if you are the yankees , not matter what do you give up chien ming wang he's pretty young and has 2 19 game winning seasons .. i think he is still injured and his mechiancs needs worked on but dont give up he is a top of the line in #2 pitchers when healty

Brett Myers might be down for the season. Moyer's era is to big. Cole isn't the same as last year yet...Happ is a good addition but still a bit unproven on a long stretch and playoffs....So take ur pick

oh and Blanton will never be more then Mediocre, at best. he is just a warm Body that gives you alot of innings. They need an Ace Cole would be a number two on most good teams maybe even a number 3.
Posted by: Bravesfan13 | June 28, 2009 at 02:30 PM
Since when is Cole Hamels not an ace? Sure, he struggled coming back from injuries early this season, but he's certainly not a number two starter.
Posted by: Seth Kuhns | June 28, 2009 at 02:36 PM
i say the should go after the reds bronson arroyo , the reds should deal him with volquez coming back i say walt jocketty needs to pick up the phone and tell them bronson for jason mcdonald there were offering him in the penny trade but bronson if better value will compensiate picks after this years and always gives you 180 inning what you think?

"Since when is Cole Hamels not an ace?"
Since he's not pitching like one. Yeah he's gotten better since April but still he's not carrying the staff like what you'd expect from an ace from a contender.

Give Wang a few more starts so he can prove he is worth a Dom Brown package

Pretty easy to see why they are looking for SP.
Myers is out for the season.
Hamels is 4-4 w/ a 4.44 ERA vs a stellar season of 14-10 w/ a 3.09 era
Moyer is struggling at 5-6 w/ a 5.97 ERA after going 16-7 w/ a 3.71 ERA last year.
Blanton has a 5.06 ERA as opposed to his 4.20 ERA last year in 13 starts.
So 1 major SP is out for the season and every single SP left has an ERA at least 1 run higher than last year.

No way are the Yanks goign to trade Wang this year. If he's traded then that means he reverts back to his April form. If that happens then he's of no use to Phillies and the Yanks would be selling super low on him. Thinking down the road to next year the Yanks will probably let Pettite walk and would have a 1-4 of CC, AJ, Joba and Hughes. As much as I like JOba and Hughes they are still very inexperienced. We would have a glaring need to find another front/middle rotaion guy and there just aren't a lot of those guys available this winter and who really wants to drop another 80-100 mil on another pitcher. Even if Wang never gets back to 2008 form this year, we would still be better served trying to hide him and look towards preparing him for a 2010 return.

Right Yankeesfan...Thats what I said without the stats...I rest my case. If you wanna know who is an ace take the best from Guys like Maddux in his prime or smoltz clemens Glavin, and even today like Bilingsly and Halliday and CC when they are all pitching the best they can and compare it to cole's best. Thats when you know he isn't an ace. When he is pitching his best its more comparable to Lowe or burnett even JJ fore the Braves. Thats a number two starter and when he is doing what he is doing now. He is more like a number three starter. Easy...

1--"oh and Blanton will never be more then Mediocre, at best. he is just a warm Body that gives you alot of innings."
huh?
Blanton has been struggling, but if he gets back to form, as in any year but this one, he's still a solid #3.
2--Amaro needs to call up Carrasco, like now. See what your internal guys can do before making trades.
And, I'll admit that Penny's been decent, but something tells me he's going to be WAY overvalued if he's traded. The hype on that guy is crazy.

Cole Hamels at his best is definitely, undeniably, an ace.
It's just that this year, he isn't pitching like an ace.
Posted by: melonis rex | June 28, 2009 at 03:08 PM
Hey, hey hold your horses their Bravesfan. I never said Hamels isn't a #1 caliber talent. I simply said that there are odvious reasons why the Phillies are looking to add pitching. Hamels, when healthy is absolutely a ace, stud type pitcher. Lefties w/ his stuff are hard to come by. He threw 77 more innings in 2008, a total of 262 IP, than he did ever before in his career (189 was his previous high in 2007). He was obviously overworked. They won't be able to get a #1 type this season but they could defintely use a Sabathia type work hourse to take some of the burden off the young lefty Hamels.

melonis....are you a Pirates fan?? maybe someone with a career 4.39 era and record of 53-49 is #3 for the Pirates but should never be for the NL east. Except for the Nats...He was Bad to mediocre for the A's and won a little bit for the Phils last year becuase they hit alot. Small stadiums and big bats tend to raise a Mediocre pitchers stats. maybe a solid 4-5 and in a better market might not even be a starter.

