« Nationals Showing Interest In Nady, Swisher | Main | Braves Sign Kenshin Kawakami »
In a preview of his Sunday column, Tom Haudricourt reports the Brewers aren't likely to sign a big ticket free agent starting pitcher this offseason.
As an indication of just how unlikely that signing might be, Haudricourt has a quote from Doug Melvin; says the Brewers GM, "I haven't even talked to Scott Boras."
At the very least, that quote would appear to explicitly eliminate Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez from the Brewers' shopping list.

Does that mean they wont bring back Sheets?

I love when writers for teams point out the obvious. Did anyone really think the Brewers would call Boras? The only reason to call him would be to lock up Fielder.

Is Sheets a "big bucks SP"?

Hey, that's good news in at least one respect:
It means that the Mariners and their new GM, Jack Zdurencik can call up his old buddy Doug Melvin and offer up Jarrod Washburn--even if it is for pennies on the dollar, so to speak. ;)

No surprise here. Sheets could still come back, though I would assume, at a low rate/short term deal.

wonder how long til everyone quits talking to Boras?

Apparently the Brewer's strategy was Sabathia or Bust.

What is it about Boras that everyone hates? He is sneaky, smart, loves $ and does everything he is supposed to do for his clients.
The issue is really with the players that choose him as their agent. The players want $$. Boras does not force any team to pay his demands. If some team wants to then that is their decision.
If I needed an agent I am pretty sure I would see if Boras wanted yet another client.

TheTEEJ, when he stops representing the best players, people will stop talking to him

Who really cares about the Brewers anyway!!! hahaha im kidding.. Bring back sheets and they will do fine.

Assuming Sheets signs elsewhere... what other choices do the Brewers have? Their top 2 in their rotation gone(like I said, assuming somebody else wises up and signs Sheets), and who else to sign? Garland? Wolf?

Limits them to
Looper & Sheets
Outside possibility of Garland.

If the Brewers don't re-sign Sheets, then I'm sure Melvin will explore the trade market a little further. Rumors I am hearing from within the Brewers organization is that Sheets' injury is more severe than thought. I've been hearing that his rotator cuff is shot and he is trying to cover it long enough to sign with someone...so maybe that's why the Brewers and virtually no one else is going after him.
Now...those are definitely rumors, but from people on the inside. But if that were true, why wouldn't he have simply accepted the Brewers arbitration offer? He would have gotten good money through that. Plus, his signing anywhere will be dependant on passing a physical. So I don't know what to think. I would actually like to see us go get him again, pending that physical. Then I think the rotation would be pretty tough.

me,as a cubs fan, hope the brew crew get nobody.i like the way your team is now, hitting and no pitching.o yea,i forgot.they signed the all time saves leader.he will collect those against the pirates and reds.not us,because we are going to rape them this year.i can hardly wait.

hey cubbie75... you're exactly the reason why Cub fans have the reputation they do, arrogant for no good reason considering you have never won anything...I find it funny that Cubs fans think they can talk crap and actually believe they have something to back it up with. Even as bad as the Brewers were in the 90s and until a few years ago...at least we've been to a world series in the past half-century

Yeah, Joey, Brewers fans have all kinds of reason to be arrogant! Saying the Cubs will have no problem at all with the Brewers next season is not arrogance. The Brewers just lost their best pitcher (CC).As for their next ace (Sheets), the only thing he does consistently is get injured. The Brewers will be lucky to knock St.Louis out of third place. Perhaps someday Milwaukee will have real fans, but until then, please quit whining about Cubs fans.

i never once said that the cubs aren't a tough team, and they're certainly better than the brewers next year, but Cubs fans have absolutely nothing to brag about. Ill be the first to admit the Brewers haven't had too much success...which is my point...at least the Brewers, who have long been considered a subpar team have been to the world series in recent history
Posted by: JoeyT107 | January 12, 2009 at 02:16 AM
The Brewers went to a world series 27 years ago. By that logic, Cubs fans should say "hey at least the Cubs won a world series". We don't because its incredibly irrelevant! The fact is, the Brewers had their chance last year, that ship has sailed.Cubbie75 is just saying that the Cubs obviously have a much better team and should have no problem beating the Brewers who won't have as good a team as last year. If thats arrogance, I'll take it any day over ignorance!
