Twins Notes: Liriano, Sanchez, Span

By Mike Axisa | July 18, 2012 at 7:21pm CDT

The Twins have the worst record in the AL and lots of pieces to offer at the trade deadline. Here's the latest from Minnesota, courtesy of 1500ESPN.com's Phil Mackey…

  • The Angels and Blue Jays are among the teams who have shown legitimate interest in Francisco Liriano. The Red Sox had internal discussions about the left-hander as far back as Spring Training, but their current level of interest is unknown.
  • The Twins have no interest in taking on Jonathan Sanchez and his pro-rated $5.6MM salary, but he is a "possibility" if he clears waivers and becomes a free agent. The Royals designated Sanchez for assignment yesterday.
  • The Reds have been looking for a leadoff man and have been scouting Denard Span.

Really hope the Reds Span and another bat that can come through with RISP while Votto’s out.

Span to the Reds makes a lot of sense. Wonder what the price would be.

As a Twins fan, I’d hate to see Span go. At the same time I wouldn’t mind seeing Cingrani and Lozktar in Twins uni’s.

Lotzkar is a top 20 prospect they could probably get. I think Cingrani has been bumped to the untouchable list.

No way the Reds give up Cingrani. I could see them offering up Lotzkar and another mid-high level prospect, or possibly Heisey

Span would fit the bill as a lead off hitter. I’d think Lotzkar/LaMarre would be a good starting point for negotiations

Twins aren’t going to give Span aways he’s signed to a multi year team friendly contract. They’ed require MLB ready pitching for him.

Twins were asking for Storen in a deal with the Nats last year, Nats were instead offering Clippard don’t think Span’s value has changed significantly since last season.

And he is still a Twin because they aren’t going to get MLB ready pitching in a deal for Span. He is a good player, but he doesn’t rate that kind of compensation

I think the Reds need a clean up hitter more then a lead off hitter. Get a masher to hit between Votto and Bruce and move Phillips to lead off.

Well, considering Votto will be out for at least a month, I’d say you’re right

The difference is right now that there are no available cleanup hitters that would be a significant upgrade, in my opinion. I say go after Span first, then maybe Quentin or Willingham afterwards, but don’t give up much for either of them.

The Nationals keep getting linked to BJ Upton and Peter Bourjos when Denard Span makes a lot more sense.

Span would be an amazing pick up for Reds; Jays and Liriano sounds typical Alex Anthopoulos, get a “star” who’s down but not out, and try to get his top end while in Toronto, risky, but hell, is he worse that Cecil or Romero at this point? But twinkies will want goodies from Jays, me thinks at least two grade A prospects

You’re sniffing glue if you think Liriano will get moved for 2 grade A prospects. Just because he’s been on a hot streak of late, doesnt make teams forget the past couple years of horrible pitching…

Liriano will certainly not net two A prospects (no rental pitcher is worth that), but lets not pretend he has only been good during the past couple months. You said he has been horrible in the past couple years but in 2010 he had an ERA of 3.62 and his FIP that year was 2.66 which was top in the AL (xFIP was 2.95 second in the MLB to Halladay). I am not sure what his issues were last year and this April but he has performed as a top level starter recently enough to think that his current stretch is sustainable.

Rumor Had It That San Diego Was Scouting Kyle Lotzkar For A Potential Carlos Quentin Deal.. Span Or Pierre Would Be A Good Addition To Go Along With Quentin.

While I would love to have mauer that would be crazy. He is only in his second year of a 8/184. They paid him this extension after one year he topped 10 hr. The Yankees are not a dumping ground for bad contracts, they can make their own.

I dont know how you call the Mauer deal a bad contract. They paid him for average, not power. In his worst year (though he was hurt) he batted .287, well above average. And now he’s second in the AL and playing almost every day.

            Who provides better value?
Sabathia, Lee, Pujols, Fielder, Johan, Votto, Braun, kemp, mCab, or Mauer. They are paying him roughly the same as all those guys. Good player, but they are devoting 1/4 of their salary to 1 player, and they are last in the AL.
I don’t see how you could view it as a good contract. Production wise overpaid, he gets on base, but if there is no one to get him in then what is the point. He is paid like a middle of order slugger, but can’t hit them in, and his contract doesn’t afford them another slugger.

Travis Snider pulled from AAA Vegas tonight after hitting a HR. ANy idea? A trade/callup or injury. The altter seems unlikely as after his HR the team hit around so its unlikley that he hurt himself
