Does anyone have a major league job for Sammy Sosa?
That's the question that he's (still) waiting for the answer to, according to Dominican newspaper Listin Diario (via ESPN.com). "I still don't have an offer and I shouldn't be looking for offers out there," said Sosa, 40, who sat out 2008 after posting a .252/.311/.468 line for the Texas Rangers in 2007. He currently sits at 6th place on the career home run list, with 609.

For some reason, I want Braves to give him an offer at league mininum.

Bwahahahahahahahaha!!!!!
Baseball been berry berry bad to me!
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Sammy is a great player but I dont think he is a real threat anymore
Posted by: Jon | December 25, 2008 at 06:59 PM
Maybe even give him a minor league deal and an invitation to ST.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 06:59 PM
How bout da mets give him a shot @ spring trainin and play him in left..and if he does good..den keep him on da team..
Posted by: letsgomets787 | December 25, 2008 at 07:05 PM
How great would he have been without the 'occasional injections'? He's a joke that has disgraced the game.
Are your Braves that desperate?
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 07:05 PM
perfect counter move for the redsox
Posted by: jedstylesux | December 25, 2008 at 07:10 PM
Sosa was only 'mentioned' in the Mitchell Report. No BALCO, no failed tests, but read between the lines...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 07:23 PM
"Are your Braves that desperate?"
If Braves are desperate, then Giants, Yankees, Astros, Orioles, and etc. Giants signed Bonds. Yankees signed Giambi and Pettitte. Astros signed Pettitte. Orioles signed Jay Gibbons. I can go on, but I don't have that kind of time to do that.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 07:23 PM
I can't really make out your first sentence, but I see where you're going. The guy isn't going to hit 50 home runs anymore, while the above mentioned players (minus Gibbons) can still somewhat produce. Sammy is done.
Your GM should trade for Dye so we can screw you guys again, LOL. I was a little miffed we didn't get JoJo the first time around...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 07:29 PM
I think the Rays should consider signing him to a minor-league deal, or a league minimum, and give him a look in Spring Training. He can't play in the field anymore, but maybe he could platoon DH with Floyd.
Just a thought. I think only AL teams should look at him either as exclusive a DH, or platooning DH/LF. He isn't good anywhere else and would be a huge liability on the field (I feel like).
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 25, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Sosa's career has been going downhill ever since the corked bat incident. Not only that, but since that HR race with McGwire... McGwire got 70 HR, and everybody says he took steroids. Sosa got 66, and everybody assumes that he wouldn't have gotten close unless he had taken steroids, also.
Guilt by association, not innocence until proven guilty.
Posted by: Ksy92003 | December 25, 2008 at 07:38 PM
"I still don't have an offer and I shouldn't be looking for offers out there,".......Great attitude Sammy. Its a shock no team wants to go near you with a "all for the team" attitude like that.
Combine that with the fact that he is 40 and can't juice anymore and you have your answer to why nobody is giving him a shot.
Posted by: yanks09 | December 25, 2008 at 07:40 PM
"J.P. GET ON IT....SIGN HIM TO A MINOR LEAGUE CONTRACT...."....THE GUY HIT 600 HRs...HES STILL GOT SOME POP AT 40...."
Who am i kidding....J.P is just about the stupidest GM a Team could ask for....
Posted by: jays4life | December 25, 2008 at 07:42 PM
"The guy isn't going to hit 50 home runs anymore, while the above mentioned players (minus Gibbons) can still somewhat produce."
If you call Pettitte and his almost 5 ERA still producing, have fun with that.
"Your GM should trade for Dye so we can screw you guys again, LOL."
If you call getting Flowers for Vazquez. Flowers was thee only decent player you got from that trade.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 07:44 PM
Saying Sosa cheated really isn't fair.
I mean I'd say the odds are like 1 in 50 that he hit all those home runs naturally, you don't go from good to historically great in a single offseason.
But still, the man was never actually caught and there's no legitimate proof that he took performance enhancing drugs.
Innocent until proven guilty, regardless of how much you wanna call Sammy a cheater.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 25, 2008 at 07:45 PM
Pettitte would be a decent number 5, but I don't give a rat's ass about the Yankees and their problems.
And as far as Flowers, you just made my point for me...have fun with Javy and his mental issues.
Please try to finish sentences also...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 07:48 PM
Pettitte still can pitch. He isn't bad at all. Much better than many other #4 and #5 pitchers.
As a Dodgers fan, I would hope that Colletti looks into getting him. Having a 4.54 ERA, with 204IP, in the AL Beast is pretty decent by my estimates. And it wouldn't surprise me if he went to the NL West (probably the weakest offensive division in baseball...I'll admit that) and put up a line of 15-10, 3.85 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 200IP. That's reasonable enough. Plus he knows Joe Torre, and Joe Torre knows him. What more can you ask for? Better than Jon Garland or Randy Johnson in my opinion - one is a worse pitcher at a higher asking price, and the other is old, terrific, and his health is completely unpredictable (which we don't need in our rotation).
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 25, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Guys on the Mitchell Report who have/had MLB jobs in '08.
Giambi, Sheffield, Brian Roberts, Jack Cust, Andy Pettitte, Gregg Zaun, Ron Villone, Ryan Franklin, Miguel Tejada, Jerry Hairston Jr., Eric Gagne, Paul LoDuca, Matt Herges, Derrick Turnbow, Rick Ankiel, Paul Byrd, Troy Glaus, Jose Guillen, Gary Matthews Jr., Scott Schowenweiss,
So there are guys who were affiliated with the Mitchell Report on 18 of 30 teams last/this year (including all teams that a player was traded to, etc.).
Seriously. Someone bring him in on a cheap deal with an ST invite, and they could be amazed. Getting cheap DH production is easy, guys.

