1 | August 25, 2008 at 10:12 AM
The rumor was Matsui for Noah Lowry+scrap, not Sanchez or Lincecum.
There wasn't a sensible deal on the table.
Posted by: zs190 | August 25, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Wait....whaaaaat? Matsui for Sanchez OR Lincecum, as in the Yanks get to pick? I have a hard time believing anything along the lines of "Matsui for Lincecum" would have gotten printed here.
Posted by: JohnKruksWaistLine | August 25, 2008 at 10:22 AM
and if it did, I don't remember it.
Posted by: JohnKruksWaistLine | August 25, 2008 at 10:22 AM
I remember it well. Lincecum for Matsui.
It was proposed by endless Yankee fans who felt that the Giants could use a broken down, overpaid left fielder. Why wouldn't they want to trade Lincecum for that?
Posted by: bjsguess | August 25, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Forget Purpura. The only one of those guys who would be better than JD would be Hunsicker.
Posted by: MadmanTX | August 25, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Really, my bad. Ok I was wrong on the thing about lincecum but I'm pretty sure they were saying Matsui and prospect for Sanchez/ Lowry/ Corriea. Whatever, no team wants him anyway.
Posted by: yankfan1 | August 25, 2008 at 10:40 AM
Oh, I was thinkin about the Jays wanting Lincecum or Cain for Rios. Sorry.
Posted by: yankfan1 | August 25, 2008 at 10:42 AM
You might've heard Matsui for Lincecum from the type of fan that thought Jacque Jones would get the Cubs something good.
The more credible rumors were Matsui for Noah Lowry and a reliever or a B-prospect, which is something I could've seen SF throwing out there in hopes that the Yankees really wanted to get rid of Matsui.
Posted by: yanksfan | August 25, 2008 at 10:54 AM
Matsui and Cabrera for Lowry and a reliever or two.
Posted by: Chris | August 25, 2008 at 11:08 AM
So let me get this straight?...
John Daniels gets canned after rebuilding the Rangers farm system to a status better than ever before? Oh and the Rangers are finally winning...
Nolan, that makes NO SENSE!! But hey, I would be happy with Tim Purpura too, he only robbed the Astros of all the farm system and sent them to the bottom of the NL!! Good pick to me!
Posted by: rangersvoice | August 25, 2008 at 11:24 AM
Hopefully the Phillies pick up one of those guys for the bench. Last night Andy Tracy (remember him? probably not, used to play for the Expos!) got an at bat with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th with the game on the line. He walked, and the Phils ultimately won the game, but I highly doubt that happens again. I would welcome Millar, Payton or Catalanotto. Wish the Phils would go after Huff, but we would not have room for him next season if we are able to resign Burrell.

OK, we all agree that Lincecum to the Yanks for Matsui was and is preposterous. The Lowry thing was a lot closer.
More important: Why in the name of all that's holy would Nolan Ryan want to dump Daniels after the job he's done?! Sure, he was green at the beginning and the Gonzalez/Chris Young deal with San Diego was one of the worst trades in recent memory, but since that point, Daniels has done a terrific job rebuilding the franchise around youth. Trading for Hamilton, signing Bradley, the Gagne deal, the Tex deal, and the draft...
Suddenly Texas has one of the top 5 farm systems in the majors with truly special talents like Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz, Engel Beltre, Elvis Andrus, Blake Beavan, Chris Davis, Taylor Teagarden, Max Ramirez, Michael Main, Justin Smoak, Robbie Ross, and many more either in the majors already or poised to break in over the next few years.
Much of the credit goes to Daniels. Not only for orchestrating the various deals and drafts that brought in all of this talent, but also for stressing the importance of a strong farm system, building from within and player development.
For Ryan to ignore such outstanding work in favor of his friends would prove a travesty and could undo much of the great work that's been done in Arlington over the past few years. While I'm not a Rangers fan, that would be a shame; their future looks so bright. But hey...look at it this way: it could be a brilliant business move of synergistic marketing... After all, in sewing the seeds of his club's eventual self-destruction and giving fans across the state a perpetual headache (and heartache, I'm sure) , Ryan will be able to hawk loads of Aleve.

