Quick Hits: Pujols, Lee, Davis, Buehrle

By Zachary Links | December 10, 2011 at 4:33pm CDT

On this day in 2008, the Rays traded Edwin Jackson to the Tigers for Matthew Joyce.  In his first full season for Tampa Bay in 2011, Joyce hit .277/.347/.478 with 19 homers and received his first All-Star nomination.    Here are some links for Saturday afternoon..

  • The personal services clause in Albert Pujols' contract ties him to the Angels for ten years beyond his playing contract, tweets Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.  In total, Pujols and the Angels are set to be in business together for 20 years.
  • The Angels were the only team to call the Cardinals about a possible trade for Pujols in recent years, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links).  The talks never advanced, however, as the Cards wouldn't consider trading him (via Twitter).
  • There's no evidence of any interest in Carlos Lee yet, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network.  Heyman suggests that the 35-year-old might need Prince Fielder to come off the board first before the Astros can trade him.  Last year, Lee hit .275/.342/.446 with 18 homers for the Astros.  The Indians have reportedly considered the veteran but are wary of his price tag.
  • The Athletics’ haul for right-hander Trevor Cahill should be a pretty good indication of what the Rays might expect for righty Wade Davis, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.  Clubs might not view Davis as highly, but his contract might make him even more appealing to teams such as the Reds and Marlins.
  • According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Nationals’ final offer to Mark Buehrle was $39MM over three years, writes Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.  Ultimately, the right-hander signed with the Marlins for $58MM over four years.  Ultimately, the Nats' offer was $19MM less in overall guaranteed money and $1.5MM less in average annual value.

Yeah I’m sure that. 300 obp at first would have really helped in the World Series run….

I’ll take a World Series and two compensation picks over a bad 1B and the top prospect.

Guess thats how we Angel fan’s feel right now we would take 1 or championships..For what we paid him..And we are expecting one..Maybe next year maybe not..We just need a RP and a 3B so this team can have a lot more chances

Not really. They could get a lot more for him than Trout & a guy who doesn’t even have a .300 OBP.

I’m more curious about when “in recent years” the Angels made the call. Last years trade deadline, last year, the year before? I’m kinda curious how long the Angels have had Pujols as part of their long term potential agenda. It might explain why they were never big players for Teixiera in his FA… though it still wouldn’t explain the Napoli for Wells deal.

Before their WS run, I thought the Cardinals should have TRIED to trade Albert to the Angels.  Right now they would probably yet have a pretty good 1B, and extra talent on the farm.  But, they would be without the latest ring.  I’ll let Redbird fans decide if it is worth it or not.

I don’t see how Davis and Cahill are equal but I like it if it’s true. A hitter equal to the talent level of Jarrod Parker? Yes, please.

davis is from good stock. he was a top 50 prospect for quite awhile, topping out at #17 in 2008. he’s underperformed so far in the bigs mostly because his off-speed stuff has been inconsistent. but his contract is fantastic and he still has potential

i agree his value doesn’t match cahill’s, but he’s not the scrub his stat page suggests

Interesting that this article mentions Edwin Jackson, because at this time 3 years ago he happens to be the best comp to Wade Davis! Compare Jackson’s 2008 season stat line to Davis’ 2011 season stat line. Almost identical. Both guys #5 starters in the deep Rays rotation. Both guys former top prospects. Both guys with a good fastball but need better command. Davis may be a year older than Jackson was after 2008 but has a better contract going forward.

Parker has #1 potential. Yonder Alonso doesn’t have MVP potential.

I really think Reds will get tired of waiting for pitching help to just appear and we can get Yonder for Davis.

Not happening, Wade Davis isn’t even that good. We have plenty of 4/5 starters, we don’t need another.

        He’s a 4/5 in the Ray’s Rotation, he’s a 3, with 2 potential in most other rotations.

And alonso is mostly a potential guy too. All he’s proven is he is a terrible LFer and a 1B only who doesn’t have great power.

Davis for Alonso is more than a fair deal. I’d be more hesitant if I was the Rays than Reds.

i wouldn’t settle for davis if i were the reds. their window is not going to be open long enough to take advantage of davis’ long-term contract. package alonso with someone else and aim higher imo

4/5 starters in Reds rotation cannot gain a rotation spot in most baseball teams.

Clubs might not view Davis as highly, but his contract might make him even more appealing to teams such as the Reds and Marlins. Wade Davis isn’t all that good, Cahill most certainly could be a Cy Young candidate. See this is another reason to trade Guthrie to the Reds. I keep on hearing how good Guthrie would be if he pitched on a good team. Well the Reds are a good team, so why not there. Look, he would probable love pitching for the Angels, but “The Inn” is full there. So my guess it’s either the Reds or the Orioles. The player that I would want is Volquez. I don’t ask for much do I? The only problem is, I am not sure Adair is the right guy for the pitching coach job in “Charm City” and I really feel that this will effect who we can recruit for the 2012 season. Showalter seems to think so(right guy), I however do not!

If memory serves me right, Guthrie is a fly ball pitcher. A fly ball pitcher at GABP just doesn’t work out (look at Aaron Harang at the end of his contract). I don’t mind trading Volquez, but I at least want somebody that doesn’t get paid a lot that can’t pitch effectively in the home ballpark. I’ll pass.

Are you sure? Could I throw in in Brad Bergesen to sweeten the deal?
Brad is a sinkerball pitcher that needs a change of scenery as well.

Davis has way more value than Cahill plus a better G.M. at Tampa Bay.  Billy Beane just does deals for the sake of doing deals rather than actually making his team better.

I too am a Rays fan and the Reds have a surplus of pitchers equal to or better than Davis. I’d love it if Davis got us any one of Alonso, Mesoraco, Grandal, or Billy Hamilton. If the Reds do that they need a new GM.

Rays can deal both Upton & Davis or Shields for Alonso & Grandal. Fair deal for both sides. Reds get a huge upgrade in CF, allowing Stubbs to move over to LF, plus a great #2-3 to slot in behind Cueto. Rays upgrade their offense while stilling maintaining a very deep rotation. Its as simple as that, Reds should ask for Upton & one of their many, many starters, & Tampa should ask for one of their many, many catchers plus a once highly touted 1B prospect. Like I said, its a win-win for both sides.

Honestly, I would say neither.  They were both pretty fair offers from my perspective; the Nationals may have been a little low, but not so low that I would call it low-balling.  I’d put Buerhle around $14MM personally, so the Marlin’s offer doesn’t bother me that much.  If it was an overpay it was more the years than the salary (particularly for a guy who has talked about retiring quite a bit lately).

I agree, too.  As a Sox fan, I felt the palehose were ready to match something in the 3yr/40MM range.  When the Marlins went 4 years, it was all over.  I personally think Buehrle has the mechanics to perform similarly to what he does currently for another 4 years.  But neither the Sox nor Nats were willing to take that chance.  And, after all, it is their money they are gamblling with.

Wade Davis has had potential as #2 when he was a prospect.  He has good plus fastball but just inconsistent with his secondary pitches.  It would be a sell-low on Davis given his super bargain contracts so I’d rather keep him.  It is just his 2nd full season in big league and I still did not give hope on him.

His ERA for teams below .500 is 3.48, which is okay but he was horrible facing top-tier offensive teams such as Yankees, Rangers.. His inter league ERA is 2.70 while pitching 6 games.  I would guess his ERA would be sub 4.00 with 180-200 innings if he escapes from AL East but I’m pessimistic clubs would look high on Davis due to his stats this year.