Good call Mr. Blake.
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 07:56 PM
"And as far as Flowers, you just made my point for me...have fun with Javy and his mental issues."
I was against the trade before it happened, and I am still against it now.
MrBlake14,
If you call $16 million for a #4 or #5 pitcher, and is also getting "old," you need some help.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 07:58 PM
Oh it's not gonna be all that bad, he's going to the NL. Javy isn't the worst pitcher you could have picked up. He can light dudes up, but just seems to either A. get easily frazzled, B. lack any sort of confidence with men on base, or C. doesn't handle pressure situations well.
You guys will like him, trust me.

"If you call $16 million for a #4 or #5 pitcher, and is also getting "old," you need some help."
I forgot "not high" in that "sentence."

How about Braves send Vazquez and Boone back, a long with Locke and Rohrbough for Buehrle? Will also include Medlen for Dye.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 08:09 PM
No one wants to sign you, Sammy, so face it - your tarnished career is over. You cheated, you were a self-grandulizing egomaniac, and now you're old and haven't played in awhile. Other than that, what a catch you would be for some team, eh?
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 25, 2008 at 08:16 PM
rememberthecoop,
Where's the proof of him cheating, besides with a corked bat.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 08:20 PM
A team could do a lot worse than having Petitte in their starting rotation, that's for sure. I think he still has something left & is worth the money for one year.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 25, 2008 at 08:20 PM
Now that would be something, LOL.
Medlen and Rohrbough are intriguing, but gimme JoJo.
Buehrle will probably be ours until he goes home to roost with St. Louis near the end of his career.
Silly boy.
Tell me about Lillibridge...I know Williams has had his eye on him for a while now, but I know nothing about him...
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 08:22 PM
BravesRocks, what are you expecting, a signed affadavit? Sometimes you have to use your power of reasoning. The subjective evidence includes him getting suddenly huge, combined with going from 30-something to 60-something homers per year, then forgetting how to speak English at the congressional hearing. And, once testing started, suddenly getting physically small again and unable to hit homers. That's enough for me.
Posted by: rememberthecoop | December 25, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Thanks Pariah, I just don't get why people say things like that without investigating or backing up their claims. Especially bashing a pitcher who pitches in as tough a division as the AL East.
Oh, and Pettitte also won 14 games in a year where the Yankees offense was oddly quiet and not tip top.
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 25, 2008 at 08:26 PM
I thought he forgot how to speak English?
Posted by: beeniez | December 25, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Sammy did balloon to cartoon-like proportions nearly overnight, and then shrunk just as fast.
Again, NO proof whatsoever, but come on. Here in Chicago, it was a WIDELY discussed topic for quite some time.
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 08:27 PM
Just kidding that's in Spanish.
Posted by: beeniez | December 25, 2008 at 08:27 PM
Last time I checked BravesRockmySocks, Pettitte wasn't demanding $15 or $16 million, and I never suggested he was. If he is in fact demanding that, then yes, I agree with you. $15 million is not worth it.
But at around $8-$12 million, for a one-year deal, and the innings and stats he'd give us, I'd call it a smart move. The Dodgers need an innings eater to replace Lowe, and Pettitte fits the bill.
And if "old" is part of the equation, look at Derek Lowe and chastise him for being one year younger than Pettitte and putting up "easy" numbers in the weak NL West. Sheesh.
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 25, 2008 at 08:28 PM
Part-time Pariah, is Mark Buehrle available?
Posted by: MrBlake14 | December 25, 2008 at 08:30 PM
I don't have a direct line to Mr. Williams, but I am thinking that Buehrle won't be available anytime soon. He's a HUGE fan favorite and a goddamn workhorse.
I would HATE to see the man go, but he has repeatedly expressed an interest to pitch for St. Louis (hometown) eventually.

