Nationals Release Cla Meredith

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | March 11, 2011 at 12:46pm CDT

The Nationals announced that they have released Cla Meredith. The Nationals signed the 27-year-old right-hander to a minor league deal in February and he underwent Tommy John surgery last week.

Meredith posted a 5.40 ERA with 4.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 21 relief apppearances for Baltimore last year. He was a key member of the Padres' bullpen from 2006-09, when he posted a 3.26 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 237 1/3 total innings.

Meredith, a sixth round selection of Boston's in the 2004 draft, reached the majors the following season when he made a three-appearance cameo with the Red Sox. He has appeared in the big leagues every season since his 2005 debut, averaging 57 outings per year and a 3.43 ERA in that time.

I hope someone else gives him a chance when he recovers. STL or Houston maybe. Who knows. Hope he has the kind of success he did in SD some day.

He literally just had Tommy John surgery. I don’t think that anyone is going to give him another chance for 12-18 months.

in 2 years he may get a invite from some club to spring training with no contract offers other than a minor league 1 if he does make it on a team

I didn’t think a club could release you if you were on the DL or whatever…although, I guess it’s Spring Training, so they never OFFICIALLY had to put him on the DL. I hope the club still paid for the surgery or whatever…poor guy. Here’s hoping he recovers well and returns to his previous form with the Padres.

Man, that’s cold. I realize they don’t have to rehab him, but geez. Just throw him out with the trash.

Arredondo was released in the same way by the Angels. But I think they were mad at him about something else, it might of even had to do with how he got injured, or he didn’t share something with the club or he just pissed Mike Scioscia off. But something else happened.

The Reds have rehabbed him and we should see him sometime this season.

I’m sure he could afford the surgery if they didn’t offer.
