Taylor
1. bigger contract
2. better stats
3.rangers proved to be a competitive force in the AL west and the reigning AL champs
4. a great latin group in texas (andrus, borbon, feliz, ogando)

I can’t believe that the Angels and A”s both lost our on Beltre by only a few million. I get not wanting a bidding war, but not upping the bidding by a measly 5 million over 5 years?

Well you have to ask the question, how would they know it’s a measly few million? Team A and Team B are offering a player a contract with different years and money. I seriously doubt they’re going to be honest with each other about exactly how much they’re offering that player. And you can’t exactly trust the player’s agent when he says “ok, match Team B’s offer of only $5M more and we’ll consider it.” The entire bidding process comes down to strategy and what you think the player will ultimately bring back.

In Oakland’s case, it’s not just a few million. He would have made less money over more years in Oakland. 3.2 million difference, but also one year extra for Oakland. He has a chance to make that a 19.2 million dollar difference with the same amount of years as the Oakland contract. Plus whatever miniscule (or not) amount that the difference between and state tax and no state tax (could be wrong here, not sure if California has a state tax whenever I think about it).

Thats too much money for Beltre with Oakland’s salary in mind. I’m fine with Texas overpaying him, and the A’s saving their money.

I’m gonna laugh when the A’s end up on top of Texas in 2011. You can also bet that I’ll be there to boo him in Oakland. I hope everyone does too.
