Phillies Interested In John Maine

By Zachary Links | January 12, 2011 at 2:16pm CDT

The Phillies have had discussions with John Maine's representation, agent Rex Gary confirmed to Andrew Marchand and Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.  The right-hander made just 24 starts in 2009 and 2010 and was non-tendered by the Mets this winter.

Philadelphia already has five starters with Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton.  Ideally though, the Phillies would like to move Blanton and the $17MM he is owed over the next two seasons.

Maine, who turns 30 in May, would likely have to accept a minor league deal.  The right-hander underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in July and his agent says that he has recovered very well.

Rays Sign Kyle Farnsworth

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 2:13pm CDT

The Rays have officially signed Kyle Farnsworth to a one-year deal, according a team press release.  The agreement was first reported by Steve Slowinski of DRaysBay and confirmed by ESPN.com's Buster Olney (Twitter links). The deal will pay the Barry Meister client $3.25MM in 2011 and could be worth $6MM over two years, since there's an option for 2012.

Farnsworth posted a 3.34 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 64 2/3 innings for the Royals and Braves last year. The 34-year-old's 41% ground ball rate is unremarkable, but it's higher than it was earlier in his career, when he was more of a fly ball pitcher. Farnsworth doesn't throw quite as hard as he once did, but his average fastball was still 94.9 mph last year. That was enough to place Farnsworth at the top of MLBTR's list of the hardest throwing free agent relievers.

The Rays have added bullpen candidates Adam Russell, Cesar Ramos, Joel Peralta, Chris Archer, Cory Wade, J.P. Howell and R.J. Swindle this offseason. That's a promising group of players, but Andrew Friedman's acquisitions are considerably less established than the collection of Rays relievers that hit free agency after the season.

As MLBTR's Free Agent Tracker shows, former Rays relievers Rafael Soriano, Grant Balfour and Chad Qualls are among the remaining unsigned arms.

It's been a publicly quiet offseason for Farnsworth since the Braves declined his $5.25MM option for 2011 at the beginning of November.

Cubs Avoid Arbitration With Koyie Hill

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 1:51pm CDT

The Cubs avoided arbitration with Koyie Hill, the team announced. MLB.com's Carrie Muskat first reported the agreement (on Twitter). The catcher earned $700K last year as a first-time arbitraiton eligible player and Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com reports (on Twitter) that his 2011 deal is for $850K.

Hill, 32 in March, hit .214/.254/.298 in 231 plate appearances as Geovany Soto's backup last year. He threw out 18% of would-be base stealers, down from his career average of 28%. Welington Castillo and recent pickup Max Ramirez could also compete for a 25-man roster spot this spring.

As MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows, the Cubs have four arbitration eligible players who aren't yet under contract for 2011: Soto, Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol and Tom Gorzelanny.

Extension Candidate: Albert Pujols

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 11:41am CDT

Baseball is a numbers game, whether you're talking about home runs, on-base percentage or xFIP. It's also a numbers game off the field when it comes to players' contracts. Some deals are entirely predictable. Shin-Soo Choo, for example, will likely earn $3-4MM through arbitration next year; Carl Pavano will probably sign for about $10MM per season; Russell Branyan's likely in line for another one-year deal.

But most of the comparable players for Albert Pujols are in Cooperstown, not in uniform. So determining a fair price for the 30-year-old will be a unique challenge for Cardinals GM John Mozeliak and agent Dan Lozano. Quite simply, there is not much precedent for Pujols.

Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard signed contracts that could come up in talks between Pujols' representatives and his team. Both Rodriguez and Howard are former MVPs who signed long-term deals that begin with their age-32 seasons. Pujols, who has three MVP trophies on his mantle, will be 32 in 2012, which would be the first season of a potential new deal.

Howard, a tremendous player who isn't on the same level as Pujols, received $125MM for his age 32-36 seasons. Rodriguez, an all-time great who was arguably the best player in the game when he signed his extension, will make an average of $27.5MM per season (plus bonuses) for his age 32-41 seasons.