Melonis Rex, Outside of Brian Roberts and Rick Ankiel, just how many of those guys are worthy of roster spots on contending teams even? Some (Byrd and Petite) say they used them to help overcome injures and some for who the heck knows for what reason, yet guys like Sosa we are fairly certain used them in extreme amounts for greed and fame to hit massive amounts of home runs. Who wants an old guy that cannot play the outfield, can no longer run, PLUS brings the HGH tag with them to a young team like the Rays? He is better left to oblivion like the other massive shooter Bonds.
Posted by: johns | December 25, 2008 at 08:43 PM
give it up sammy. its all over guy
Posted by: Johnny Cash | December 25, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Its not the fact that Sosa may or may not have taken steroids. Its the fact that he is a self centered player who is only out there for himself, not the team. Just look at his attitude right now about teams not wanting to sign him, he is a joke, and would be a cancer to a team. When he got another shot with the Rangers he was playing to put up stats rather than help the team win. Who wants a washed up 40 year old player (who probably took roids) with a bad attitude that will not help develop younger players.
Look at Greg Maddux, even though he was older and not the same pitcher he was still a great presence in the clubhouse which is why teams still wanted him to pitch.
Look what a Bind Manny is in right now trying to find a team to put up with his nonsense....and this is one of the best hitters (if not thee best hitter) in the game right now.

Good point Yanks, a lot of times, those older players are signed to provide a mentor role, someone for the younger players to look up to and learn from. What could Sosa/Manny possibly provide, other than 'Pissing off your manager 101'?
Posted by: part-time pariah | December 25, 2008 at 09:11 PM
Sosa roids up, takes a year off to clean it out of system, plays for Texas, takes another year off to roid up and clean out again, comes back asking for a job.
Posted by: Devlsh | December 25, 2008 at 09:17 PM
"takes another year off to roid up and clean out again, comes back asking for a job."
If you actually look at that article from ESPN, it cleary states that Sosa would of played last year, if he would of accepted a part time job, but he wanted a starting job, and $7 million.
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 25, 2008 at 09:37 PM
I say give Sammy a chance. In 07 with Texas he hit .252 (not great), but with 21 hr, 92 rbi in only 412 at bats. He took a good amount of walks also. When texas decided to put him on the bench and give the younger guys a shot, his production died. Any smart GM should give this guy a shot.
American league teams should be especially interested. Kansas City, Minnosota, Oakland, the Mariners and Jays have all been rumoured in talks with Sammys agent.
Give the guy a shot. Let him DH/RF for a full year. He'll hit 30+ homeruns, 110 RBI's.
Just because a guy isn;t on the "juice" doesn't mean he still can't play, look at jason giambi
Posted by: matt | December 25, 2008 at 09:38 PM
Any teams that needs a DH should sign Sosa and Bonds. Split the time between them and maybe just maybe watch them excel!!!
Posted by: Tough | December 25, 2008 at 09:42 PM
I still think Braves should give Sosa a shot. In 2007 or 2008 offseason, writers' wanted Braves to give Bonds a shot. I really don't see a difference. Put Sosa in RF, Francouer in CF, and Blanco and Diaz can platoon in LF. Sosa is righthanded and is good against lefthanders.

