« Garrett Anderson A Fit For Rays? | Main | Braves, Cardinals Talk Ankiel »
Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald talked to Scott Boras, who said the Tigers' acquisition of Gerald Laird actually improves Jason Varitek's prospects. Perhaps Boras is implying that the Rangers are now less likely to deal an additional catcher. But it's still hard to figure out which team would be willing to give Varitek a decent-sized multiyear deal and surrender a draft pick.
Silverman runs through a slew of catchers the Red Sox like. Jack Magruder says they could be a serious player for Arizona's Miguel Montero.

the only thing that would improve variteks situation is the unexpected deaths of ALOT of catchers at this point

U got it 04forever. I just cannot see any team period signing him that stands to lose a 1st round draft pick at all, nor can see any team giving him anywhere near 6+ million a year and over 2 years guaranteed. Dodgers and Mets are a pipe dream and as can be seen, the Tigers are now off of his list.
Maybe Boras can con Cashman into signing him.

I see it as Jason Varitek will end up taking a one year deal with an option from some team. I was sure at a time that it would be the Red Sox but now as the days move along, I think of it as more and more unlikely.

yeah, but no team will touch him now because of us offering him arbitration, he shoot himself in the foot by not taking it
heres how i see it, the sox will probably go after these guys before they touch tek
Max Ramirez (VERY unlikely)
Taylor Teagarden (unlikely)
Miguel Montero
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
Kelly Shoppach
Jason Varitek
Unless he comes to his senses, i dont want varitek to do this to himself

I guarantee one thing if Theo trades for any young catchers, Varitek will be totally out of the equation. This stuff about mentoring him, makes no sense. Theo will want major league ready catcher. If he is going to give young talented arms away.Another sleeper Josh Bard.

I've been saying Montero for a while now and hope this is the way the Sox go.
Unlike Teargarden or Salty (who are both great catchers) Montero does have MLB experience and I would feel more comfortable with him taking over without Tek around.
Consider Montero has had a chance to work with some amazing pitchers like Webb/Randy Johnson and I just feel as a game caller he is probably well ahead of the other guys.
Additionally, Montero doesn't carry the big name price tag of Teargarden or Salty.
Lastly, Montero might not hit for much average but he has a lot of power.
25yrs old, 3 years MLB experience, 20+HR power and in the Sox lineup (not hitting in front of the pitcher) I could see a .250 avg.
My working trade idea is for the Sox to eat Eric Byrnes bad contract which will allow them to trade very little talent for Montero.
Byrnes is bad but he also fits the bill of a 4th OF the Sox are looking for. Right Handed, can play CF.
This would be a good deal for both clubs as Arizona would then have money freed up to try and resign Dunn; who I feel they didn't offer arbitration too because they were too tied up in payroll thanks to Byrnes bad contract.

"I guarantee one thing if Theo trades for any young catchers, Varitek will be totally out of the equation. This stuff about mentoring him, makes no sense."
I can't imagine a better situation for a young "major league ready" catcher to come into. A time share for both he and varitek this year and next season his eventual takeover would be perfect.
I see a two year deal for tek at 5-7 per and a trade for one of teagarden/salty/montero. As a sox fan i would hate to see tek leave the organization.
with one of the few lineups who can compensate for a lighthitting catcher, (tek batting .250 in the nine slot) can be acceptable if we are grooming a prospect as his backup at the sametime.

and byrnes would be an instant fan favorite here, a perfect fit for this team.

I think you people are over evalutaing the loss of a 1st round pick for a team. Let's look at some of the rumored teams:
1st rnd pick protected (Bottom 15 finish):
Baltimore
Tigers
CIncinnati
Washington
Likely to sign a higher ranked Type A FA (Compensation would be 2nd, 3rd, etc instead of 1st):
Mets (K-Rod)
Phillies (Lowe, Abreu, etc)
