« Royals Designate Jason Smith | Main | Winter Meetings Commentary »
According to Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post, the Nationals are "actively seeking bullpen help." Sheinin confirmed their reported interest in Brian Fuentes and added a new target in Juan Cruz. He says the Nats, like many teams, have an opportunistic approach toward free agent pitching. We haven't heard much about Cruz yet but it doesn't sound like any team is willing to go crazy for Fuentes.

Really? 11+M for a closer when you lost 100+ games?
Cruz makes a lot of sense though if he's around 4-5M.

Hmm, I find it interesting that they traded Rauch last year, he would have been a nice fit.

Sounds like Fuentes may have to lower that 3/33 a bit.

Yes this makes tons of sense, our bullpen is seriously lacking the ability to hold games.
And to the Rauch thing, it was actually a good move making us be able to get Willingham and Olsen.

Hanrahan looked pretty good from what I've seen last year, but he's probably better suited for middle relief/setup work.
Signing Fuentes wouldnt serve much of a point, but Cruz might be a better fit.

I guess you're right in that respect, but you guys didn't really need Willingham -- you already have Milledge, Dukes, and Kearns. Olsen is an arm, but it will be interesting to see if Olsen's 2009 is more like his 2007 season than his 2008 season.

Honestly, if we really need 'pen help, then why don't we just re-sign Chief? He's cheaper and he hasn't ruled out his interest with us.
No problem with Cruz, that would be a good signing.

Milledge, Dukes, and Kearns all got hurt at some point last year for extended periods of time, and Willy Mo Pena is utterly worthless.