So pariah you seem to be pretty angry at Sosa that he used performance enhancing drugs. You also seem to be pretty happy that you "screwed" the Braves by acquiring Tyler Flowers. Just remember that Flowers was suspended 50 games for performance enhancing drugs. Do a little research before you take a moral stand against Sosa, and then praise Tyler Flowers.

Hahaha, the only thing worse than Francoeur in RF is Francoeur in CF and Sosa in RF. Also, lol @ the idea that Sosa = Bonds.
Posted by: iamnobody | December 25, 2008 at 10:43 PM
M'eh. I didn't really 'praise' Flowers, I'm just glad to have him considering the sad state our farm was in. I am very aware he tested positive, it was all over the Chicago media when we traded for him.
He's young enough to have learned his lesson(at least I hope so), and seems to have enough natural ability/upside to make him worthwhile, whereas Sosa (depending on who you ask) has flaunted the system for a long time.
Thanks anyways.

Posted by: metsftw | December 25, 2008 at 11:16 PM
scribbletone: just using a corked bat should be enough eveidence that he is a cheater. Most people don't remember Sosa on the White Sox it seems but he was a lot smaller, leaner and was a different player. You don't just get as big as he did so quickly naturally. It should be a mute point anyhow since he is over the hill and washed up. There are too many other FA options better. Might be a short term attendance draw on a team with no hope in 09.
metsftw: I HOPE you are kidding but..... Quicker recovery time helps any athlete. Added strength helps any athlete. "But they still have to hit the ball." Well my friend, it is proven that one of the first things steroids can do for someone is increase their vision. I kind of think that helps you hit the ball better considering that when any good player is on a hot streak they (and announcers, coaches etc say this as well) say that they are "seeing the ball really well right now"

Steroids don't necessarily enhance your vision. The main benefit in that area is an improvement in hand-eye coordination.
HGH is another story, however.

maybe if he could remember how to speak English in front of a grand jury of a steroids hearing he could be trusted, maybe if he didn't suck at playing the field he could join the NL but this limits his choices, maybe if he didn't have the same perception that Bonds has.. a person who never was caught using steroids, but is and will forever be linked to the steroid era because his body tripled in size.
haha oh and - Steroids don't necessarily enhance your vision. The main benefit in that area is an improvement in hand-eye coordination. haha did you get this info from wikipedia?

