On this day 22 years ago the Cubs traded Ron Cey to the A's. Cey, a six-time All-Star, would only play 45 games for Oakland. "The Penguin" would retire following the 1987 season. With two weeks to go until pitchers and catchers report, teams are still finalizing their 2009 rosters. Let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere...
- Baseball Handyman examines the bench constructed by the Mets this off-season and how unimpressive it is.
- Jorge Says No! re-examines the market for Manny Ramirez.
- My Pinstripes takes a look at the current state of the Yankees roster and how it can still change before opening day.
- River Ave. Blues says Adam Dunn is a "tempting target" for the Yankees and should remain on their radar until he signs.
- Bucco Blog sees the Pirates giving arbitration-eligible players long-term deals that do not buy out free agency years and feels the team is only attempting to keep payroll as low as possible and not trying to build a competitive team.
- Astros Country says Jake Peavy being traded to the Cubs would be the worst thing that could happen to the Astros this offseason.
- Braves Blast says that losing John Smoltz and Chipper Jones in consecutive seasons is not an option for Braves fans.
- Batter's Box ranks the GMs statistically with Andrew Friedman coming out on top.
- UmpBump is wrapping up their "Hot Offseason Action" series looking at what each team did to improve this off-season.
- MLB Notebook takes a look at a few signings and compares them to the player they replaced.
- Midwest Sports Fans discusses Rich Hill's struggles.

The Cey trade 22 years ago was from the Cubs to the Athletics.

It must be really depressing to be an Astros fan...bad team, worse minor league system.

thanks. hard to not think of Cey as a Dodger

an astros blog has a picture of steve bartman on its homepage?

Cey was swapped for Luis Quinoles, who had been with Oakland for 8 days. Quinoles had 101 medicore/horrific ABs for the Cubs, Cey had 104 with Oakland. Cey still showed he could hit too, OBP .359 and OPS+ 107, sadly in those days batting average was god and he decided he couldnt handle being a .220 hitter. Sad but true.
(yes I just analyzed the Ron Cey to Oakland 1987 trade in 2009, and Im most likely the first and only person to do so since 1987.)

I use to grimace watching Ron 'The Penguin' Cey or Billy 'Buck' Buckner run out a ground ball. They were gamers though.

It must be really sad to be an Astros fan if your Astros blog has a Cubs picture and you're whining about the Cubs getting Peavy.
"Like it wasn't bad enough that the Astros had to run into C.C. Sabathia, Ben Sheets, Carlos Zambrano (and his stupid, tainted no-hitter)."
Did middle school let out early today? This is some fine trollin'

Eh, it hasn't been bad to be a astros fan. Yeah the farm is weak as of right now but I do trust Wade and the Astros scouts to scout good players and draft them. And if they continue to sign about all of the draftees the farm shall be better in a few years.
As of the overall years, they have been competitive, have gone to the playoffs. And so on...
And for Peavy. Yeah that would make an excellent rotation... But the Cubs also have an injury prone rotation.Especially Big Z "dead arm" the last 2 yrs... It can't be a good sign. Also Peavy has had the luxuary of Petco park.... He wouldn't be able to put up any of those 2.70 ish era at wrigley... And there is speculation that he is going to need TJS....

Jake Peavy is Barry Zito 2.0.
2009:$8 M
2010:$15M
2011:$16M,
2012:$17M,
13:$22M club option ($4M buyout)
(from cot's)

Peavy is making $11 mil next season

Wow. Those photos of Rich Hill are pretty persuasive. I hope the Cubs haven't screwed up here.

Nice blog...not! Is it possible to come up with a semi-original "rip" on the Cubs organization? 100 years??? You've got to be kidding me with that garbage. So many excuses for the no-hitter, but no one talks about how the Astro hitters missed their fans so much they couldn't make contact.
Posted by: rockstrongo | January 30, 2009 at 04:16 PM
Yeah, the Astro blog is some good trolling.
The Cubs and Astros can't have a five game series because 1) the Astros aren't going to the playoffs, 2) NL Central rivals can't play in the NLDS and the NLCS is a 7 game series, and 3) the Astros aren't going to the playoffs.
Why did MLBTR think that blog was worth sharing with us?

