« Odds & Ends: Lackey, Bay, Matsui, Wilson | Main | Mets Rumors: Lackey, Figgins, Delgado, Francoeur »
In today's blog post at ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes about Michael Bourn, and how he went from hitting .218 with a .273 OBP in the first half of 2008 to hitting .285 with a .354 OBP in 2009 thanks to a suggestion from Astros' coach Dave Clark.
Here's a roundup of Olney's rumors...

While adding Lackey would be great for the Mariners, I think they need to address their offense first. They had the lowest team era in the AL last year, and I do think that Lackey would make them a legit playoff contender. However: they don't have an established catcher (I don't feel comfortable putting all my faith in Johnson), they need to address the Branyan situation, if Beltre does in fact bolt the emerald city for the greener (literally, get it?) pastures of Philly then they'll need a third baseman. They probably need an upgrade over SAunders in left (ideally you would like a slugger) and can Griffey even DH every day?
The Mariners lack pop. but I do think that Lackey would be a good addition

Before they think about handing out money to Lackey, they need to know the price of resigning King Felix long term.

Jamey Carrol would be a very good addition to the Pirates.

Haha, should have read that the Dodgers are the ones interested. But my opinion still stands.

Lackey turned down 72m, damn you know his agent has some explaining to do if he doesnt get that on the open market.
Posted by: Deanezag | November 14, 2009 at 01:18 PM
Let it go Hicks, you cheap bastard. We hate you!

does 3yrs 50 mill for john lackey sound right?
3yrs 50mill for jason bay?
Posted by: beastOftheEast | November 14, 2009 at 01:33 PM
I am willing to bet that the $72m is still on the table from the Halos if Lackey wants it.

Right up to when free agency actually begins.

Was it 72M over 4yrs? Cause Seattle is not going to fork that over. So assuming its somewhere closer to 14-16m per season, adding Lackey actually helps the team solve its offense problem. The market for good offense is just as bare as it is for pitching. To significantly upgrade the offense, Seattle will need to make trades. The one thing everyone wants and Seattle has a lot of is SP. We have A LOT of SP. Not all high quality mind you, but a few decent ones as well as being able to trade RRS, Morrow, or Snell if Lackey comes on board. And Seattle has enough money to sign Lackey and still lock up Felix for even 20m if need be.

"does 3yrs 50 mill for john lackey sound right?

3yrs is a short contract for SP, Lackey is going to want 5, and some team is going offer atleast 4years
Boston offered Bay 4/60, so 3/50 isnt getting it done
Posted by: Deanezag | November 14, 2009 at 02:13 PM
I see Lackey getting 4 years 92 Million or somewhere in that range.

" see Lackey getting 4 years 92 Million or somewhere in that range."
Lackey's a 23m per year pitcher? Or is there a typo in your post?
Posted by: Deanezag | November 14, 2009 at 03:29 PM
Lackey is WAY over rated.. wait for Beckett, Lee, Webb, Vazquez at the trading deadline or in a year.. Carroll would have been a great everyday fit in Pitt, before Iwamura and with Vazquez making 2mil to stink there, don't look for the Pirates to pay Carroll after he made 2.5M last year. Dodgers could use Carroll more on an everyday basis with Dewitt also seeing some time there.. Carroll would be a steal at 2M a year for some team.

"Lackey is WAY over rated.."
NOT!
Don't lie, you'd love to have him in your rotation, lol.

cano for matt kemp isn't going to work that easily. Kennedy would fail in new york big time, pressure no chance.

