« Discussion: Billy Wagner | Main | Odds & Ends: Pavano, Draft, Dodgertown »
With the promotion of 23-year-old outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from Triple-A, Ryan Spilborghs now stands as the fifth outfielder in Colorado. He's not an All-Star, and probably never will be, but Spilborghs deserves a bit more playing time than he'll get with the Rockies. Thus, he's on the proverbial trading block.
As Troy Renck of the Denver Post reported Friday evening, "The Red Sox have interest in Spilborghs, and Tampa and Atlanta are looking for outfield help. The Cubs have always liked Spilborghs as well."

I prefer Derosa, but Spilborghs can't be worse than Francoeur.

Seriously though, what about the White Sox?
Theyre using DeWayne Wise as an every day player when he should be at most a bench player at the AAA level.
I see Spilborghs fitting in nicely in Chicago.

WHITE SOX.
It makes way, way, too much sense. He gets a starting job there, in CF. He's an automatic improvement over the crap that's been trotted out in CF this season.
Rays and Red Sox don't make sense. Cubs already have reserves in the form of Hoffpauir and Reed Johnson. They need infield help. Braves need another OF, but I'd think if they were planning to trade for another, it would be someone who could bat middle-of-order, as opposed to Spilly.

Can't agree more with the White Sox fit. Seems right. Perhaps Kenny Williams is seeking more of a game changer, though.

What do you think it would take for the White Sox to get him. I would assume it would not be a whole lot since he is Colorado's 5th outfielder

The problem is he's so cheap (earning around $400K this season). So the Rockies have no real impetus to move him, and might demand a lot.

Well the cubs though are looking for Offensive or at least that is what the beat reporters and blogs are reporting.
I would take a chance on Ryan if I were the cubs, because he has potential to hit at the most 25 HR a year, plus he is a bargain at $415,000

I think the Rockies will ask for a top-tier prospect or 2-3 mid-tier prospect for Spilborghs.

Cubs Give
David Patton
Andres Blanco
PTBNL
for
Spilborghs

Wouldn't they prefer to solve the logjam by moving Hawpe who makes more than 10 times what Spilborghs makes?

I would like to see Spilborghs in RF though this will depend on getting rid of Frenchy first with possible eating some of his salary. Though I still think he would be a good fit as end a low cost options because I just don't think the braves will get a power RF bat at this point with out increasing payroll quit a bit. So if the there is no more $$ left in the budget than if they are going to want an upgrade over Frenchy than they will have to pay in terms of prospects/talent from the from in which they actually still can do.
1. Willingham
2. Luke
3. Spilborghs
This would be my order for the RFer that could offer some more power out of RF than Frenchy is giving so for. The Key is if we can do a salary dumb type trade with frenchy to free up $$ to get someone else via trade in RF that is more suitable in production and fit with in the prorated amount of frenchy's salary 3.375M for the rest of the season.
Alot to ask but if any team can figure this out to get a player that they want to fit with in the budget to be creative to make it happen the braves could get it done to get a head start and put pressure on the Met/Phillies to make despert moves as we move closer to the AS break/Trading Dealine.

"I think the Rockies will ask for a top-tier prospect or 2-3 mid-tier prospect for Spilborghs."
If the Rockies ask for more than 1 mid level prospect from anybody then they will be keeping him. He is a 30 year old 4-5 OF at best. If he was able to play CF on a consistent basis, could see the Chisox with interest, but he is basically a b/u corner OF.

Red Sox have Rocco and Kotsay. I dont see Spilborghs as a huge up grade. Rocco is sort of a local kid, and Kotsay can play a heck of a 1B. Red Sox need a defensive ss, and a power hitter, cause big Papi needs to go on DL to figure it out.I like Ryan on Braves, he is a up grade over Francoeur. The White Sox need a bigger name someone who can create excitement.Think Brandon Phillips

As far as the sox are concerned, when Carlos comes back, Pods will get moved to center and the outfield should be fine with Anderson as the backup. I would rather see Kenny try to make a play for Freddy Sanchez. In my opinion, Getz and Fields would both be expendable.

Counting Bailey, Carter, and Van Every the Red Sox already have five backup outfielders. They really don't need another.

If the Braves are going after someone they need someone that can lead off better than McLouth or someone who can Hit behind Chip and Mac or in between the two

The Cardinal's have a similar player that could be on the block. Skip Schumaker. He is currently the 2B but a much better out fielder. Probably an average glove but can play all 3 spots in the OF plus a poor 2B.
His OPS is similar too Spilborghs but has a higher batting avg and OBP but lower SLG. He also players in something closer's to a pitcher's park compared to Coor's.
He won't reach his first year of arbitration till next year also. So he is still cheap.
He would most likely be a piece to a bigger deal but curious to see what kind of value he has.
Posted by: FlimtotheFlam | June 06, 2009 at 04:00 PM
What makes you think Schumaker could be on the block? He seems to play a pretty crucial role in St. Louis. Leadoff hitter, second baseman, utility outfielder.

"Probably an average glove but can play all 3 spots in the OF plus a poor 2B."
If you call a 4.56 RF and a 5.541 ZR in 308 innings, a poor 2B. I'd hate you to say someone like Brian Roberts is a poor 2B, when he is not.
Posted by: BravesRed | June 06, 2009 at 04:32 PM
I have to agree that Schumaker might end up on the block. The 2B experiment needs to end, and that will deprive him of a starting position. I could see a team like the White Sox going for him to play CF.
If TLR does indeed get his "big bat" like it has been rumored (Holliday?) and that big bat is an OF (likely, unless its DeRosa), the person relegated to bench duty b/c of that move will probably be Schumaker.

drumzalicious,
Not really true. They just need someone who isn't a black hole of outs ala Jeff Francoeur.
Posted by: PWHjort | June 06, 2009 at 04:56 PM
Atlanta could try to get Willingham from the Nats. Maybe they don't want an arm and a leg for him and he can be counted on for good pop with his bat, as well as the ability to take a walk when he is given steady play. One of the Marlin fan all time favorite players and plays hard.

"Counting Bailey, Carter, and Van Every the Red Sox already have five backup outfielders. They really don't need another."
Actually, the fact that they have relied so much on Bailey and Van Every this year (especially Bailey) probably proves they do need another backup OF...

Don't trade Spilborghs....send him down and get him regular playing time if he has an option left, and call Murton back up. Spilborghs has some starting ability which he will lose if he's a 5th outfielder, and Murton doesn't have a potential starting future on this team anyways, meanwhile we might need Spilly to start in case of an injury.
I don't see the Rockies getting much for Spilly he's 29 and never started for a full year, we'd get a couple low-mid level prospects purely for his talents....
Posted by: bballrox4717 | June 06, 2009 at 11:56 PM
Is he a good fit for the Braves? Um have you looked at who the Braves have in the outfield other than McLouth? Definitely Spilborghs is a good fit if it doesn't take too much to get him.

Is there any sports writer in the country who thinks that the Red Sox are "not" interested in the players they cover for their hometown newspaper?
Posted by: hawkny | June 07, 2009 at 12:15 PM
What could the white sox trade to get Jason Hirsh, Alan Embree, and Spilly?
I think they all fit the sox team right now. Colon can be released, Jose to the rotation and Embree and Hirsh. We need a LRP and Gobble isn't a good LOOGY. Coop can help Embree get back on track and Hirsh can turn out to be a good MRP.
Posted by: soxfan4life | June 07, 2009 at 01:07 PM
Embree and Hirsh would be in the bullpen (obviously)
