Why would he sign there? except maybe $$$$$

he lives in miami

That would be a great move for the Marlins. Pedro would fit right in in that clubhouse and provide veteran leadership for a young team, especially the talented young pitchers the marlins have. The Mets don't seem to want him back and the Marlins are always a threat to contend. I would like this to happen

Whoa. Just the fact that the Marlins are interested makes me think Pedro has something left in the tank. They have a knack for finding and resurrecting people. I'd love to see this work out.

This is good for both parties. The Marlins need a solid vet to look over the youngsters and Pedro needs a team. And it doesnt hurt that Pedro lives in Miami.

very smart move if the marlins pull it off. simply for the leadership he could provide for the kids.

$6M base salary, incentives to $12M.

Thoughts?

Wow, this is interesting. Just "early" talks I guess. It's true, Marlins could use a veteran presence like Pedro. I believe he's probably got something left in the tank. He spent much of the last 2 or 3 years on the DL, so he must be ready to go right?

cary:

You realize this thread has nothing to do with the Yankees or the Red Sox what-so-ever
Just letting you know...

Cary,
Please don't do that, it's just an invitation to a pissing match, even if you are trying to be objective.

Question:
Seeing as people want to go on random tangents, I might as well join in

What if the Tigers take a look at Pedro, then move a starter (Jackson, Robertson? Bonderman, even?) to the closer role (because aparently DD has no desire to get one)?
Or could they go after Ben Sheets?
Tigers have done some weird things
And free agents are coming way down in price
So,
Hey Anything Goes!

Cary:
Don't fret it

No hard feelings :)

(advantage Rays!! by the way- Yankees haven't proved a thing on the field, Red Sox and Yankees have to beat the Champs to become the Champs!)

yes, i take pedro over anibal.
the marlins always pick up veterans and they turn it around and become out of there price range

why aare people trying to start rays-red soxs talk in a marlins rumor

Another team that I see as a player in teh Pedro sweeps is the Texas Rangers because they desperately need pitching and if they fail at getting Sheets or Pettitte they might go higher than anyone else. Pedro would be the 2 starter on that staff and get a chance to step up as a leader of the team. In addition, I can see the Tigers offering him the closers role. His injury risk could go down and I think that the Tigers have a chance to salvage their talent and put a decent team on the field in 09.

Lester is better than Wang.

Better raw stuff, lefthanded, younger, and had better peripheral statistics.

Seems like a perfect match to me.

"why aare people trying to start rays-red soxs talk in a marlins rumor"

1. You obviously know nothing about baseball because people are comparing the Yankees-Red Sox not Rays-Red Sox

3) It surprises me to see the Marlins interested in Pedro Martinez and personally I think he will sign there.

rolling night,
i honest dont care enough to check the teams that are being compare when it PEDRO-MARLINS rumor.
seriously, there a 250post rumors a little down the homepage, go there an talk about that sh*t.

This is a brutal signing if the marlins pull this one off. I would definitely prefer Martinez over Anibal(when healthy) and he can provided a veteran presence to the players.

Go Ravens!

Are you guys sour over Anibal Sanchez already?

How do you see the rotation filling out if Pedro is signed?

Nolasco
Pedro
Johnson
Voltad
Miller or Sanchez ???

yankfan,
so anibal forgot how to pitch, he had a great rookie, yearbut was never able to build off it. he had TJ so you hope he can improve, he really suck last year. i know the yanks' fan love him though.
pedro would nt be a 2nd start, i see a rotation of:
nolasco
johnson
pedro
volstad
miller

volstad and pedro are interchangeable at 3rd, so i giving it to the veteran over the rookie.
miller over sanchez, cause when he on he light-out and when sanchez is now, he gives up 2runs

this is why people have a general dislike of yankees and red sox fans. there are some idiots who just want to talk about there team but by god they havent done anything worthy of a rumor for a couple hours so lets go on the marlins topic. there are some very great fans from both teams but the guy that made that comment gives you guys your bad name.

as for pedro to the marlins if its 1 year at a low salary its worth the risk but he just doesn't seem the same. lost his velocity somewhat and now more hittable. still decent but will not go out and be great anymore. maybe it gets a few more fans to the games though, everyone knows they need it

The inability to stay on topic here is beyond my comprehension. Why can't the meaningless debate comparing the Red Sox and Yankee rosters take place in a story about it?! Really, it's not that hard to read that this thread is about the Marlins.

