Blue Jays Sign Nick Green

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 18, 2010 at 2:26pm CDT

The Blue Jays signed Nick Green to a major league contract and optioned Mike McCoy to Triple A, according to the team. Green, 31, became a free agent this month after opting out of his deal with the Dodgers.

Green appeared in five big league games this year before the Dodgers designated him for assignment. He picked up one hit in eight at bats and reached base a second time when Dontrelle Willis plunked him. The utilityman spent most of the season at Triple A Albuquerque, where he batted .204/.235/.398 and played shortstop, second, third and (for one game) center field.

Not only can Green play around the infield and outfield, he pitched for the Red Sox last year. The White Sox couldn't get a hit or run off of Green, who threw an 88 mph fastball, in two innings. Green has also played for the Braves, Devil Rays, Yankees and Mariners in his six-year MLB career.

This move by AA will push the Jays to the playoffs, never understand why they always sign these scrubs.

And now we know why Dopriak was bumped from the 40 man roster.

I’d rather we freed up the spot for Green by designating someone who isn’t useful like Overbay and then have us call up Dopirak to take over at first for the remainder of the season. It’s not like Dopirak would have been a huge downgrade, but rather potentially a huge upgrade and trade chip. Oh well, this is the second guy this year, who was better then Overbay whom we have had to get rid of just so we can keep Lyle.

ya Overbay’s been just brutal lately, hitting just .301/.370/.494 in the past month, what a scrub

and don’t even get me started on overbay’s ability to prevent 8 Edwin Encarnacion errors per game.

its not like he is going to start, his D is pretty good and he wasent that bad for the bosox down the stretch last season, he is a bench guy i hate when people freak out about a bench guy

decent 5-6 player utility guy, sure not the worst in the game. Not going to hurt you with his glove, or bat playing once a week or so at SS, 2B, or corner OF.

Yeah, I’m not really getting the point of this move. I see a defensive player who can play just about anywhere, slightly more versatile than McCoy. I can also see this leading to bumping Wise off the roster and adding someone else as there is still an empty spot on the 40 man. Magnussen perhaps?

Cito doesn’t pinch hit. But he loves defensive replacements. He already hurt Reed and Ruiz’s stroke by rotting them on the bench. Now our bench consists of solid, defensive players that will only help our starting staff. Playoffs!!!!1

It just gives Cito someone new to sit at the end of the bench…

I’m gonna miss seeing McCoy’s sneer.. But it’s Not a horrible move, adding a versatile, solid defensive player for a bit off extra depth..

I think it was just a move to have someone who can play many positions should the jays move a player for prospects at the deadline.

AA has also mentioned surrounding the young team around vet players who are good defensively. Johnny Mac, John Buck and now Nick Green.

    Just a thought.

John Buck isn’t great defensively. He calls great games though. You forgot about Dewayne Wise though, and Jose Molina as backup catcher.
