« Towers Finds Third Team For Cubs-Peavy Deal? | Main | C.C. Sabathia Rumors: Thursday »
According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald, the Tigers' talks for Julio Lugo have stalled and a deal is unlikely. It seemed simple on the surface: Lugo for Dontrelle Willis or Nate Robertson.
Also, the Red Sox plan to offer arbitration to Type A free agent Jason Varitek. McAdam says Tek "almost certainly won't accept the offer." In a recent poll, about 40% of MLBTR readers surveyed expected the Red Sox to offer arbitration to Varitek.

Am I missing something as to me it seems like a real risk that he could accept arbitration. He is not going to get a Posada type contract no matter what Borad says and I doubt that any team will offer a salary that even comes close to what he earned in 2008, especially if they have to give up their first round pick. If Varitek and Boras believe that last year was merely a down year, and not a decline in skills like the rest us believe, then I could see them accepting arbitration banking the $10m+ for the season and then looking for another deal next off season following an improved season.

It isn't a risk at all to offer 'Tek arbitration. If he wants to come back on a one year deal, great. Both the Red Sox and the fan base would love to see that. Of course, we'd still like to see a young catcher brought in to share starting time with him.

Good, and very much expected, move for the Sox to offer arbitration to Tek. If he accepts, great. If he declines, oh well and keep working on a 2 year deal, maybe with an option for the 3rd.

1 year with Tek no huge thing. Can always hit for him regardless from 7th inning on this season if he does accept anyway and still think the Sox are going to get another catcher until Exposito, or Wagner are ready. Rangers may be wanting a bounty for the catchers they have, but Boston has a minor league system full of pitching available to trade and a replacement for tek can be had somewhere.
Not a bad trade-off, 2 good draft picks if tek refuses arbitration anyway to allow the Sox high picks and BB fans to not hammer them for drafting more unsignable high schoolers in round 20-30 and signing, or Ryan Westmoreland/Peter Hissey 1st round talents in rounds 4 and 5 of this past years draft for instance.

Why would the Sox want Dontrelle Willis? He put up crap numbers in the majors and even his minor league numbers werent stellar. Plus he is known to ego trip in the clubhouse routinely.
Why bother? Just buy out Lugo, give the job to Lowrie and move on.

As far as I can tell, offering Varitek arbitration is a no-brainer for the Red Sox.
Worst case scenario, they're stuck with their spiritual leader for another season at a slightly above market price, and can hold off from addressing the catching issue for another season.
Otherwise, they get two draft picks to add to their stable of young talent, and everyone is happy.

Great move by the Red Sox. They do not want Varitek for more than a one year deal...
No team in its right mind will sign a washed up Varitek and cough up draft picks....
Borass was outsmarted on this one.

Of course the Sox offer Varitek Arbitration.
1. If he takes it, its one year AND allows the Sox to increase their standing on trade talks for a catcher as it eliminates the "desperate" factor.
2. If he doesn't take it, it puts the negotiation for Tek in the Sox corner b/c it causes a serious deterrent on other teams willing to sign Varitek and give up the draft picks for him.
Basically, Tek gets hurt by this offer if he doesn't take it and the only risk the Red Sox run is getting their Captain for another year at likely 10-20% less then his 2008 salary.