Im not going to get in a debate over the Ike situation, it's over... Hopefully it won't happen again.... And if it does hopefully selig won't put it at "Wrigley North"
Posted by: elcaballofan4eva | January 30, 2009 at 04:42 PM
And two, no one knows who is going to the WS.....or the playoffs... The Tigers were expected to go to the WS, the cubs were expected to beat the dodgers.
Both the Cubs and Astros can hope that all their players can stay healthy.. Nevermind that's all the clubs.
Posted by: elcaballofan4eva | January 30, 2009 at 04:48 PM
Exactly. People should've directed the blame soley on Selig, not Z or any Cub or their fans. Oh I forgot though, we haven't one in 100 years...hahaha!

The more I think about it the more I would love to have Manny and Dunn on the Dodgers. Dunn could provide the protection that Manny needs. No one could quite fill that role last year (Loney, Ethier, Martin, etc.). A 3-4-5 of Ethier, Manny, Dunn would mash. I would expect about 75-100 HRs out of just those three (Ethier: 20-25, Manny: 30-35, Dunn: 40--of course). Damn that would be sweet! Not to mention the rest of our offense. That would have to make us one of the best offensive teams in the NL, which would be more than enough to cover up the loss of pitching, and easily net us the NL West. I just wish there was a way to make it happen!

So are you sitting Loney or Kemp?
Posted by: jrfukudome | January 30, 2009 at 06:39 PM
Scott,
I'm with you on the GM rankings. Kinda like college football coaches, a GM probably deserves at least three full years on the job before you can really determine how he ranks against his peers.

"So are you sitting Loney or Kemp?"
Obviously that's why it most likely won't happen. Based on 2008 performance, if I had to choose one to sit it would be Loney. I feel that he has a high ceiling but not nearly as high as Kemp's (plus who would play CF). A lot of Dodger fans are calling for Loney to be traded for pitching and then sign Dunn and Manny. I'm not quite that willing to give him up, but I would love to have a line up like this:
Furcal
J. Martin (as his jersey will now say)
Ethier
Manny
Dunn
Kemp
Blake
DeWitt
Probably one of the best Dodger lineups in the last 20 or so years! As far as overall ability (all aspects of hitting, fielding, etc.) I feel that Loney has the potential become a better overall player than Dunn, but he'll never have the power that Dunn has. I don't feel that Loney should be starting 1B in 2010 if he doesn't have a better year than last year. I'm not saying that he is bad, but just that I (as well as most other Dodger fans) expected more from him. He still deserves another chance, in my opinion, but if he is going to be traded why not do it when he still has value? Oh well.

Interesting read on Rich Hill and it's makes a lot of sense. If his center of balance is off or disturbed I could see how that would throw off his control.
I think it's too late for him as a Cub though, especially if a deal for Peavy ever goes through. The problem is that the Cubs are going to trade him and get pennies on the dollar. If he gets his control straightened out he is definitely a middle of the rotation pitcher for 4-5 years or more. Baltimore is going to get him, straighten him out and have a useful starter, essentially for free. I like Hendry well enough but I do think he sells low on young players too often without giving them enough of a chance first.

How about Rich Hill to the Indians for Ande Marte? Is Marte enough? They hooked up for DeRosa, I'd love to see the Tribe pick up Hill.
Posted by: Furrski | January 30, 2009 at 11:49 PM
First, Marte is out of options himself, the exact reason we are in a position where we are willing to give players away now.
Second, we have no need for Marte, making the first point that much more important.
Third, nothing is really 'not enough' since Hill would be free on the waiver wire if we didn’t trade him now. The only thing needed is for the offer to beat that of the other team(s) interested. If you feel Marte is worth more than a PTBNL, then you personally feel he is enough. Only Hendry himself would be able to answer the question for certain, but one thing is for sure – Marte is better than receiving the whole nothing we are lined up to get if he isn’t dealt soon. If Marte was the only offer received, Marte it would be – Marte would then be peddled for a PTBNL himself though.

So, yeah, you have no need for Marte, I get it. If Indians dont trade him, he's on the wire, too, obviously. I realize he's not worth anything and was just throwing it out there. As an Indians fan, I'll say I wouldn't mind taking Hill. He can be our 5th.
