Ready for more Brian Roberts-to-the-Cubs rumors? Here's a little speculation via Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun:
Schmuck surmises that the Cubs might try to recover some of the offensive production that they lost in Mark DeRosa's departure by once again going after Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts. The Cubs just signed Aaron Miles, who is a fine utility infielder and occasional pinch-hitter, but he'd be an offensive and defensive liability as an everyday starter.

Good luck dealing with the new age front office version of the "Human Rain Delay" in Andy MacPhail.
The guy needs at least 4 months to hammer out a deal so if the Cubs start asking about Roberts now, Chicago might get him by May.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 31, 2008 at 05:57 PM
Peavy or Roberts? Can't have em both and I have a feeling we won't kmow for a very long time...
Posted by: BravoMan | December 31, 2008 at 05:59 PM
I dont know how much of a "liability" Aaron miles is. He hit well over 300 in 400+ AB's.
Hes not going to it for power but he is a scrappy hitter who will get on base.
Posted by: Redbirdfan | December 31, 2008 at 06:00 PM
I knew it they're freeing up space for Brian. I hope somehow McPhail can get Vitters.
Posted by: BaltimoreOrioles21 | December 31, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Hey Tim, which do you want peavy or roberts, or other? And which saga do you hate more.
Posted by: ChiTownCubbies | December 31, 2008 at 06:02 PM
AHHHHHHHH
Posted by: msk86 | December 31, 2008 at 06:03 PM
On behalf of Cub fan nation, I apologize that this "Schmuck" has brought this back on us. Dear Lord in Heaven, please no...just end it now.
Posted by: cycub | December 31, 2008 at 06:03 PM
McPhail gets what he wants.
O's want pitching in any Roberts deal. What pitching can the Cubs spare? The Marquis trade made Marshall unexpendable unless the Cubs acquire another SP, and I don't see where the Cubs have the funds for that (assuming they sign an OF bat).
Posted by: melonis rex | December 31, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Well, there's always Vitters. IDK.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 31, 2008 at 06:05 PM
That's not a rumor. Just some journalist speculating. I thought this site was suppose to be about rumors?
Posted by: E K | December 31, 2008 at 06:05 PM
melonis - I know its not MLB-ready pitching, but if this has any legs whatsoever...does it mean that the end result of dealing Dero was to receive pieces in a Roberts trade? I know the speculation leans towards Peavy, but it is just a thought.
Posted by: cycub | December 31, 2008 at 06:06 PM
"That's not a rumor. Just some journalist speculating. I thought this site was suppose to be about rumors?"
Agreed. This is simply a case of Schumck being a, well you know, schmuck, pun intended. Its funny Paul Sullivan of the Tribune was on sports radio in Chicago today and one of the first things he jokingly said after the Miles signing is that this officialy ends the cubs 2 year pursuit of Roberts. DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE PEOPLE!!!
Posted by: forlife61 | December 31, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Why me? I've been a faithful fan. so wtf?
Posted by: OctoberFlurry | December 31, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Hey Cubs fans can dream. 3 team deal where we get Brian Roberts and Jake Peavy and all we have to do is part with Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, the Sears Tower, and Oprah.
Posted by: Gleebo | December 31, 2008 at 06:15 PM
For anyone wondering Oprah would be starting at SS for the Padres if this goes down. Steadman is rumored to be in the deal as well.
Posted by: Gleebo | December 31, 2008 at 06:16 PM
id rather have peavy and bradley then bradley and roberts.miles is just like theriot.hits for average, not power.i can see them going like theriot,miles,aram,bradley/dunn,soriano,lee,soto,johnson/fukodome.rotation,z,peavy,demp,lilly,harden.bullpen=gaudin,marshall,cotts,vizcaino,gregg,smarj,marmol.bench=gathright,fukodome,k.hill,cedeno,and micah hoffpaur.we would be set.we dont need roberts.
Posted by: cubbie75 | December 31, 2008 at 06:19 PM
I think Richard Simmons would be a better fit for the Padres.
