Arbitration Eligibles: New York Mets

By Tim Dierkes | October 3, 2010 at 8:12pm CDT

The Mets are next in our arbitration eligibles series…

  • First time: Mike Pelfrey
  • Second time: Sean Green
  • Third time: John Maine, Angel Pagan, R.A. Dickey

Pelfrey will be tendered a contract after his strong 2010, unless the Boras client signs an extension.  He owns a 4.34 career ERA with 43 wins, which should be enough to get him more than $3MM.  Pagan and Dickey were a couple of bright spots in the Mets' season, and both will be back next year.  In Dickey's case, interest in a multiyear deal appears mutual.

Green missed most of the season with a torn rib cage muscle and a stress fracture in a rib, so he could be retained for a modest raise on top of this year's $975K salary.  Maine is operating from a $3.3MM base, and made only nine starts for the Mets before succumbing to a shoulder injury that eventually required surgery.  Even at no raise, he's a likely non-tender.  Maine would hit the free agent market before his 30th birthday.

Sean Green has been really, really good down the stretch this season. I say he gets kept but not John Maine. I say the Brewers sign John Maine to a 1 yr $2MM deal.

You’re kidding right? Green pitched less than 10 innings this year and was garbage like always.

Maine isn’t worth 2 million anymore.

9+ k/9 for Green and a 3.86 ERA with all of those runs coming in one outing. also .172 against RHB.

So if by garbage you mean good, then yes, garbage.

Green is absolutely terrible and any front office would know that an 3.86 ERA means nothing if a whip of 1.6 comes along with it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets non-tender him this off-season.

I hope that the rumors a year or so ago weren’t true that the Brewers were offering Corey Hart for John Maine. If so, I think I’m going to bash my head against a wall if you don’t mind.

there were rumors that the brewers were shopping corey last year. I dont think it would’ve been straight up hart for maine. there probably were other prospects involved. either way, corey hit 11 HR and .260 in a bandbox for RH hitters with some solid protection. Put him in Citifield hitting in front of Jason Bay and he repeats those numbers. I believe that the brewers wanted Maine b/c they knew he was best under Rick Peterson, still relatively young and cheap. At the time they didnt know if Corey was going to sign an extension or wait til he hit free-agency in 2011, so they put out some feelers. Francour at the end of 2009 appeared to have found his stroke, was cheaper, popular, good with the media, all the things that matter to the wilpons.
the rotation was a question mark going into 2010. their rotation was santana, pelfrey, ollie, maine, 5th starter up for grabs. next year it is looking like pelfrey, dickey, niese, gee, and mejia. It COULD look like Lee/Pelfrey/Dickey/Niese/Gee
then when Santana comes back in 2012, it would be Lee/Santana/Pelfrey/Niese/Gee
        with Mejia or Parnell closing.

just went to baseball-reference and saw that he only pitched 9 innings this year.
      what stretch was this ?
are u talking about Shawn Green…or Sean Green?
does it make a difference…neither one played for the mets this year..

I’m not much of a fan of Sean Green, and I think John Maine will probably be non tendered. If the Mets still want to rehabilitate him, or if they think they can, they can bring him back on a lesser deal. If he’s not interested in that, I let him move on.

Keep R A Dickey around; just don’t get to crazy on the $’s and years.

Why is there a Yankee fan on this forum? Get off, and go deal with your wonderful pitching rotation.

It’s sad that lost in the shuffle of so many consequential games today that most baseball fans missed seeing Jerry Manuel commit the baseball equivalent of hari kari (no relation to Harry Caray) by sending Oliver Perez into a Mets-Nats game in the top of 14th inning to essentially put a comatose ballgame out of its misery (though Manuel later tried to conceal the act by yanking Perez after the go-ahead run had scored). What a fitting way for the Manuel-Minaya Mets era to come to an end, and I say that as someone who is not a member of the Mets frustrated fanbase.

It’s a rather sad state when the Mets are pinning their hopes on RA Dickey.

Ugh don’t remind me about it seriously that was just horrible even seeing that….look Manuel’s a nice guy and all but he clearly doesn’t have all the know how of strategies nowadays to contend with other teams (just way to many small mistakes this year overall). Also whats funny is I don’t have the stat but the amount of 1 or 2 run loses for the Mets this year absolutely astounding there had to have been atleast 20 or 25 games where they’ve easily could have won the games but didn’t because no one could produce a damn run. As far as Omar Minaya goes I give him credit for being able to find young talent thru the draft and internationally but whether if was Jeff Wilpon or not he didn’t get the job done (especially in regards to trades or deadline deals he was horrible in that regard). RA Dickey was absolutely awesome this year and totally should get a good 2 year deal at $3 mil per he totally deserves it and is the total opposite of Oliver Perez you can’t even compare the two period.

I can’t wait until RA Dickey has a great 2011 season, better season then any other Yankee starter right now.

only met fans would compare giving RA Dickey a 2 year 4 million dollar contract with giving Ollie Perez a 3 year 36 million dollar contract. smh.

RA has 1 year of arbitration left….after that he can be a free-agent. so if u give him a 2 year contract with a 1 year team option, ur only committed to an extra year beyond next year.

I feel like im talking to emotional women when dealing with fellow met fans. its like the concept of logic completely evades them.

Well, I heard that Pedro Feliciano is out as a Met. Add Tatis, Escobar, Blanco and Dessens to the list too.
