« Phillies Sign Marcus Giles | Main | Jason Giambi Reaches Agreement With A's »
From mlb.com, the M's have signed right-handed reliever Tyler Walker to a one-year deal. Contract details have yet to be announced, per club policy. In a release put out by the team, GM Jack Zduriencik said:
"Tyler is a pitcher we had identified early on as a guy who could help us in the bullpen. He has the ability to pitch in any role: middle relief, set-up and he has experience as a closer."
Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times shares some positive opinion of Walker.

Good luck. He was really really bad last year. It's too bad cause he is a really good guy.
My guess is he will be DFA'd by July.

Have fun with that Mariner fans. He sweats like a dog even if its snowing. He has OK stuff but he is not consistant. He starts off strong and by mid May he is just terrible. If you paid anything over 750,000 K you got ripped. Again, have fun with that. He was one of the worst arms on our Giants bullpen that consisted of many bad arms.

Whatever, I'll take a guy who held righties to a .186 average for our bullpen. Used in the right situation I don't see how he could be a bad signing.

Gord
trust us Giants fans its not a good signing
way too inconsistent
he was the reason Tim Lincecum did not win 19 or 20 games last season

While i am glad the Giants have moved on from him, I think people are a little too harsh. Tyler Walker had a bad, very bad season last year for the giants. But that doesn't mean he can't excel given the right role and in a new organization.
Walker actually had a decent run for the Giants. He stepped up in 2005 and had 23 saves when no one else could, doesn't mean he was a closer though. He had Tommy John surgery in 2006 and bounced back very strong in late 2007. In 15 games, he only gave up 2 runs and had a WHIP of 1.11. he doesn't strike alot of guys out but he can get outs. He's only 32 so he should still have a few decent seasons in him even if he can't control his weight. He works very hard and has passion for the game. Not many want to win more than him.
I think Walker's problem here is he had succeeded in the past in key situations, had a strong late 2007 that showed he may be able to do it again, and then Bochy kept plugging him into that set up role. The Giants also had such a horrendous bullpen until late last season that they didn't feel they had anyone else to turn to. If the Mariners don't use him as the 8th inning guy, or maybe even the 7th, they will be just fine. Who knows, maybe he'll turn it around

While not a great signing for the Mariners, he will fill Sean Green's shoes nicely.
The guy kills rightys and is horrible against leftys. You SF fans say how bad a year he had.. it all stems from 16 bad innings against left handed batters. His BB and K rates were still good against the LHers though. So thats a positive sign.
With a little luck, he could turn out a really decent year in Seattle.

The M's are not contending next year.
There is zero, repeat, ZERO reason to spend money on good relievers when your team is not in contention because you can easily and cheaply rebuild a bullpen in one offseason, while you probably can't do that with your lineup/rotation.
So, signings like these are ideal for the M's. Get some guys with decent upside for cheap and see what they do.

Walker has decent upside and we're only paying him 750K I see no problem in that... M's are a surefire .500 team this year for sure and we are going to be competing in a relatively weaker division now meh who knows probably just a fantasy.
