« Phillies' Romero Suspended 50 Games | Main | Rays, Burrell Agree To Two-Year Deal »
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals signed lefty reliever Royce Ring to a one-year deal. He joins fellow southpaw imports Charlie Manning and Trever Miller. Ring hasn't really shut down lefthanded hitters in recent years.

Sounds like a Dave Duncan project and Spring Training Invitee filler. Seriously, this is nothing more than the D'angelo Jimiez, Juan Gonzalez, and Cliff Politte signings of last year...nothing serious.

WOW! 8+ ERA! This should make our bullpen complete! lol

Does anyone know if this is a major league deal, or just a spring invite/minor league deal?

Sadly, he is a former #1 draft pick for the White Sox. Moral of the story: never, NEVER draft a college reliever in the first round.

I'll always remember Ring as the Moneyball guy the Sox took over Blanton. How'd that work out?

Will Ohman, Mo! Have you heard of him?
This is silly.

Note to self:
1. have lots of sons.
2. make them all throw left-handed.
3. ignore the fans.
4. make bank.

i didnt even know he was a free agent lol
makes me wonder whats going on with ohman he was supposed to be the top left handed reliever

As a Braves fan who watched him pitch the last couple of years, I'll say "good luck." He always LOOKS like a guy who could shut lefties down like a madman, but lefties and righties always seem to crush him.

He is related to someone with the White Sox somehow. I think he is like Kenny Williams' nephew, or maybe he was Jerry Manuals nephew or something like that.

one or two more no name free agents and we should be all set! Aggressive offseason as promised.
Posted by: inthecards | January 05, 2009 at 03:16 PM
Righties kill him. KILL.
He had some great moments against lefties, but couldn't maintain consistency.

You people are crazy heres my prediction for 09 for Royce
9-0
1.99 era
84 k's
i guarantee it
NOT...lol...he will be crushed by righties and vice-versa for lefties

Doubt they gave him a major league contract, so this is a pretty good move, he can be nasty on Lefties when he is on. Just don't let the boy face any Righties, his 3/4 delivery makes him very easy for them to pick up.

Joecoolman says he is related to the white sox in some manner. Maybe mo is just softening them up for a trade for Jenks.

This guy solves all of our problems, no reason to go after anymore bullpen help after this signing!
Posted by: CardinalFaninIL | January 05, 2009 at 03:41 PM
Why was this guy a first round pick?
Just curious, he seems like your garden variety LOOGY. Did he have great stuff in college, it just seems bizarre he was once a highly touted player.

"Sadly, he is a former #1 draft pick for the White Sox. Moral of the story: never, NEVER draft a college reliever in the first round."
Devine worked out pretty well.
Well, for the A's at least.

Mo is working on something else.....right? has to be....right? we cannot be content with the team we have now while sitting on 10-12 mil

I guess if we're just going to hold onto the money this wouldn't be a bad time to get Alberts extension done!
Posted by: stlcards16 | January 05, 2009 at 04:20 PM
The name Royce Ring reminds me of the sad fact that Kenny Williams thought Carl Everett was a better center fielder than Aaron Rowand.... ouch.

Thanks for picking up the tab St. Louis

Bigpat - "Why was this guy a first round pick?"
Like I said, he is related to somebody in the White Sox personel, or at least at that time.
Posted by: JoeCoolMan24 | January 05, 2009 at 09:19 PM
Ok, I was a little off. Ring was the cousin of then White Sox pitcher Bill Simas. I thought he was related to a person of more importance, but at least my memory was close enough.

I heard GM-Moz say last night "we plan to make some moves, although I think we have a contender rostered already". His first was obviously not earth shattering. But hey, we're used to that.