7thinningstretch-
Are the Phils likely to re-sign Burrell? I thought all the talk had him leaving? Just asking; I haven't really kept up with his situation. The problem with Huff to Philly is that he's not a very good fielder and while he could adequately man LF or 1B, you're set at both of those slots. Furthermore, while I believe Huff is certainly available, I'd be shocked if the O's looked at him as a salary dump, the way they did Chad Bradford. I think McPhail is fine with the idea of bringing Huff back next year; the hope being that the offense will continue to produce as it has over the second half this year, while the young pitchers progress... He's open to a deal (since they ARE still rebuilding), but it would have to be a fairly significant deal filling one or more holes with young talent. In other words, despite being a waiver pick-up, it wouldn't come cheap. I think that's why he cleared waivers and why he'll stay in Baltimore. As an O's fan, I'm actually all for dealing Huff, but I agree with McPhail's logic. Without getting a fairly strong...say...SS prospect back (although it could probably be done for ANY top prospect), I just don't see it happening and since I don't think any teams really value Huff as WORTH a top prospect...we're stuck with him.
It's not an ideal situation, but when you consider he's on pace to be a Type A FA after next year AND the production and protection he brings (or has brought over the course of this year, at least) to a lineup desperate for both...well, like I said: I understand McPhail's thinking.
Still, if Tampa came calling offering Brignac, I'd be all over that like a fat kid on a cookie. Again, it just doesn't seem like there's a strong match.
On the other hand, if the Phillies simply offered to take Payton's contract- or the bulk of it- I'm sure he could be yours. Hell, McPhail might GIVE UP a prospect just to get rid of him! (LOL) Millar I'm not as sure about. I doubt he's a Type B, but if they think it's even close, he'll probably stick around; if he's not, the O's would probably take the salary relief with a smile.

Regarding the Rangers, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Posted by: Mike Simms | August 25, 2008 at 12:09 PM
This is the problem with all these major league people thinking that they have a degree in business and headlining front office jobs.
I would agree with the previous post, Jon Daniels has done a remarkable job, i would just get him 2 or 3 viable starting pitchers and not someone who had a good season the previous year.
Posted by: jdubs | August 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM
I love Nolan and would hate to see him screw something up with the Rangers by hiring Purpura. Purpura is a terrible GM, this is coming straight up from an Astros fan who hates that guy. It would be good for the Rangers if they hired Hunsicker, Houston loved the guy. He made good drafts, kept the system up to date with good minor league signings, and kept the major league ball club very competitive though out his tenure here. Houston misses the guy, but even Wade is better than Purpura (I am one of those people who don't know why people in Philly hate Wade, he got the stars they have today, but that is neither here nor there)

"Ain't broke don't fix it"
"Rangers are winning again"
"Jon Daniels has done a remarkable job"
Huh? Are you kidding me? Are these members of Daniels'family posting these insane remarks?
Rangers are in another freefall and have one of the worst pitching staffs IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL. Everyone's aware of all his incredibly moronic trades- he has failed tremendously.
Bring on Hunsicker, please !!

Kinsler5,
I absolutely agree with you. The Rangers have an awful, awful pitching staff -- again! One of the least discussed bad trades Daniels made was for Brandon McCarthy from the White Sox for Danks and Masset. Danks is on the verge of becoming a truly great lefty, and McCarthy may never amount to much. Those sorts of trades can haunt an organization.

Don't forget JD gifted Armando Galarraga to the Tigers for Michael Hernandez who was quickly dumped. It would have been funny if Danks and Galarraga made the AL All-Star team along with Justin Duchsherer (not traded by JD) while Volquez was pitching for the NL. Danks, Galarraga, and Duchsherer were all very close to being All-Star quality this season. Throw Chris Young in there and we have 3 near-All-Star and 2 All-Star-quality young starting pitchers all being dealt away within the past 6 years, and all we have to show for it is Hamilton. K, thanks....