I agree. I've been a big supporter of Penny this year and have argued that Boston would be stupid to trade him just because of Smoltz. However, Penny is no more than a good #5 on a great team and maybe a number 3-4 on a mediocre team. You don't trade good prospects for 3 months of service from a back of the rotation starter.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | June 28, 2009 at 03:14 PM
Hamels right now is healthy?? Don't fall into the Lefty with stuff debate becuase Jon Rocker was a lefty with stuff..haha. No good tho. Hamels had a good year last year. and Im not taking away the fact that he is good. But if your comparing him as a lefty to other Great Lefty aces then you don't have an argument. Even Moyer had a few good season end yet 25 years in the major prolly won't get him to 300 wins or even a shot to the hall of fame. oh and an ace shoul be able to take on those burdens.

Carrasco is getting the start on Thursday. Time to to what the kid can do in the bigs.

haha, as a mets fans thats good to hear that they are all over Brad Penny. Hes going to get lit up at CBP.

At least you had it at one point, which is a lot more than I can say for Bravesfan.
Posted by: Jason F | June 28, 2009 at 03:56 PM
I'm not sure what I could even say to you Bravesfan? Hamles was hurt in the off-season if I'm not mistaken and struggled in April. Since then he has gotten progressively better: April (7.27 era), May (4.06 era) and June (3.31 era).
If you feel he isn't an ace caliber pitcher then that's certainly your prerogative but numbers are numbers.
-career win % of 60%
-career era of 3.56 in one the worst parks for pitchers.
-594 ko in 624 IP; almost 1 ko per inning.
-8ko/9 IP vs 2bb/9 IP
-lifetime whip of 1.17, bat avg against of .243 and obp against of .336.
-Battle tested w/ a 4-1 record, 2.16 era in the post-season and a WS title to boot.
Oh yeah....and he's only freakin' 25 yrs old!!
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | June 28, 2009 at 03:59 PM
bravesfan13,
oh boy am i sorry i wasn't around today. hamels not an ace?
You do realize that at age 24 he won the LCS MVP and WS MVP with a 4-0 record and 1.80 ERA don't you? If not for Ryan Madson giving up a HR in the clinching WS game he would have been I believe one of two or three pitchers to win 5 games in a single year's playoffs.
I'll take that #2 on my team anytime.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | June 28, 2009 at 06:56 PM
oh and he only had recently a complete game shutout of the team with the best record in the majors, the Dodgers. Sometimes people need to think before they post.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | June 28, 2009 at 06:58 PM
of course a braves fan would say is a #2 or a #3 on most teams if it wasnt for the rain out in the world series he would have been the first pitcher to win 5 playoff games and by the way whats the braves record?
Posted by: philliesphan90 | June 29, 2009 at 11:55 AM
3 games behind urs after tonight there philliesphan and the way ur playing will be 2 after tomorrow! Now im not gonna as far as to say Hamels is a #2 yet but i mean can u really argue that he's not living up ace/WS mvp status this year? he's now 4-5 with an ERA close to 5, not exactly what you want out of an ace!
Posted by: T_Rav | July 01, 2009 at 08:37 PM
Yankees should get rid of wang. He will never be the same pitcher like early season 2008 after injury. Trade him now when he pitch a little bit better and still have some value. He is not good in postseason anyway even if he is back like old wang. His stinker is not stable n reliable. Hughes will do better job in regular season and postseason like a true Ace.
