Astros Sign Ramon Vazquez

By Tim Dierkes | June 29, 2010 at 8:54am CDT

The Astros signed infielder Ramon Vazquez to a minor league deal on Friday, the team confirmed to MLBTR.  Vazquez has already appeared in four games for the Triple A Round Rock Express, playing shortstop and second base.  The Astros' middle infield currently features Jeff Keppinger, Oswaldo Navarro, and Geoff Blum as they wait for Tommy Manzella's broken finger to heal.

The Pirates released Vazquez on April 8th, assuming his $2MM salary in the process.  He was signed to a minor league deal by the Mariners eleven days later.  Vazquez's '09 offensive struggles carried over to his Tacoma stint, and Matt Eddy of Baseball America reported his recent release.

I think the Astros some good moves just not enough good moves that will translate into wins. Trade Oswalt, Lee, and Berkman. Bring in some prospects and start trying to rebuild. The Astros could use help in almost every position. Get some good quality young arms, good SS and 2B, and while the results won’t happen immediately, at least next season will look better.

Ive heard:Lance Berkman and Chia Jen-Lo plus Brian Bogusevic and PTBNL to the Angels for Brandon Wood Mike Nopoli and Mike TroutorLance Berkman Chia Jen-Lo and PTBNL to the Yankees for Jesus Montero and Manny Beunoles. That adding that the Astros Pay the Rest of Berkmans 2010 contract and half of his 2011 contract.Ive also heardBrett Myers Koby Clemens to the Rangers for Jarrod Saltalamacchia Jouquin Arias and Chris DavisThen there is the Roy Oswalt Jeff Keppinger to the Phillies for Dominic Brown Austin Hyatt Jarrod Cosart Matt Way and Trevor May. With the Astros Paying 16 million of Oswalts Remaining Contract. Then there wasMatt Lindstrom and Brandon Lyon for Mike Minor Brent Clevlen and Chris Masters. So there are many many Rumors out there lets see what the AStros can do.

Clemens could definitely be trade bait, as the Astros seem to have written him off in the organization and can’t even really find a position for him. I just don’t see Lo being involved in any deal unless it were to dramatically improve the team in other areas, though. For a team in desperate need of pitching depth, Jordan Lyles, Ross Seaton, Lo, and Brad Dydalewicz should really be considered untouchable – even with Seaton and Dydalewicz struggling this season.