Okay, back to the subject at hand. The Marlins signing Pedro Martinez sounds like a positive outcome for all parties involved. Pedro gets to pitch close to home and try to rebuild his value (prove he can still pitch). The Marlins get a future hall of famer who will put butts-in-seats on his starts and would be able to mentor the younger pitchers. There is no disputing that Pedro Martinez does not have the same stuff he had 5-10 years ago but that doesn't mean he's worthless. If Pedro is willing to take the paycut, this seems like the ideal fit.

Considering that the Marlins knocked the Mets out of the playoffs two years in a row, I think I would throw up seeing Pedro sign in Florida and succeed within our division.

I sit among the minority of Mets fans on here that considers Pedro Martinez to still have something left in the tank as expressed several times before, and it would be adding insult to injury seeing him succeed with the Marlins.

God, I hate Tim Redding already.

Pedro is a classic example of a low-risk, high-reward guy. I just wonder if it is in the Marlin's best interest that they pursue him. Aging, over-expensive players are not the Marlin way.

I hope this happens. I'd love to see the Mets be the ones to get 12 hits off of Pedro thru the first 4 innings.

"Associates say Pedro Martinez, who has family here, would love to pitch for the Marlins, but the interest doesn't appear mutual."

YOu think the Marlins are trying to make a run at the division in 09?

yanksfan,
they will be serious contender.
they have a great rotation, nolasco, and johnson have ace stuff. vol"stud", miller can be great contributor.
the bullpen is improving with young talent
and the lineup is the loaded with guys people dont know

"P Wang or Lester... slight advantage Wang"

No.

Yanks vs. Sox=ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. I couldn't think of a anything in baseball that is more dull than this. Maybe their fans that won't shut up about it, and think baseball revolves around them. This is a good move for the Marlins if it's an incentive based contract.

I could not possibly agree any more. Where have you been the last 2 or 3 weeks when I have been the only one on the Pedro band wagon and taking a beating for it. I could have used some backup ;). There is no reason that Pedro shouldn't be the Mets opening day 5th starter this year.

Pedroi is done, did anyone even watch him pitch last year? You cant even lean on him to be your 5th starter, he'll get hurt while stretching

"Pedroi is done, did anyone even watch him pitch last year? You cant even lean on him to be your 5th starter, he'll get hurt while stretching"

Seriously Zach, you're not the brightest. Pedro pitched 100 innings last year after coming back from injury. Obviously he's not going to be the same pitcher he was in Boston, or even in '05 and possibly not '06. But there's always the chance that Pedro could throw 150 innings of 85 ERA+ ball and spend the season teaching the youngsters how to pitch. Not great, but not horrible from a 5th starter/2nd pitching coach. Of course, this is assuming the salary is under $5M. Anything more and he's not worth it to the Marlins.

I'm not the brightest? hmmm,
"Pedro pitched 100 innings last year after coming back from injury."

he was healthy prior to spring training, he didnt get hurt until the season started. he wasnt on the dl due to his calf/shoulder, he pitched once in april, then out until june. he threw 3 quality starts al year.

"always the chance that Pedro could throw 150 innings "

he hasnt throw 150+ innings since 2005? and you're questioning how bright i am?

"But there's always the chance that Pedro could throw 150 innings of 85 ERA+ ball and spend the season teaching the youngsters how to pitch."

He'll never come close to 150 innings again. An 85 ERA+ is REALLY bad. He gave up 127 hits last year in only 109 IP. That number would only go up with the Marlins who have a bad defense.

"he hasnt throw 150+ innings since 2005? and you're questioning how bright i am?"

2006: 133 innings.
2008: 109 innings.

"always the chance that Pedro COULD throw 150 innings."

Yeah, you're right. A pitcher who had a leg injury last season CAN'T throw 150 innings next season.

"Yeah, you're right. A pitcher who had a leg injury last season CAN'T throw 150 innings next season."

"cant" and "dont expect him to" are two different things. if you EXPECT pedro to throw 150-170innings next year then you're nuts

because Pedro COULD throw 200innings, Pedro COULD strike out 200 guys, Pedro COULD win 20 games.

""he hasnt throw 150+ innings since 2005? and you're questioning how bright i am?"

2006: 133 innings.
2008: 109 innings."

were you backing me up or going against me?

Pedro a closer??? So he can pitch every other day with a fishing line holding his arm together? Don't know about that one...