Posted by: wisbrave | December 31, 2008 at 06:19 PM
Fukudome for Roberts.
Have fun.

2009 Projections (BA/OBP/SLG)
Mark De Rosa
Bill James: .273/.354/.430
Marcel: .280/.359/.439
Chone: .263/.346/.398
ZIPS: .283/.362/.440
How will the Cubs replace him?
How about this guy?
Bill James: .288/.363/.447
Marcel: .285/.361/.455
Chone: .270/.351/.422
ZIPS: .268/.340/.418
And who is this wonderful near-minimum salaried soul who bats left-handed and has similar defensive skills as well... who is projected by 3 of 4 systems to out-hit De Rosa in 2009?
You guessed it: Mike Fontenot.
Posted by: Sour Bob | December 31, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Richard Simmons seems like a moneyball kind of guy. Send him to Oakland.
Posted by: Gleebo | December 31, 2008 at 06:21 PM
they could take daley and blago also as throw ins for a bag of balls and a maple bat.
Posted by: cubbie75 | December 31, 2008 at 06:22 PM
No way.
What if there is more to the Marquis trade to the Rox. I wonder if Hendry could pry Brad Hawpe from them. Wouldn't mind another LSU guy at all.
Posted by: matt_g3 | December 31, 2008 at 06:23 PM
I agree that Fontenot should start. I liked everything I saw from him last year and I think Lou should give him a shot at 2B.
Posted by: Y2K_Apocalypse | December 31, 2008 at 06:35 PM
Jim Hendry was on XM Home Plate today and said absolutely no. There have been NO conversations in the past year about Brian Roberts. McPhail said NO. End of story.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | December 31, 2008 at 06:35 PM
@Redbirdfan: You really think Miles would be a good everyday second baseman? As a Cardinals fan, you should know best. The guy has no range and I bet opposing pitchers could find some holes in that "chop" swing he has.
Posted by: Drew Silva | December 31, 2008 at 06:39 PM
I don't see the Cubs giving Miles 2/4.5 when they are trying to cut payroll, already have Theriot, Fontenot and Cedeno AND want to get Roberts. No way. Brian Roberts is not coming.
Posted by: mikebornemann | December 31, 2008 at 06:48 PM
"I don't see the Cubs giving Miles 2/4.5 when they are trying to cut payroll, already have Theriot, Fontenot and Cedeno AND want to get Roberts. No way. Brian Roberts is not coming."
Agreed, lost in all of this is the fact that Roberts has a $9 mil price tag for '09. Not happening.
Posted by: forlife61 | December 31, 2008 at 06:57 PM
I love it when so-called 'journalists' re-hash the same bullshit 'rumors' year in and year out.
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 31, 2008 at 07:12 PM
As a Mets fan i feel as though we should hold onto Luis Castillo (hoping he produces), now that the Cubs may or may not have a vacancy at 2B (whether they acquire Brian Roberts *i dont think so* or go with Miles or Fontenot) it all depends. If they do realize that their is a vacancy and Aaron Miles/Mike Fontenot platoon isnt working, they maybe looking for a 2B who would provide more production (Luis Castillo).... (i am going to stop bc i think you all know where i am going with this.)
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | December 31, 2008 at 07:17 PM
goddamn i love baseball... go cubs!
Posted by: zach837313 | December 31, 2008 at 07:37 PM
no on roberts...yes on peavy. this peavy deal will sneak up... towers wont let anything leak and its gunna hit the league like a ton of bricks.cubs in 09
Posted by: kevinhendrix9 | December 31, 2008 at 07:54 PM
No roberts is not happening but if Jim could seriously pull off Peavy I would be thrilled. I dont care about Milton I really dont want him, but Peavy comes to this team then its the best 1-5 pitching that mlb has seen in decades. tell me one that is better?
Posted by: cubz1life2nd | December 31, 2008 at 08:23 PM
As much as I like BRob, I don't think I can take anymore of these rumors. It seems to me that the Orioles expect the world for 1 year of BRob. They pulled this crap last year and just because they robbed Seattle they feel the need to rob everyone. Let them have their 2 draft picks and maybe it will be of some use by 2013.
