Glavine might as well join the party for an incentive based, 1.5m contract. They could use him as their long-man out of the pen.

any chance the sox would try to pick up glavine for about 5 million?
if they did that, they could definitely afford to trade buchholz for a catcher (finally).
it would also give bard and bowden another year to get ready for the majors.
2010 rotation:
Beckett
Lester
Matsuzaka
Bowden
Bard
Wakefield?

Sox wouldnt want glavine, come on now.

Glavine can not pitch in the AL. Nevermind the AL East.

Sox dont want Glavine

xwoojinx, they're not going to give Bard another shot as a starter. In 07, after the first time he got hit hard he started to look like he was trying too hard and became a headcase. But as much success as he had in the minors as a reliever has me convinced he could easily stay that way in the majors. His control still needs work, but he could be a top notch set up man.

okay xwoojinx for one, Bard is a catcher that was on the Padres, and for two Bowden will not be in the ML as a starter this year or even next, they are taking there time with him.

"Bard is a catcher that was on the Padres"
He meant Daniel Bard. Red Sox prospect... and Josh Bard was signed by the Red Sox as well.

decca, nice one lol...great detective work
It'd be cool to bring Glavine in for a cheapy cheapy deal. Plays for his home team, gets to be with Smoltz :P
cheapy cheapy
but it would never work...just playing around with the idea.

LOL, Glavine to Boston. What would he be their 8th starter?
Does anyone know if Smoltz and Penny will each be used as starters? I figure someone will be sent to the pen, Smoltz would be a nasty set-up man come playoff time or even in the regular season if they want to keep his health at a minimal risk.

Is this like a new strategy from players to get a contract?
Let me know we will see players with resumes attending interviews with teams
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 11, 2009 at 09:38 PM
Bigpat,
Didn't you know Boston is going with the little used 12 man rotation this year?
And they may both be startes depending on what Wake does and they may save Smoltz till the middle/end of the year, if they make the playoffs he would be a great guy to have in the rotation. But Penny will be in there as long as he is good to go.

Add Glavine and the Red Sox become like a retirement home for aged stars.
I liked all of the Sox signings so far. They keep coming up with surprise after surprise. However, adding Glavine and his 85 mph fastball would be taking a step back.
Posted by: strikethree | January 11, 2009 at 09:43 PM
The Red Sox wouldn't add Tom Glavine. What Glavine was saying in the article was that as someone that grew up a Red Sox fan, he's envious of the opportunity Smoltz has to play for his (Glavine's) hometown team because he never got the opportunity to. It wasn't Glavine pitching the idea of himself to the Red Sox or the Red Sox having interest.

Would sure be nice if Boston could go with a 6 man rotation for 2009, kind of like in the good old days of BB when teams had a 4 man.
Logistics and pitchers being used to for so many years of the 4 days off would probably ruin the odds of it, though the Japanese teams use the 6 man rotation. It sure would lead to an awful lot of fresh arms late in the season when they are needed and lots of extra innings when needed for Lester and Beckett come September/October and Sox have the arms for it as of now.

I was thinking the same thing. It appears to be shaping up that way. Someone is going to the pen.
Papelbon, Saito & Smoltz? Man. That's crazy. Imagine if Okajima returns to form or Delcarmen lives up to his potential, this is getting scary.

As is stands right now, is Penny penciled in as 5th starter?
Posted by: Cyyoung | January 12, 2009 at 06:10 AM
class act, no room though.
hell of a hockey player too.
Posted by: Gosser128 | January 12, 2009 at 08:58 AM
The Smoltz contract contained language that indicated he would be a starting pitcher.
Posted by: PhillySox | January 12, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Glavine has had chances to come to Boston in the past. A modest hometown discount would have gotten the job done. Now he's too far over the hill.