Rodriguez and Howard aren't perfect matches for Pujols, but few other contemporary players even compare. Baseball-Reference lists Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez and Juan Gonzalez as similar batters to Pujols through age 30. Seven Hall of Famers including Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron and Mickey Mantle fill out the top ten list of his most statistically comparable players.

In other words, Pujols is in select company. Not only is the nine-time All-Star and two-time defending NL home run champion one of the best players of his generation, he's one of the best players of all time.

A similar argument led Rodriguez to the two biggest contracts in baseball history. But A-Rod hadn't won a World Series with the Yankees or endeared himself to their fans when he signed his most recent contract.

Pujols, on the other hand, defines the Cardinals much like Derek Jeter defines the Yankees. The Cards developed Pujols after drafting him in the 13th round of the 1999 draft (when Mozeliak was the team's scouting director). Five years later, the Cardinals were in the World Series and in 2006 the team won its first world title since 1982.

Pujols means more to the Cardinals now than A-Rod did to the Yankees in 2007, but Rodriguez does have one considerable advantage over the Cardinals' 6'3" slugger: he plays a more demanding defensive position. Not only that, the Yankees have the option of working Rodriguez's bat into the lineup as a DH at the end of his deal, but the Cardinals will have to play Pujols on the field for the life of his extension, even if his now-stellar glovework deteriorates.

As tempting as it is to compare Pujols to Rodriguez, Howard and various historical players, it doesn't make much sense to do so. The Cardinals don't have as much money as the Yankees and the sides could get creative with incentives and performance bonuses to ensure that the star first baseman stays put. Not much is certain about Pujols' demands or the Cardinals' willingness to spend, but we can say this: Pujols is on track to become an inner-circle Hall of Famer and it would not be unreasonable for him to ask for an Alex Rodriguez-like contract.

Mets To Sign Taylor Tankersley

By Zachary Links | January 12, 2011 at 11:40am CDT

The Mets have signed left-handed reliever Taylor Tankersley to a minor league deal, the team announced. Dave Gershman of the SPANdemonium blog first reported the agreement, which includes a Spring Training invitation, and MLBTR confirmed the deal.

The team's search for a lefty out of the bullpen began in earnest after losing Hisanori Takahashi and Pedro Feliciano in free agency.  At times the Mets have been linked to some of the stronger left-handed relievers on the market such as Brian Fuentes, but for the most part they have targeted more affordable options this winter.

Tankersley, 28, missed all of the 2009 major league season with an elbow injury.  After seeing limited action as a lefty specialist in 2010, he rejected a minor league assignment and was granted free agency in October.  In four seasons with the Marlins, Tankersley had a 4.58 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9.  The reliever is represented by Tom O'Connell.

Quick Hits: Balfour, Wells, Pirates, Penny

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 9:45am CDT

The Astros signed Wandy Rodriguez as an amateur free agent 12 years ago today. The lefty, who turns 32 next week, is an extension candidate this winter. Here are today's links…

  • Stop by at 2pm CDT for this week's chat.
  • In his latest blog post for ESPN, Buster Olney suggests that Grant Balfour could return to Tampa on a one-year deal if the Rays assure him that they won't offer arbitration again if he's a Type A free agent after 2011. Teams other than the Rays have to give up a top pick to sign the reliever this offseason and it isn't helping his market value.
  • Vernon Wells explains to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star that he's a different person and teammate than he was a few years ago, when he first signed his $126MM extension. He also admits that he may not be a $100MM player.  "Everybody would say I’m not worth the money and I would totally agree that I’m not worth that contract" Wells said.
  • The Pirates are still looking for pitching, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (on Twitter).
  • Some within the Cardinals organization liked the idea of bringing Brad Penny back to compete with Kyle Lohse for the final rotation spot, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (on Twitter). The Cards weren't willing to match the Tigers' $3MM guarantee, though.

Revisiting NL Free Agent Arbitration Decisions

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 8:45am CDT

On Monday, we examined this year's AL free agent arbitration decisions. Today, let's shift our focus to the Senior Circuit and revisit the 12 National Leaguers who declined their teams' offers of arbitration in November.

