« Royals Acquire Jacobs For Nunez | Main | Odds and Ends: Yankees, Lowe, D'Backs »
The announcement was made a month ago, but today the Tigers officially declined Edgar Renteria's $12MM option for 2009 (or $11MM - I've seen conflicting reports). It's possible the Tigers re-sign Renteria at a lower salary. Will they offer him arbitration, since he profiles as a Type A free agent? Eddie Bajek notes that Renteria would prefer the Tigers decline to offer, making him more attractive to other teams.

Tigers should definitely offer arbitration. I strongly doubt Rent-a-Wreck stays for one more year, and its a way of possibly recouping the lost value.
Furcal's injuries can make him unattractive, so Renteria's primary competition is Cabrera.

Trade KJ and go get em Wren!

"Furcal's injuries can make him unattractive, so Renteria's primary competition is Cabrera. "
Interesting, since these two DESPISE each other.
I can't see Edgar declining arbitration...wouldn't he be guarenteed 8 mil next year if they offered it to him???
Not sure if he can beat that in the open market.

"Furcal's injuries can make him unattractive, so Renteria's primary competition is Cabrera. "
Tell that to just about every team in baseball, because they are just begging for the Dodgers to slip up and not resign Furcal.
Furcal looked plenty healthy in the playoffs and has potentially the best all around skill set of any shortstop in baseball.

And Jim Leyland can clear his throat as he says "Welcome to Detroit, Jack Wilson."

It's a near certainty that the Cardinals will sign Renteria.
And unless it's a one year deal, they'll regret that move.
It seems highly unlikely that Detroit would offer arbitration to Edgar. What happens if Renteria accepts? That'll mean Detroit will have paid $3M to buy out his contract, and then will pay the guy at least $8M (and probably more!) through arbitration. No one ever gets a salary cut in arbitration, and Renteria would probably ask for $9M. In other words, Detroit would probably pay him more than they would if they'd picked up his option.

What happen with Renteria this year? He went from .332 in ATL to .270
Anyone?

Same thing that happened to him when he went from the NL to Boston!

Yeah, Renteria is a pretty clear example of someone who just doesn't hit AL pitching. Even his splits against AL teams have been wildly inconsistent in interleague in his recent NL seasons.

Chi, I believe the main problem with Renteria is that he is playing in the AL. During his time with the Cardinals and even with the Braves, he played well. His time with the Sox and Tigers left something to be desired. I believe a return to the NL would serve him the most good. I just think he is more of a NL player and will feel more comfortable there, which should equal playing better as well.

Personally, I hope that Renteria returns to the Cardinals. I know there are alot of pros and cons to that signing, but Renteria's most productive years were easily with the Cardinals. I think alot of that has to do with the fact that he feels most comfortable playing in STL and a return to the team would give him the boost that he needs.

Doesn't STL have a bad taste in their mouths about him taking the barely bigger deal to leave and go to Boston?
I do think that they are desperate enough for a decent middle infielder that they will probably get over it...

I agree, the Cards probably do have a bad taste in their mouth from him leaving to go to the team that had just been them in the WS the previous season. He left for 4/40 mil when the Cards were offering 4/32-36. However, we all know that if a team can win now with a player, they are usually willing to put bad feelings aside for that chance. Another factor is that it was Jocketty who offered the deal to Renteria and was burned, not John M. I think that the Cards will waste no time to sign him if they decide he's the guy that they want at short. It should be interesting for sure.

I like Renteria on the Twins.

I could see Renteria on the Twins.

"Another factor is that it was Jocketty who offered the deal to Renteria and was burned, not John M."
I think the question is, how does TLR feel about him? Thats probably what will ultimately determine it.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | October 30, 2008 at 03:02 PM
The only problem there is the Twins are known for staying away from some of the higher priced free agents and signing/trading for less expensive players or promoting through their system. They may make an exception for Renteria though.
Posted by: JP | October 30, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Case in point. Obviously TLR's opinion will come into play, however, I don't know how much anymore. Johnny Mo gave an interview the other day and said basically that the Cards were not going to go out and make a trade just so they could say that they made a trade. He would only make a trade if it was the right deal for the team. In some ways, I believe that this may have been directed at Tony since he was critical of the front office late last year. Still, yes, Tony's opinion will still have some weight, but if John decides he wants Renteria regardless, he will go out there and try to get him.
Posted by: JP | October 30, 2008 at 03:08 PM
I don't see the Twins going after Renteria. If I'm Bill Smith, I'm using the money to try to lock up one of Slowey, Baker or Liriano. Yeah, the DY trade is starting to hurt.
"Tell that to just about every team in baseball, because they are just begging for the Dodgers to slip up and not resign Furcal.

However, there are some teams which will take a pass on him due to health issues. He has one of the best skill sets for a SS, but the health issues and a multi-year deal scares off some suitors. Furcal is on a completely different level than Renteria/Cabrera, and thus Rent's primary competition is Ocab, not Furcal.

Cardinals should stay away from Renteria.

"What happen with Renteria this year? He went from .332 in ATL to .270

Renteria is a fastball contact hitter who thrives in the small ball, hard throwing style of the NL. Too many breaking balls and not enough running in the AL to bring out his strengths.
Posted by: AA | October 30, 2008 at 04:46 PM
I think in the case of Larussa vs. the GM, John will refer to Tony's knowledge and judgement of Renteria considering he played for him for a long time. With other players, sure, the GM will make the decision. But this is a guy Tony knows very well, and will probably make his opinion heard loud and clear, either way.