You forgot a VERY important guy.. Name of Halladay that will be available after 2010 if he is not moved via trade before then. What a FA market next year if neither Lee, Beckett, nor Halladay is signed and 3 of the top 5 starters in the game were available?
Posted by: johns | November 14, 2009 at 05:08 PM
I'm glad that Olney is just spitballing, because although JZ has interest, there's no way he signs Lackey before locking up Felix.
Posted by: baseballismylyf4 | November 14, 2009 at 05:45 PM
jjyankeesfan2 Matt Kemp for Cano would never ever ever ever ever happen. Besides moving him to LF, when he is a better center fielder then Melky doesent make sense.
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 05:50 PM
By the way, Pleeeaaaasssse dodger dont sign Carrol. I would rather watch Dewitt all year.
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 06:29 PM
jjyankeefan moves make sense. But they sudn't sign sheets or harden. Get someone who can pitch the whole season and go 200 inning.
2010 yankees
Jeter-SS
Damon- LF (sign him bak to 1 or 2 yr deal)
Tex- 1B
Arod- 3B
Nady- RF
Posada- CF
Blalock- DH (25 homers last yr. in the stadium he can go 30)
Cano- 2B (just cant trade him)
Melky/Gardner- CF (let them battle)
C.C
A.J
Andy
Garland/Wolf/Washburn
Gaudin/Wang/Aceves
Mo
Joba
Hughes
Marte
Coke
Robertson
Gaudin/Wang/Aceves
Swisher
Cervelli
Hairston (re-sign him hes a good guy)
2010 piece of cake for the yanks
Posted by: mlbstud | November 14, 2009 at 06:30 PM
-Dodgers won't trade Kemp for Cano + B level prospects!
- Why would you trade for Kemp and then stick him in LF?
- Cano is not an excellent defender.
Posted by: YankeeFanatic | November 14, 2009 at 06:39 PM
The Dodgers are not going to trade their young telent away, for a guy like Cano who will be high priced. They have done it to many time's
Martinez, Konerko, Jackson
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 06:45 PM
Thank you YankeeFanatic. I knew some of you yank fans had some sense.
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 06:47 PM
Oh I hope that the Yanks sign Lackey, because he is just about to fall apart. It would be fun to watch him in pinstripes when it happens.
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 06:50 PM
Wow, what a miss by me.. Of Course.. Halladay, Backett, Webb, Lee, Vazquez.. ALL will be better than Lackey in 2010, 2011 and far beyond... Hey King.. on Carroll... Dewitt is a AAA player... Carroll had the 3rd best Fielding % of any 2nd baseman last year and a career .355OBP... When he played full-time in Colorado in 2006.. .300avg and 2 errors all year...
Posted by: gardner | November 14, 2009 at 07:27 PM
The 300 avg was because it was in colorado huge outfield, and it was 4 years ago.
Posted by: Kingsmen59 | November 14, 2009 at 07:35 PM
why would the Yankees or Dodgers want that trade?
Kemp is coming off a silver slugging, gold gloving year as a 24 year old costing the Dodgers $400,000 a year. He's one of the few power hitters on that team, and the best base stealer.
Cano is coming off a great year at 2B, but costing the Yankees $6 million. They don't need to save money, and the Dodgers don't need to add money. It just doesn't make sense.
also - Cano is great, but there's no way he puts up those numbers playing at Dodger Stadium when he's not batting behind Jeter/Damon/Tex/A-Rod/Matsui/Posada.
Posted by: ThinkBlue | November 14, 2009 at 07:51 PM
I think the Astros should try and trade for Josh Fields to platoon with Blum. He could occasionally spell Lee and Pence in the outfield.

Idiot.

Lackey is not over rated, he is the best available pitcher on the market now. I don't believe I heard he was the greatest of all time or anything close.
If Tom Hicks wants to save the team, he should partner up with Mark Cuban, its a match made in heaven, Cuban has money and will spend. He wants to own a team in the worst way, and this could prove good for both parties. I am not crazy about Cubans antic's, but there is no doubting his passion, and desire to win. The Rangers would become the Yankee's of the west.
Posted by: iceonfire | November 14, 2009 at 11:31 PM
In case there are no math majors out there: most logical division of 72million dollars is a 72/4yr deal averaging 18million per season. I know he's the best out there, but this time next year wouldn't you be wishing you could take his contract back?

Totally agree, this deal is going to reek of Carl Pavano. As for the Cano for Kemp thing, you'd have to throw in one a major prospect.
Posted by: twitter.com/bomberj11 | November 15, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Hicks get your twinkie eating fat ass out of my city. You will go down as the most hated owner in the history of DFW sports. What a legacy hicks.
Posted by: Rangerfan | November 15, 2009 at 11:08 AM
I honestly hope they go after Sheets or Harden on a 1 year deal. Lackey is overrated, and will be too expensive. If the Yankees can cut payroll by adding Sheets or Harden over adding Lackey, then why not? You know they're both injury risks, but so was Chien Ming Wang entering this past season.
I'd rather see one of Sheets or Harden than Lackey. I don't think his deal reeks of Pavano, or that he's going to fall apart, I just don't think he's worth 18 million a year, and I want a spot for Halladay/Hernandez when they become available. I'd rather sign Cliff Lee or Josh Beckett as well.

Cano, Hughes and something for Kemp. Cano's HR total gets cut in half leaving The New Coors Field in NY...