Posted by: jonny2fngrs | January 01, 2009 at 12:54 AM
What a terrible offseason this has been for the Cubs so far. Even if they sign Bradley, I can't believe they would commit to 3 years. If he's not hurt, he's getting suspended or pissing someone off. And why trade DeRosa if it isn't to lead to something else? If all it will do is free up space for Bradley, then what did losing Wood do for the team? And the Marquis money? It seems the Cubs are only focused on saving money this offseason, not winning.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | January 01, 2009 at 01:49 AM
Maybe we are looking at this all wrong...Maybe the DeRo trade is to actually give Fontenot the green light to be the 2b with miles being the super sub..
Posted by: Mikey | January 01, 2009 at 08:17 AM
I think within a week we will hear about a big trade. I dont think Hendry would trade DeRo without having something in place already. Obviously this is a pre-cusor so something else. Lou loves DeRo, so I think Hendry has bigger plans already in place. I think Pie is next to go.
It will be a quiet trade whether it be Roberts or Peavy...
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 11:13 AM
I cant decide if I would rather have Roberts or Peavy. If it were more years of Roberts I would say him for sure. Imagine
Roberts
Lee
Ramirez
Bradley
Soriano
Soto
Fukudome
Theriot
Thats scarey
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 11:14 AM
:) HA wouldnt this be nice
Cubs Get Roberts and Peavy
Padres Get Vitters, Olson (from O's), Gaub, Archer, Flaherty
Orioles Get Pie, Fontenot, Guzman, Cedeno, Atkins
Yes we empty the system but we need to win
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 11:28 AM
hey uww1
i would put bradley 3rd, and ramirez 4th.
i some asked if you want peavy or roberts. I'd probably take peavy, only because roberts has 1 year left.
Posted by: ChiTownCubbies | January 01, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Ya I was thinking, maybe we could negotiate with Roberts first before we finalize a trade with them if it going to happen. Our lineup would be awesome with Bradley and Roberts but our rotation would be the best in baseball with Peavy.
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 11:49 AM
i know its rcrazy and never happen. but what if cubs trade for hanram.
cubs get: hanley Rameriz
marlins get: josh vitters, theriot, jay jackson, hart, Jeff stevens, john gaub, Ryan Flaherty.
but wont happen
heres my roberts trade
cubs get: roberts +1million
orioles: Felix pie, hart, Welington Castillo, jeff stevens, +low A player or PTBNL
Posted by: ChiTownCubbies | January 01, 2009 at 11:57 AM
O's dont need Castillo, they have the best catching prospect in baseball. I would say someone more like Atkins or Flaherty instead of Castillo.
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 12:01 PM
This is an interesting thought - Brian Roberts could be a good fit for the Cubs, I've never heard that insight before.
It must be a slow news day if that "journalist" felt compelled to put that insightful comment in ink.

"drew silva"
That "chop" swing is enough to bat at a .290 clip for his career. If pitchers havent figured him out by now, its not likely that playing for the cubs will change that. As far as range, miles had a similar RF to the guy the cubbies seem to want so bad...Brian Roberts.
Hey, if all goes bad, Miles has had a couple of shutout innings under his belt. Make him a pitcher!

PhilsWSChamps, can you confirm this? Did anyone else hear this?
Posted by: Bleacher_Buddha | January 01, 2009 at 03:47 PM
Just because he said that doenst mean it he ment it. Lots of GMs will say they havent contacted someone but they dont want the media to hear about it. You never know whats going on behind closed doors.
Posted by: uww1 | January 01, 2009 at 04:30 PM
Great. Just what we need. More of this nonsense. I am a HUGE Cubs fan and am most likely in the minority but I must say: I don't want Brian Roberts in a Cubs uni. He's above average, and that's it. Why can't the Cubs get above average out of Fontenot next year? I say let Roberts stay in Baltimore through the '09 season and let the Yankees pay 40 mil over 4 years for him. And as I said on the Peavy post earlier, Milehigh, suck it you silly O's fan.