Players who decline arbitration forfeit the chance to settle on one-year deals with their former clubs through the arbitration process. Frank Francisco and Jason Frasor chose their teams' offers over free agency and will now work toward deals with the Rangers and Blue Jays, respectively.

Players who accept arbitration don't get guaranteed raises, but those who go through the arbitration process rarely take significant pay cuts. The chart below shows players' 2010 salaries and whether the player signed a new deal or remains on the open market.

NL Arb Decisions

The players above would generally have obtained far smaller guarantees by accepting arbitration, so it's understandable that the players and their agents turned down the teams' offers. Garland and Dotel might have obtained comparable money by accepting arbitration, but Garland wanted to return to the Dodgers and Dotel has a better chance of closing in Toronto than in Colorado.

If Heilman can find himself a raise this offseason, every National League player who declined arbitration will have found a comparable or superior deal on the open market*.

*Hoffman agreed to turn the Brewers' offer down; he did not have the choice of accepting.

Tigers To Sign Brad Penny

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 12, 2011 at 8:43am CDT

The Tigers have officially agreed to sign Brad Penny to a one-year, $3MM deal, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link). ESPN.com's Buster Olney, who first reported the agreement, says the deal includes up to $3MM in incentives for the Legacy Sports client (Twitter link).

Penny will compete with Armando Galarraga at the back of a Tigers rotation that's led by Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello and Phil Coke. After starting the 2010 season with nine strong starts, Penny missed four months with a right shoulder strain. The 32-year-old's season line includes a 3.23 ERA with 5.7 K/9, 1.5 BB/9 and a career high 52.8% ground ball rate.

Penny has spent nearly his entire career in the National League and his one stint in the American League went poorly. The Red Sox signed him before the 2009 season and he posted a 5.61 ERA in 131 2/3 innings for Boston. As MLBTR's Transaction Tracker shows, this isn't the first time Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has acquired Penny. He obtained him for the Marlins from the Diamondbacks in 1999.

Click here to read about the fallout from the deal.

Olney and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reported that Penny was nearing a deal with the Tigers after the right-hander hinted at one on his Twitter account.

Poll: Will Andruw Jones Sign With The Yankees?

By Zachary Links | January 11, 2011 at 9:31pm CDT

Yesterday we learned that the Yankees have strong interest in free agent outfielder Andruw Jones.  GM Brian Cashman is in search of a backup outfielder who hits right-handed and Jones is one of the better options available at this point in the offseason.

Jones' ability to hit left-handed pitching is well-known.  The five-time All-Star has a career .863 OPS against lefties and even topped that mark with a .931 posting in 2010.  And as Ben Shpigel of the New York Times points out, Jones' defense is still preferable to that of Marcus Thames, even if he has lost a step or three over the years.  The soon-to-be 34-year-old registered a 2.2 UZR/150 in the outfield last season which easily bested Thames' -33.0.

Thames and Johnny Damon are still available and still backup options for the Yanks, but they prefer Jones.  However, the two sides are still far apart on money and the veteran has other suitors, including the Rockies, according to Troy Renck of The Denver Post (via Twitter).  When all is said and done, do you envision Jones being in pinstripes in 2011?

For Now, Mets Won’t Cut Castillo

By Zachary Links | January 11, 2011 at 8:02pm CDT

While the Mets have internally discussed releasing second baseman Luis Castillo, they still plan to bring the veteran to camp, tweets Jon Heyman of SI.  However, the club is at the 40-man limit and as they continue to look into acquiring more pieces, such as a left-handed reliever, they could sever ties with the second baseman.

Castillo's lack of versatility makes it difficult for the Mets to keep him.  Mets GM Sandy Alderson has shopped Castillo around but after posting a .235/.337/.267 slash line in 2010, it's been difficult to find a taker.  Alderson recently conceded to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin that if he stays with the team, it'll have to be as the primary second baseman.

“If he’s going to be on the club, it probably will have to be as the regular second baseman, or somebody who plays quite a bit of the time at second base. He just doesn’t give us enough coverage other places to play a utility role…And I think that’s probably his best and maybe only role — regular duty at second base,” the GM explained.

The three-time All-Star is set to make $6MM in the final year of a four-year, $25MM deal.