Sorry, bub, even if you wanna make fun of my squad's 40-man roster, saying that Sheff, Tejada, Cust, GMJ, Guillen, Byrd, and Glaus couldn't cut it on someone else's team is a bit of a stretch.
I'll always have a little love for Slammin Sammy because of how he always sprinted out onto the field. Clearly, he loved the game a little too much, but I still respect the hell outta him.
Posted by: bucs_lose_again | December 26, 2008 at 02:53 AM
"'01 slg percentage: .737
There."
So, that don't prove anything. Gehrig had four seasons with a SLG % over .700. Does that make him a steriod user?
Posted by: BravesRockMySocks | December 26, 2008 at 07:18 AM
"Sheff, Tejada, Cust, GMJ, Guillen, Byrd, and Glaus"
Let me see... Sheff has done a tremendous job under pressure hasn't he on good teams right? Like that talented Tigers team, the total collapse of the '04 Yankees team by running off his mouth when the Yanks were up 3-0, then collapsing and losing the next 4 games and the series inwhich many attributed his idiotic mouthing off as one of the causes to get the Sox rolling.. yeah, he is valuable, especially with hit nice bat the last couple years.
Tejada is a good commodity also, so much so that no one wants to touch him this off season, even though Houston is willing to give away for virtually free to anyone willing to pay his 13 million dollar 2009 contract.. Let's not forget that no one knows how old the guy is and he even lied on his legal documentation papers for residency. I'd trust this guy to be a good teammate :-(
You got me on Glaus, thought he was still under his huge contract with SL, though he is brittle, with good power.
As far as Paul Byrd, am glad he is gone from Boston and am a Sox (1 of several teams a fan of) follower, he is a 4-5 starter on a .500 team and about it, an innings eater that can have a good season, or not. I would not be adverse to him coming back, but as a long guy.
Cust, Giambi? Those are guys for sub-.500 teams, Cust is a DH that is an adventure to watch in the OF with 1 decent season and Giambi is a toaster. Both should be fun to watch in Oakland, especially if both end up in Oakland and on sharp liners down the right field line. Can see the highlight reels already with mis adventures occurring on the field.
THEN.. There is the shadow of steroids and HGH that follows each and every one of these gentleman that some teams just do not want. How many will crash all at once like Gagne did afterwards (if steroids was the cause of his crash) or Brad Wilderson who also had tremendous power throughout the early to mid 2000's, yeat has totally crashed since testing in earnst began and is not mentioned here?
This may be just my opinion, but no thanks to these guys (except Robersta and maybe Ankiel) for these others who just do not bring much of anything to the plate that cannot be gotten elsewhere from clean players.
Posted by: johns | December 26, 2008 at 07:20 AM
If he's so desperate for a job then why didn't he accept the offer from the Nats last year?
I imagine he's too banged up to play OF, so he should go to a team that needs a DH. Tampa, anyone?
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | December 26, 2008 at 08:43 AM
In 2007, Sosa hit lefties to the tune of .328/.410/.613. He's helpless against righties and their breaking balls away, but can still destroy lefties.
Posted by: Teetz1 | December 26, 2008 at 08:53 AM
Okay I've got it. Let's sign BOTH Sosa & Bonds. Sosa can play RF, Bonds in LF, and Frenchy can man center for a bit. Beyond that, let's go ahead & try to sign Pettite & Gagne as well. I'm thinking if we're going to play the 'roids card we REALLY play our hand. Sure, we'd have probably the worst defensive outfield of all times. Absolutely we'd have the range of 2 refrigerators roaming our outfield, but come on! We're talking 1300+ HRs.
Posted by: ksesxe | December 26, 2008 at 08:54 AM
The whole Sosa thing with forgetting how to speak English is not true. We all know he use to talk to reporters after the game and talk in english, he did not speak it well because of his accent but he did speak it. but the thing is when he was at Congress he said he didnt speak it very well, because he did not want to say something and have Congress think they heard another word. Is accent sometimes made it sound like he said another word but didnt. so I can understand the whole Congress thing I dont speak english very well so that there was no misunderstanding. and the whole corked bat thing, still does not prove anything to this day. some scientists say it helps some say it doesn't. there is no evidence to suggest that it helps.

Pirates need a right handed bat..Have an outfield spot open..It could be a "quick fix" until Tabata or Pearce are Ready..Not to mention will sell a couple of more seats in right field. right field in Pittsburgh might be a nice send off to someone who idolized Clemente..

Good point about Clemente. One of my favorites of all time.

"Cust, Giambi? Those are guys for sub-.500 teams, Cust is a DH that is an adventure to watch in the OF with 1 decent season and Giambi is a toaster. Both should be fun to watch in Oakland, especially if both end up in Oakland and on sharp liners down the right field line. Can see the highlight reels already with mis adventures occurring on the field."
Cust is not an OF and has adventures in the field, you are correct, but he is a very effective DH. The A's lineup sucked, and he still produced well. He hit well in a pitcher's paradise as the only power threat in one of the worst offensive lineups in MLB (in '07, the A's were semi-decent, and Cust had some help from Swisher, but not much else). Oh. The only two seasons in which he has gotten more than 100 MLB ABs('07 and '08) have both been solid.
And, since 14 teams in MLB utilize a DH regularly, being a DH means the player can still play ball.
The A's shouldn't sign Giambi for that exact reason. The DH spot belongs to Cust.

Someone help me out. Back in 99 McGwire had a bottle of Andro in his locker and I remember a week later Sosa had a different body enhanceing pill that he showed off. What was he taking that season?
